  • The Jolly Push Pull Fisherman (Hertfordshire Railtours); Saturday, January 8th 1994. In this video it is seen first at Waterloo and then at Skegness with some train interior shots at the end. The train was rather crowded as it had only one 4TC (four trailer car unit) set instead of two. It started out with two but someone had left the handbrake on on one of the units (410) which caused a wheelflat and so that one had to be emptied of passengers at Acton and removed at Cricklewood. I was in unit 417 which was the unit that was OK and I sat tight as all the people in the faulty unit piled in to fill up the empty seats in ours and those for whom there was no seat had to leave the train and apply for a refund. Two class 33/1 locomotives pulled the train - 33 109 "Captain Bill Smith RNR" and 33 116 "Hertfordshire Railtours" - and we kept both locos even when reduced to four carriages so there was no shortage of power. The train made it's outward journey by way of the Midland Main Line and Nottingham but returned to London Kings Cross by way of the Great Northern. This was the penultimate railtour to be run with 4TC stock in regular BR service (the last one was the Push Pull Farewell - Waterloo to Exeter, Bristol and Weymouth on January 22nd 1994 - I wasn't on that one - too late now!). There have been tours run with a preserved 4TC (in London Transport livery) in recent years - I rode from London Waterloo to Swanage and back pulled by Lt Jenny Lewis RN in 2019.
