The use of the plastic wrap slightly smooths out the markings created, resulting in the finished texture not having that harsh edge where the clay slightly peels up because of the tool. Very useful for creating subtle and delicate detailing.
They all look awesome! Some artists will use plastic wrap on their clay sculptures so that they are only indenting the clay instead of cutting through it. It helps to round over the edges of the lines and minimizes the crumblies that you get when you scrape directly on the clay

A little pro tip for the split sculptures with a flat, symmetrical split: if you make the seam between the two halves white (layer of paint, vinyl, resin pigment, whatever floats your boat) the 'clear' side will pop WAY more as a clear, standalone half. If you make the seam black, and REALLY push the gloss on that clear half, it will look stunning with even a slight light around, under, or behind it. Either way, putting a solid white or black barrier between the two halves will make the clear half look 'correct'; whether you like the dark contrast from a black barrier or the almost self-illuminating look of a white barrier, that's all up to artist's choice and intent! I'd definitely recommend testing this method out. (I once tested it by pouring a small creature in clear, then cut it down the middle with a band saw, painted one flat face white and the other black, then re-joined them with some ca glue and honestly that look was more wild than I was expecting!)
@@BMSculptures I may or may not have accidentally discovered that technique when I dropped a clear sculpture and it cracked in half almost along the middle. My attempt to glue it back together left a white layer between the two halves. Crazy how the wildest accidents can lead to cool discoveries :)
What about a mirrored divide? Cut a piece of the mirrored acrylic on your laser that is the same profile, bevel the edges, glue it to the clear half before pouring the dark half. The bevel would make it form a sharper corner with the coloured resin so you don't see the thickness of the sheet.
@@averyshred A fine idea, though you'd have to match the refraction of your mirror material and your resin pretty well, which I think can be pretty challenging!
Very often resin has a yellow tint to it, to even it out and make it even more clear people usually put some purple in it, since these colors cancel each other out. That could be why you got a greenish brown
@@BMSculptures The reason you got brown is because the two dyes you used weren't really "blue"; they were some mixture of pigments to make up the blue color that the manufacturer was aiming for. when you mixed them, you got brown. I'd recommend doing a small batch test next time, just to be safe.
@@BEdmonson85I used to work at a paint store and a paint factory, doing volumetric tinting, my job was coloring paint. I am pretty sure that ur right about the different colors used by the manufacturers to get blue. He's probably mixing a dozen or so tint colors in there and they all add up to what he got. People skilled at matching and tinting paint are very impressive, and I'm not one of them LoL.

3:48 chemical reaction, gotta be. Something in one of the dyes attacked the molecules that make the colour and changed it to a different molecule, in turn changing the colour. Pigments often have many ring structures (which have many electrons another reactive molecule might react with and that reaction changes the molecules shape and makes it catch light differently).
I assume the dyes are formulated to avoid processes like this, but if the two dyes are from different companies/series or even of different age obviously that balancing doesnt apply because the producer wouldnt be able to predict that those different dyes would be mixed some day

So the reason you got brown, this is from my experience with paint rather than ink. You only get the colour you expect to get when mixing single pigment paints. EG - mixing single pigment red with a single pigment yellow will give you the orange you expect. But most paint companies mix different pigments to get "unique" colours. So your two blue colours probably contain mixes of different pigments, and the mixture of all the pigments in both make brown.
Totally agree. I was thinking the blue (added to the green already mixed) probably had some red in it. When the three primary colours are mixed, you’ll end up with brown.
Came to say this, most blue alcohol inks especially purple contain different mix of pigments to one and other, and combining them can cause complete opposite to what you are going for, god damn you science

Great video! Being a parent myself...that moment with your daughter was the best. I was considering trying sculpting with clay myself. My youngest daughter is one talented artist and multi-medium wizard which is probably why I'm inspired to try it, but something about recreating textures of various skins and cloth in clay fascinates me.
As a frequent scuba diver, I would LOVE to see a sculpted nudibranch. They're a type of sea slug and have absolutely stunning colors and patterns, I think an epoxy version of that would look amazing!

