Who would have thought that the theme from a second rate fifties prison movie titled Unchained would become one of the most recorded, most loved and most played tunes of all time. I never tire of it no matter whose version it is.
So, I'm a man of some years and first heard this sung by Al Hibbler and then Roy Hamilton. A decade or so later here comes Bobby Hatfield and the Righteous Brothers to completely take ownership of this song. Still touches me and at certain times when I think back on my life, brings a tear. Just glad I can still feel the emotion of the song.
Well said, Broadside. That’s it in a nutshell. Partly it was this exquisite song that these writers delivered, then toss in Elvis’s rendition of it, and presto!…one song for the ages.
Our next selection will be Taylor Swift's, "Look What You Made Me do." THIS is what they mean by writing "songs." The music transports you as much as the lyrics. Great job guys.
Oddly enough the best instrumental version of this song I have heard is solo guitar by Duane Eddy. You hear and feel the feeling he put into each note. My favorite version is one of the first ones by Les Baxter orchestra and chorus and they skip some of the lyrics. Another great vocal version is by a young Lennon sisters on the Welk show. All these are on youtube.
Way too slow for the orchestral version. Would probably make a good lyrical accompaniment. I applaud the effort though, it takes a lot of talent to do this.

Could not have said it better. Check out the Mantovani version.
