    Please wear eye and skin protection when mixing and using that 50% NaOH solution! Also make sure you're using compatible containers (HDPE).

    Evan has a really good presentation style! A little different than Jake's, but still very informative and concise. Thanks for the information and all you guys do to further the hobby!

    After 1 and a half years of struggling with Aiptasia, I finally got rid of them. I feel like all the videos make it look so easy. I literally had to rip apart my entire tank and leave it almost empty, only with fish and coral still in there and still I had to manually remove and kill Aiptasia for months until finally they were all gone. Now I can finally slowly rebuild my reef. I'm going to be careful as ever when adding anything new to my tank.

    I would strongly recommend Berghia Nudibranchs. I ordered 10 on eBay and they started out slow, but began reproducing and ate ever aptasia in my 225 gallon system. They seemed to be nocturnal and I’d only see them late at night. They hid well during the day. I believe the Berghia Nudibranchs absorb some of the stinging cells so my reef fish didn’t eat them (results may vary on the fish eating them).
    Unfortunately/fortunately they strictly only eat aptasia. Once they have eaten every aptasia they will die unless you supplement them with more aptasia, which I don’t think you would want to do unless wanting to breed them, which could be a profitable side gig.
    I have tried the shrimp and fish mentioned but it’s only a temporary fix. I have not seen aptasia for nearly 6 months or a Berghia Nudibranch. Problem solved, until I add another coral…😂

    Would love to see a video of controlling/keeping vermatid populations down if they come into your tank. A had a horrible experience on a previous tank. Got everywhere, in all the equipment. Even after taken rock out and scrubbing it they came back- must have missed a few.

    Great video....tried them all multiple times over 25 years and File fish are kings over the long term especially with my mostly SPS tanks.

    In my 30 gal my problem just kept getting worse. I bought 4 berghias. Didn’t see them for months then I started seeing them in my refugium at night. Not one single aptasia left now

    Man!! That Colorado accent is wild. You both sound so much alike, it's uncanny. Also, have you considered getting your hands on an Australian stripey for aiptasia control? Good video. More Evan please.

    I keep a gang of Peps or Monaco shrimps in all of my tanks, for example 3 shrimps in a 200 litre tank & I almost never see Aips & I import a lot of corals. On the very rare occasion I do see 1 I just hit them manually with whatever chemical in a syringe kills them, sometimes it can take a couple of hits & I'm guessing the shrimps help out after the lights go out. This has worked great for me with no problems for nearly 10 years.

    If you are a little bit more adventurous you could try C. Kleinii who will eat Aptasia but are a bit more unsafe for corals. A friend who manages the aquatic section of our local Zoo swears by them but will always fish them out when the Aptasia is knocked down wven in their SPS tanks

    This video is perfect timing. I am battling aptasia right now. I have tried peppermint shrimp, Nudibranchs and also have a file fish. They are still growing like weeds. I have used Franks Aptasia and is does work, but the sometimes comeback as multiples. I am excited to try this one and done method. Thanks for the advice!

      I'm in the same boat. Just got my self a filefish. It disappeared after one day. Think it might have been consumed by my bristlworms. XD Going to try this method.

    If you start with small frags and cover everything that is not living coral tissue in superglue before adding it to your tank it’s makes it a lot harder to introduce a lot of the uglies.

    I got 1 small file fish. He ate all the aptaisia in my 75 gallon reef in 3 days. I had been given live rock from someone that was loaded. Haven't had any aptaisia since. I have clams so no copper band for me and the peppermint shrimp did nothing.

    Pro tip: inject Palythoa Grandis with aptasia x directly in the mouth. Fill it. They will dissolve after 2x. I resorted to this after finding 3 large polyps in my 30 gallon. Ran double carbon and did a water change next day

    On a new setup soon. If I QT my corals/frags etc for a few weeks and see no aptasia. I'm good to go?
    It has to get into the system somehow. So prevention has to be better than cure.

    How about Forcipiger longirostris, they are more reef safe than your “normies” longnose but at the same time hardier than Chelmon rostratus, I have one in my tank and it does wonders

  • @waterlover

    Just squeeze blue sponge into vinegar let the sponge soak for about a day then squeeze the sponge and wala ready for the cure to get rid of aptasia

    Thats the same sodium hydroxide i was dosing to my tank for ph and alk demand. 100% ultra pure sodium hydroxide does has a ph of 14 and yeah i had some leak in a container and it absolutely ruined my stand and carpet 😅

  • @lucamartino3007
    @lucamartino3007 2 роки тому

    Wow. Making a saturated sodium hydroxide solution with no eye protection or leg protection. People, at this concentration sodium hydroxide can cause permanent eye damage, severe tissue damage (like if it spilled on his leg while on the ladder), and if inhaled serious lung damage. My recommendation would be goggles, gloves, pants, and a remote place to store it away from your body. While used everyday in industrial applications PPE and precautions are needed.
    On a different note, Australian Stripies will mow down aiptasia faster than a copper band or file fish. They are hardy and when fed properly they do not eat corals. Add on top of that how awesome of a fish and you have a winner!

  • @Mike__B
    @Mike__B 2 роки тому +2

    So does sodium hydroxide actually kill them? Or is it something that just knocks them down to a "nub" and they will eventually regenerate so aiptasia "removal" just is part of the normal maintenance?
    See if it were me I would have sacrificed half that colony of zoas by whacking off a piece of that rock and just toss it in the garbage, I've played a long dance with aiptasia and I really didn't like doing it anymore, everything I tried didn't work, every brand name product was garbage, biological methods were hit and miss to the point where they were more missing than hitting. It really is soul crushing to watch a beautiful tank succumb to aiptasia.

No noticeable aptasia in the display and I am worried about killing this guy and having it release babies as it dies and totally dosing my tank. Was thinking about draining the water out of the overflow and using a paper towel and just wiping it all off the pipe. Any ideas guys? • @ReefBuildersVideo
      @ReefBuildersVideo  2 роки тому

      For sure, these look different from classic rock anemones but once in a while I'll see a tank or a store with infestations of these pests with blunt tips or bulbous tentacles - I believe these are different species but no idea on the generic level

    • @encrustingacro
      @encrustingacro 2 роки тому

      @@ReefBuildersVideo From what I have seen being identified in the wild, I think the ones with the bulbous tips are true aiptasias while the regular ones are actually exaiptasia.