Don’t know if someone already said this (to many comments) , but using the plastic to create lines gives them a softer, rounder look. Side not, the background noise/music around 15 minutes in is irritating to my ears, I’m autistic and sensitive to certain sounds. No criticism of you but just wanted to let you know. I enjoy your videos and enjoy listening to your narration
I love that while you are experimenting with different materials and method, you are not afraid to show failures. One feature I might suggest for mold casting is the use of sprues and vents. For example, a vent on the chin could allow excess air to eacape predictably. A little more finishing needed at the end. But if the objective is a clear pour, the predictability is worth the trade off.
on the color mixing for the ice look. many paints and inks are multi pigmented to create the exact color that the brand wants in a cheaper way. but unlike mixing single pigment colors that do exactly what you want, those multi pigment colors will go towards a brown when you mix different once together. just like how you get brown when you're mixing all the colors together? also, putting plastic on clay to scrape in details gives a cleaner look that doesn't leave behind small clay pieces on the side from where it was pushed towards?

Blake, First you had father/daughter time which she will remember forever, great job! The ideas and concept of your experiments is a learning curve. You had ideas and you executed them. Now you can learn and make adjustments as needed. The rhino slices would be a great idea with walnut. Never stop learning and experimenting. Hi Blake! I really enjoyed this video! I love experiments! I like the slicing idea too. Anything to save time. Maybe you could make small blanks of the different ice colors for future reference. A lot of people also make reference pieces of resin with all the inks and colorants so they know what colors they have and what the colors look like with different amounts of drops or scoops of color. You could mix colors too, so that you know what you have. I loved your daughters Halloween decor the best. Yall spending time is so cool! I love squirrels because I raised one. So if I had a choice of what to carve. Of course it would be a squirrel!

First, Respect! HUGE life/career change. I just discovered you and haven't had a chance to watch any of your other vids, but I'm looking forward to it. I have worked with resin/epoxy for years, long before it became the "in" thing to use. I think the ice effect you are looking for would be best accomplished with LIGHTLY blue tinted resin pieces in a clear, very, very lightly frosted (maybe a mild glittery white pigment dust or a light iridescent.) I've followed a couple on here for years that I think you might find interesting in how he applies unusual ideas and concepts to create incredible pieces. Not everything he does is my cup of tea, but that's the beauty of art. The channel is positive couple. Again, kudos and I'm looking forward to more!!
My favorite was the mirror sliced rhino. My father’s favorite animal was the rhino. Now that he’s gone, I can’t see a rhino without thinking of him. Love Love this one. But truthfully , they all were awesome. Love your work. Looking forward to the next one!

These sculptures are super cool! When you were talking about using different coloured epoxy shards, the first thing that jumped to mind was using it to carve actual dual-coloured animals. Like black shards in clear/white resin to carve a zebra, or black and yellow for a huge wasp or bee
I love your sculpts, the process and reveals. I've particularly enjoyed your work with resin and wood. I'd love to see that combo with a wooden Cross, partial wooden man at the base with perhaps the start of his backbone, ribs and heart in wood. With the rest of the body in clear resin. The man would be in a kneeling position of prayer before the cross. Thanks and keep up the great work.
I was going to say I loved the polar bear, and I do, but at the end of the video, when you talk about all the different materials you could do the rhino in I decided that was my second favorite. My first, number one favorite is the zombie/alien because that was a project with your daughter. I love seeing children getting involved with their parents' art. Little minds are a wonderful thing to watch grow and evolve.
Great sculptures as always. The polar bear was my favourite,and I agree that maybe darker shards in clear resin would look great too. Maybe snowflake shaped white shards in a darker resin could be interesting? The rhino was great too. It would be great to see you do a green sea turtle in wood and resin. Maybe swimming through kelp?

