    You had some awesome finds out there today . The Kirk was wicked . We find the Mosasaur bones in some of our creeks too . It is actually a large reptile that lived in the shallow seas during the Cretaceous . I helped on a couple of digs here in Alabama years ago . One of them we dug out a Mosasaur that was around 90% complete .

    Wow! You don't know how lucky you are finding all of this great stuff while simply walking creeks! Wish things like this were possible where I live in Europe too...!
    By the way, and I think enough people probably told you this already, mosasaurs (and there were many different species) were marine reptiles related to snakes, particularly pythons. Much like them they had very elongate bodies, though they had four paddles by way of appendages. They also had a tail fluke and may have had a dorsal/back fin. Another feature they share with snakes is that they had palletal teeth in the back of their mouths. They were the apex/top predators of the oceans of their time and outcompeted other strains of marine reptile that had been around longer.
    Then, concerning the vertebrae: while the second is undeniably a mosasaur, I'm not too sure about the first one you found. Not only does it's preservation differ from the second specimen you found, but its circumference seems rather angular compared to what you might expect from a mosasaur vertebra. It also seems to project a lot further beyond the neural arch than you'd expect to see in a mosasaur, and the fact that it thins out towards the back would also be unusual. Now both crocodiles and horses have very similar looking vertebrae. And while I'm not particularly good in identifying either of them, I think there are enough clues to be a bit reserved in the identification of this particular vertebra as mosasaur. To me it looks like it could very well be an ancient horse vertebra.

    Please, look at your video at around 3:01 or so when you found the second vertibrae. on the gravel to the left of your vertibrae is what appears to be a nice 3+ inch side notch point!!!!!! you might go back and find it if you havent already found it! what do you think? please let me know if you find it....I'd like to see it!!

    • @Theditchwalker
      @Theditchwalker  9 років тому

      +crescenthillstudios I've watched it a couple times and paused it....It has rained several times since this hunt so it may not be there anymore....It really looks like a piece of clay to me......is what your seeing grey...?

    • @crescenthillstudios
      @crescenthillstudios 9 років тому +2

      yes, it looks like the point is down and the notches are at the top, but it is around 3:00 into that video and I was mainly looking at the shape. the detail wasn't such that I could see flaking. But I just wanted to be sure. I'd hate for you to be that close to a killer piece and just not see it because I was focused on the camera work. Just making sure. What state are you in? I'm in Owensboro, Ky.

      wish i could go to some nice creekwalk with you sometime. I've got a big collection from surface hunting and a little digging over 25 years ago. But i would like a creek veteran to show me the finer tenants of creek hunting. most all the creeks in 20- 30 miles of me are muddy bottomed. I've walked on the Ohio River banks locally with some sucess. Any chance you'd let me hunt with you sometime? I'm too far away to be any competition to your hunting opportunities.

    • @Theditchwalker

      Sure man.,sounds great..most of my higher grade finds come from smaller tributaries...but yeah.,we could set that up...Got a vid coming up tonight...found a large Benton made from buffalo river chert....I'm working on it...could be an hour or 2...😁

    At 3:26 is that another arrowhead? To the right of the round stone.

  • @fallsgrave
    @fallsgrave 9 років тому +1

    Awesome finds! Those bones are very interesting, likely remnants of large aquatic reptiles that lived just before the K-Pg extinction event 66 million years ago. We have had a few dinosaur bones found here in Missouri but the Permian-Cretaceous fossil record is very poor for most of the eastern states. I have gone to Montana a few times to excavate dinosaur bones in the Hell Creek formation, and let me tell you there is chunks of dinosaur bones everywhere.
    Do you have an idea what a piece of the Mosasaur vertebra like that would go for?

    That was a great group of finds! The KSB looks to be original state and never re-sharpened. I never understood the reason for snapping the bases off though. Doesn't seem practical for hafting. Was it religious or something like that? Best wishes and Merry Christmas, Dave.

    • @Theditchwalker
      @Theditchwalker  9 років тому +1

      +Daddydigger1 appreciate it Dave...Good question. It is believed that these KSB's were actually Kirk corner notched .,which with the deep notches.,were prone to snapping off in the handles. So many of them done this that collectors typed them as KSB's to better market them...Best of luck and Merry Christmas you you my friend

    • @Theditchwalker

    • @Theditchwalker

      A common myth about arrowheads is that they are all perceived to be arrow points...the bow and arrow did not evolve until the woodland period...these are much older and were used as knives.

    I have a hard time grasping the idea that Indians would lose these arrowheads up and down these creeks, the ones your finding were probably never lost but were thrown away or left but not lost. You feel that.

    • @Theditchwalker
      @Theditchwalker  6 років тому

      Your rite.....Most are washed from sites by erosion of the banks....Creeks have changed courses over time.,so some creeks that you find points in never were inhabited by the natives.,but their artifacts erode from the banks and are deposited into the creek bed.
