- 2010 Clarice Smith Distinguished Lectures in American Art. Erica Hirshler is Croll Senior Curator of American Paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She has written and lectured widely on American paintings of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly on American impressionism and the Boston School. Her most recent book, already in its second printing, Sargent's Daughters: The Biography of a Painting, examines the history of Sargent's masterpiece, The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit. Hirshler also organized and wrote the accompanying books for the exhibitions A Studio of Her Own: Women Artists in Boston 1870--1940 (2001) and Dennis Miller Bunker: American Impressionist (1995). She has contributed to exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts and other institutions, among them Americans in Paris, 1860--1900 (2006) and Sargent and the Sea (2009).
A tour de force with the painting and the vases together. A must see in any visit to Boston. Miss Hirsler's presentation was excellent, with a command of the subject matter and the cadence in bringing the viewer/listener into the time frame of the subject.
Fascinating indeed. Need some more time to digest it all and will come back at it at a later time, when I have watched it one or two times more. I am a fan of Finger Sargent myself.
Congratulations on the fluid presentation!
Wonderful presentation by Erica Hirshler..mixed with subtle humor and insights!
On Madame X her response to why did he repaint the shoulder strap is "Honestly he was embarrassed" not backed up, not cited, while I admire her knowledge overall Im not convinced, especially when we now know what a scandal it caused such so that he moved to England...
Great presentation! thank you
Thank you for a fabulous presentation! From a non-professional, the Boit picture’s compositional “Urlinie” seemingly also evokes Degas-the green curve from the vases through the rug, the opposing white curve, the not-so-subtle correspondences between the girls and various of his ballerina renderings-to me, quite as much as of Velasquez. Would that have been intentional, do you think?
Decent presentation except my personal peeve with the lecturer's pronunciation of Velasquez.
This should be named "Looking at the Boit Family"
Fabulous presentation.
A lot of people on here who seem to know more than the scholar and her extensive research! Personally I wouldn'tt have the temerity to be so presumptuous. I listened to learn.
6.36 for those who like to skip tedious intros.
I do like to know something about the presenter and it also is interesting to find out what the art community is up to.
Thank you
Thank you!!
Arts lecture should never be personal but do diligent research to present facts and let the audience to have their own interpretation
Great! Very informative.
In a new video , an explanation of the Boit painting is revealed " John Singer Sargent : Secrets of Composition and Design"

ممتاز
great presentation, however i feel as if her narrative voice is rather mechanical