The combinations are endless, using sliced , fractured epoxy shards, wood etc like you said, polar bear would have been amazing with dark blue shards, with light tint outer layer. I think you are one fine artist!

I'm an environmental scientist, and your polar bear sculputure really speaks to me on a deep metaphorical level. A plastic polar bear embedded with plastic water and plastic crumbling ice shows our human damage to its native enviroment; melting ice everywhere due to the petroleum industry, and real polar bears being clogged with petrochemical plastic as a result of being at the top of the food chain: plankton eating fish eat plastic, then get eaten by bigger fish and seals, and then getting eaten by polar bears, whose bodies cannot get rid of the plastic they consume. I don't know if that was your intended message, but I love it all the same
Hey Blake. I taught advanced art for 29 years and used the layering technique with crescent art board to have the students make sculptures of cars that they would sand down into their design and then do the same for the wheels and then drill holes for axles, attach the wheels have them paint the cars and then race in a “derby car” style downhill race in a tournament. Lots of fun.
All the sculptures are awesome. Great philosophy about life and mistakes. The polar bear, I really liked the pale bottom. I thought it looked like a neat base to have the rest of the sculpture upon. The human/alien looked rad! I could see many possibilities. You have done a lot of progress for only working with clay once before. The rhino is very cool with the mirrored acrylic. For the insides of the legs, if they do not overlap at the edges of the outer pieces you may be able to invert your cut and have a reflected portion exposed on the inside of the leg. Experiments are great for progressing, as you have shown. Thanks for all the wonderful art!

all of these are great, I liked how the alien man book holder came out the best. I think one of the most interesting animals is an anteater, it'd be lovely to see you carve an anteater! also, the idea of putting flowers in clear/lightly colored epoxy and incorporating that into a wooden sculpture would look beautiful.
The alien/human head could be used as bookends. Love the idea of repurposing the oops with the first head mold. I think it was a great Daddy/Daughter moment. Love the ice bear sculpture too,
The rhino, the polar bear, and the book ends are my favorite. That concept with the polar bear would b an awesome experiment wi5h different colors. It'd b something to really experiment with in many different combinations. I'd start with small scale tests to see what would look good together, but that's me. A clear with gold pieces would look really nice. Also the slices with purpleheart and yellowheart alternating would b really cool too.

Also a bag round the mold with rice or marbles or beans or pellets poured in around that can take up extra space, so if there are leaks there isn't as much space for the leak to try to fill, and the bag, or two for security, means that substrate can be endlessly re-used. Cat litter would work well too, like that crystal stuff or otherwise.
I liked the clay sculpture with both sides of the head together. I would like to see it cast in bronze. It is amazing to me that it is only your second time using clay. You are a natural.

There is a product that I believe is called "mirror effect" or something close. It's basically a spray paint that can be painted on the backside of glass to create a mirror and it works pretty well. I think on your split sculpture if you put a barrier coat between the two halves so that you could block the reflection it could help. Possibly with the mirror effect although I'm not very familiar with epoxy molds and if a barrier coat would affect the adherence but since you you were asking for ideas thats what came to mind when i saw how it turned out. Cool stuff you are doing, I like how you just roll with ideas and experiments and how you show the pitfalls and mistakes. A lot of people would just scrap the idea and it would never make it out for anyone to see And creating art is full of pitfalls and mistakes. Very encouraging.
I so appreciate your hunger to always improve, to learn, to be a student of your craft. The sculpting part is quite interesting. I'm sure you've heard of Jim McKenzie...if not, you will not be disappointed.
I liked them all. You should try using more white with the blue for the bear, and maybe some white underneath to resemble snowy ground. I wish I had a place to play !! You are lucky!!!
I like the sculpture with epoxy shards the best. It would be fun to have all kinds of colors of shards like confetti in a deep blue epoxy for a crazy galaxy look.
We sometimes have clients that like the 'broken leather effect' on they're ceiling, to get that effect into the plaster etc we use carrier bags to crinkle and crease to get the best effect without looking artificial. Amazing work though. I love how you create these pieces of art. Keep them coming.
My school mascot was a polar bear and always got a soft spot for them. Looks so cool with the shards. Maybe have the base the bear sits on be a brighter blue almost white, while the bear is more the darker blue you were looking for. Beautiful work as always!
Thanx for the vid! The color change is because the one looks more like it has a yellow tone to it. The other blue is probably a mixed color to and not a true blue pigment. It seems it had some red in it to add darkness. So than we have all 3 colors. It is very interesting how big the change was.

