Definitely an acquired taste. I like listening to people that make you kinds adventure through their catalog for something that opens the door. Like, another guy that requires digging to get into, Danny Brown. Is Grown Up and 30 made me take that guy more serious.
@@DirtCheapFU I've been strictly into rap like DOOM, Eyedea, Aesop Rock and shit for ages but I finally branched out and got into EDM. Definitely an acquired taste as well but those festivals are so fun when you find what hits your ears right

MF DOOM has the ability to rhyme a whole full sentence with another full sentence. No filler. Every word is important. His delivery is special and is put together so effortlessly, it may go over heads on the first listen.
Not sure I would agree that every single word is important, sometimes some words just rhyme well together with something or fit the beat well, his voice and words are almost like another instrument complimenting the beat. Obviously his lyrics are extremely deep and there's so much to decipher that you won't even catch if you listen to it 100 times, but sometimes it feels like he just want to 'flex' with how many different words he can use in a multi syllable rhyme scheme

MF DOOM is probably the greatest rapper ever technically. Not only his level of rhyming ability which is probably unmatched. All of the technicalities of his rhyming is too king to mention, but it’s also the deep meaning and metaphors and references behind some of his bars, people are only getting some of the shit he was ACTUALLY saying contained with in the entanglement of his genius rhyming.

No, his delivery I feel is amazing. Great voice, great enunciation and his ability to twist the words to fit them to rhyme is genius. I feel like understanding his overall messaging in his raps is the more difficult part; he feels abstract to me and that can throw people off.

Bringing back the fishscale lyric; it could also mean:
DOOM produced some tracks on ghostface killahs “fishscale” album. He could be referencing a semi mainstream artist having a good album.
Big fish often identify a fish (its lunch) by seeing reflection off another’s fishscale.
The next line he references “Ishmael” which is a character used in the book Moby dick. “call me Ishmael”. Ishmael was a minor character of the book who turned out to the be the narrator speaking. This point is not as prevalent unless you get the “fishscale line”, but Ishmael also is referring to the Biblical character at the same.
It’s the depth of the lines and the references that you get over time that makes him one of the GOAT and maybe the best “wordsmith”

Y’all should check out KMD Peach Fuzz next And review that. That has a younger MF DOOM when he used to go by Zev Love X. I feel like Asia will love that!! DOOM does really obscure references, like usually people that are into geek culture usually catch his references. Like Asia was lost probably because of that she didn’t understand the references. Then not only that DOOM can easily switch up and manipulate the content even further lyrically. Hands down my favorite rapper of all time.

Listening to any of his songs for the first time you feel like you're behind and a lot of things go over your head + even if Ive listened to the song before I hear new rhymes, punchlines . etc
doom is so different and the lyrics are so "dense" , even i felt like "do i like this or not" vibe when I first listened to it. He's from New York, been around for a while , plenty of doom material out there and viktor vaugh is another alter ego he has w/ 2 great albums
One More Beer is one of his best songs, he was also in the group KMD from back in the day and a bunch of aliases like Metal Fingers or King Ghidorah to name just a few. He's from UK but raised in New York. His album Maddvillainy he did with Madlib is one of the greatest albums of all time, and Mm...Food, is an almost perfect album. He's worked with like every dude you named at the end.

I’m by far not an expert on Doom but I feel like a lot of people when they talk about his album, done with Madlib, they took psychedelic mushrooms for a creation of most of it. Really helps with some of the context I think.

Nobody gets even most of it the first time through, especially without the lyrics on screen. But there is dense DOOM and more open DOOM. The stuff off MM..FOOD is easier to pick up off first listen, perhaps.