Hi Blake: When I fuse glass, there are certain colors, that when mixed will turn brown. It has to do with the formulation of the colors. Some are created with sulfur and some with copper. You can't mix copper and sulfur containing colors, or you get brown. Most blues & yellow are such colors. So, check the color formulations you are using. And, I really liked the polar bear the most.

My logo is an indigo bear, so of course, the bear is my fav. I think the blue ice with clear “water” would read better. I am so glad you stuck books in the head. When you cut them apart I was screaming “make bookends!” 😂. Good work, Blake. I can’t wait to see how you expand these ideas. 💕
It may have been mentioned early on in the video, but as a FYI to anyone experimenting, I learned the hard way attempting to get a similar "ice chunk" look by embedding a clear epoxy form inside a larger epoxy colored form does NOT work the same as embedding plexiglass or other materials seen here. I wanted a floating skull inside a large crystal that would appear as the ice chunks in the vid, but since epoxy inside epoxy has the same refractive index the clear skull simply disappears. There may be tweaks to help it along or ways to use that property to one's advantage, but for the ice chunk specifically look be aware. Epoxy ain't cheap! Also, this was my first introduction to the channel. Great stuff! 👍✔️🔔

4:52 I’m a digital artist and faces are my strong suit, I’m *really* good at faces and always have been. As such, it never occurred to me that not many artists would find faces to be easy Also, I adore how you used that failed mold as a bonding experience with your daughter, I know she would have been so thrilled
Love the experimentation. I think the ice concept in rally cool and it could be so many different combinations based on the sculpture itself. Like the ice fir the polar bear, or orange/red/yellow for a volcano/fire, or blue/green for a humming bird etc...
Blue "ice" with orange outside. 😊 when I saw the slices, I thought a UA-camr I watch Kanella Ciraco . She has a machine that cuts layers like that in wood. Pretty cool!!
I think reversing the colors in the ice polar bear would look great. I really like the layered rhino. I can see where there would be a lot of options to use that process.
Ooh, I had a fun idea! With the ice cube trick, I'd try some form of black with high-pigmented gold for the cubes, then carve a dragon! I think it'd look beautiful and mysterious! If you use smaller flakes of ice, it'd look like you're uncovering hidden gems. You're a really talented artist and all the sculptures turned out great!
The plastic allows for rounded edges on the scratches. Scratching on the clay directly will initially give you sharp edges until you smooth it, potentially erasing your desired effect.
So looking forward to seeing you do the sliced technique with the foam. Only recently started using that medium, and I’m experiencing a serious learning curve - mainly how insanely long it takes to sculpt/sand/smooth. Having the slices already shaped would seriously cut my time into a third of what it currently takes and I’m not doing life sized sculptures - just giant versions of 80’s and 90’s toys for a show - a quarter of the size you’re doing. I’d like to level up to life sized sculptures - but I’m scared I’d never see my kids again 🤣
T and I love the Polar bear best!!! All of these concepts are cool and loved the video. Made her day when she heard there was a new BM waiting for her/us tonight! She wants to see a full sized horse next. I would love to see something with wings using the shattered epoxy technique. Like a dragonfly, bee, fairy or something with clear/iridescent wings and use a tiny bit of chameleon mica pigment to add a component of iridescence to it!
When you use UV resin for a clear coat, try putting the finished product in water after you cure it and use the light on it *while* it's in the water. The water helps to bounce the UV rays around to make for a better and clearer finish. Just something to keep in mind.
It might be possible to use a slicer for 3D printing to slice the model for the laser or even templates for cutting out of foam. Scale down the model, slice with zero infill, one perimiter, then scale the resulting g-code. Or maybe it's possible to create a "printer profile" with a bed size of 2000x2000 mm and a layer height of 25mm?
The plastic is supposed to leave an organic type patterning but needs more compression against it to leave the markings. It can be used in paint applications aswell
Blake my god! Those experiments were so educational, that’s what I love about watching your videos. Personally I loved the human/ alien sculpture and I was gonna suggest bookends for the plastic one but you beat me to it. The whole idea of using the slicing method to help you use the time better was genius!!
whenever i see thick ice blocks in nature (Lake Superior), the green/blue seems to illuminate the clear-ish ice from within. the deeper you look into the ice, the deeper the green/blue hue becomes. It does seem to glow from the depths.
For the polar bear perhaps don’t pressure pot away all the bubbles - ice has bubbles… then you could do bubbly clear resin chunks in bubble free clear resin. Like fridge ice in water. Great channel too. I love your dedication, artistry and patience.

I would make a giraffe with the ‘glass shard’ concept, and have the shards be its spot pattern.

I am pretty sure that ur right about the different colors used by the manufacturers to get blue. He's probably mixing a dozen or so tint colors in there and they all add up to what he got. People skilled at matching and tinting paint are very impressive, and I'm not one of them LoL.

the only think i know abt such unusual color changes are chemical reactions, i know nothing deeper than that but it is super fascinating
3:48 chemical reaction, gotta be. Something in one of the dyes attacked the molecules that make the colour and changed it to a different molecule, in turn changing the colour. Pigments often have many ring structures (which have many electrons another reactive molecule might react with and that reaction changes the molecules shape and makes it catch light differently).
I assume the dyes are formulated to avoid processes like this, but if the two dyes are from different companies/series or even of different age obviously that balancing doesnt apply because the producer wouldnt be able to predict that those different dyes would be mixed some day
My favourite is the polar bear, and I think the reverse colours of blue chips in clear epoxy would be really effective.
I really want to try that.

So the reason you got brown, this is from my experience with paint rather than ink.
You only get the colour you expect to get when mixing single pigment paints. EG - mixing single pigment red with a single pigment yellow will give you the orange you expect. But most paint companies mix different pigments to get "unique" colours. So your two blue colours probably contain mixes of different pigments, and the mixture of all the pigments in both make brown.
This makes complete sense and sounds like it is what happened here. Thanks!
Totally agree. I was thinking the blue (added to the green already mixed) probably had some red in it. When the three primary colours are mixed, you’ll end up with brown.

Yes that was my assumption also. If you mix a warm blue and a cool Blue you can get a muddy colour.
Came to say this, most blue alcohol inks especially purple contain different mix of pigments to one and other, and combining them can cause complete opposite to what you are going for, god damn you science

Great video! Being a parent myself...that moment with your daughter was the best. I was considering trying sculpting with clay myself. My youngest daughter is one talented artist and multi-medium wizard which is probably why I'm inspired to try it, but something about recreating textures of various skins and cloth in clay fascinates me.
As a frequent scuba diver, I would LOVE to see a sculpted nudibranch. They're a type of sea slug and have absolutely stunning colors and patterns, I think an epoxy version of that would look amazing!

Don’t know if someone already said this (to many comments) , but using the plastic to create lines gives them a softer, rounder look.
Side not, the background noise/music around 15 minutes in is irritating to my ears, I’m autistic and sensitive to certain sounds. No criticism of you but just wanted to let you know. I enjoy your videos and enjoy listening to your narration

I love that while you are experimenting with different materials and method, you are not afraid to show failures. One feature I might suggest for mold casting is the use of sprues and vents. For example, a vent on the chin could allow excess air to eacape predictably. A little more finishing needed at the end. But if the objective is a clear pour, the predictability is worth the trade off.
on the color mixing for the ice look. many paints and inks are multi pigmented to create the exact color that the brand wants in a cheaper way. but unlike mixing single pigment colors that do exactly what you want, those multi pigment colors will go towards a brown when you mix different once together. just like how you get brown when you're mixing all the colors together?
also, putting plastic on clay to scrape in details gives a cleaner look that doesn't leave behind small clay pieces on the side from where it was pushed towards?

Now you can learn and make adjustments as needed. The rhino slices would be a great idea with walnut. Never stop learning and experimenting. Hi Blake! I really enjoyed this video! I love experiments! I like the slicing idea too. Anything to save time. Maybe you could make small blanks of the different ice colors for future reference. A lot of people also make reference pieces of resin with all the inks and colorants so they know what colors they have and what the colors look like with different amounts of drops or scoops of color. You could mix colors too, so that you know what you have. I loved your daughters Halloween decor the best. Yall spending time is so cool! I love squirrels because I raised one. So if I had a choice of what to carve. Of course it would be a squirrel!

I have worked with resin/epoxy for years, long before it became the "in" thing to use. I think the ice effect you are looking for would be best accomplished with LIGHTLY blue tinted resin pieces in a clear, very, very lightly frosted (maybe a mild glittery white pigment dust or a light iridescent.)
I've followed a couple on here for years that I think you might find interesting in how he applies unusual ideas and concepts to create incredible pieces. Not everything he does is my cup of tea, but that's the beauty of art. The channel is positive couple.

My favorite was the mirror sliced rhino. My father’s favorite animal was the rhino. Now that he’s gone, I can’t see a rhino without thinking of him. Love Love this one. But truthfully , they all were awesome. Love your work. Looking forward to the next one!

When you were talking about using different coloured epoxy shards, the first thing that jumped to mind was using it to carve actual dual-coloured animals. Like black shards in clear/white resin to carve a zebra, or black and yellow for a huge wasp or bee

I love your sculpts, the process and reveals. I've particularly enjoyed your work with resin and wood. I'd love to see that combo with a wooden Cross, partial wooden man at the base with perhaps the start of his backbone, ribs and heart in wood. With the rest of the body in clear resin. The man would be in a kneeling position of prayer before the cross. Thanks and keep up the great work.

I was going to say I loved the polar bear, and I do, but at the end of the video, when you talk about all the different materials you could do the rhino in I decided that was my second favorite. My first, number one favorite is the zombie/alien because that was a project with your daughter. I love seeing children getting involved with their parents' art. Little minds are a wonderful thing to watch grow and evolve.

Great sculptures as always. The polar bear was my favourite,and I agree that maybe darker shards in clear resin would look great too. Maybe snowflake shaped white shards in a darker resin could be interesting? The rhino was great too. It would be great to see you do a green sea turtle in wood and resin. Maybe swimming through kelp?

Small tip, as someone who’s worked with this material before. When adding pigments, a little goes a long way! Try one or two drops at most and stir to see what it does!

I'm an environmental scientist, and your polar bear sculputure really speaks to me on a deep metaphorical level. A plastic polar bear embedded with plastic water and plastic crumbling ice shows our human damage to its native enviroment; melting ice everywhere due to the petroleum industry, and real polar bears being clogged with petrochemical plastic as a result of being at the top of the food chain: plankton eating fish eat plastic, then get eaten by bigger fish and seals, and then getting eaten by polar bears, whose bodies cannot get rid of the plastic they consume. I don't know if that was your intended message, but I love it all the same

I taught advanced art for 29 years and used the layering technique with crescent art board to have the students make sculptures of cars that they would sand down into their design and then do the same for the wheels and then drill holes for axles, attach the wheels have them paint the cars and then race in a “derby car” style downhill race in a tournament. Lots of fun.
Just a thought....maybe, putting the epoxy-sheet into the freezer before trying to shatter it, might help........

The polar bear, I really liked the pale bottom. I thought it looked like a neat base to have the rest of the sculpture upon.
The human/alien looked rad! I could see many possibilities. You have done a lot of progress for only working with clay once before.
The rhino is very cool with the mirrored acrylic. For the insides of the legs, if they do not overlap at the edges of the outer pieces you may be able to invert your cut and have a reflected portion exposed on the inside of the leg.
Experiments are great for progressing, as you have shown. Thanks for all the wonderful art!

all of these are great, I liked how the alien man book holder came out the best. I think one of the most interesting animals is an anteater, it'd be lovely to see you carve an anteater! also, the idea of putting flowers in clear/lightly colored epoxy and incorporating that into a wooden sculpture would look beautiful.
The alien/human head could be used as bookends. Love the idea of repurposing the oops with the first head mold. I think it was a great Daddy/Daughter moment. Love the ice bear sculpture too,
The rhino, the polar bear, and the book ends are my favorite. That concept with the polar bear would b an awesome experiment wi5h different colors. It'd b something to really experiment with in many different combinations. I'd start with small scale tests to see what would look good together, but that's me. A clear with gold pieces would look really nice.
Also the slices with purpleheart and yellowheart alternating would b really cool too.

Also a bag round the mold with rice or marbles or beans or pellets poured in around that can take up extra space, so if there are leaks there isn't as much space for the leak to try to fill, and the bag, or two for security, means that substrate can be endlessly re-used. Cat litter would work well too, like that crystal stuff or otherwise.
I liked the clay sculpture with both sides of the head together. I would like to see it cast in bronze. It is amazing to me that it is only your second time using clay. You are a natural.

There is a product that I believe is called "mirror effect" or something close. It's basically a spray paint that can be painted on the backside of glass to create a mirror and it works pretty well. I think on your split sculpture if you put a barrier coat between the two halves so that you could block the reflection it could help. Possibly with the mirror effect although I'm not very familiar with epoxy molds and if a barrier coat would affect the adherence but since you you were asking for ideas thats what came to mind when i saw how it turned out. Cool stuff you are doing, I like how you just roll with ideas and experiments and how you show the pitfalls and mistakes. A lot of people would just scrap the idea and it would never make it out for anyone to see
And creating art is full of pitfalls and mistakes. Very encouraging.

I like the sculpture with epoxy shards the best. It would be fun to have all kinds of colors of shards like confetti in a deep blue epoxy for a crazy galaxy look.
We sometimes have clients that like the 'broken leather effect' on they're ceiling, to get that effect into the plaster etc we use carrier bags to crinkle and crease to get the best effect without looking artificial. Amazing work though. I love how you create these pieces of art. Keep them coming.

My school mascot was a polar bear and always got a soft spot for them. Looks so cool with the shards. Maybe have the base the bear sits on be a brighter blue almost white, while the bear is more the darker blue you were looking for. Beautiful work as always!

Thanx for the vid! The color change is because the one looks more like it has a yellow tone to it. The other blue is probably a mixed color to and not a true blue pigment. It seems it had some red in it to add darkness.
So than we have all 3 colors. It is very interesting how big the change was.

Hi Blake:
When I fuse glass, there are certain colors, that when mixed will turn brown. It has to do with the formulation of the colors. Some are created with sulfur and some with copper. You can't mix copper and sulfur containing colors, or you get brown. Most blues & yellow are such colors.
So, check the color formulations you are using.
And, I really liked the polar bear the most.
I have had the same experience with fabric dyes. I just put it down to a chemical reaction. Thanks for letting us know which one.

It's a tie between the human/alien and the rhino but the polar bear is really a cool concept too. I love the adventurousness of these experiments!
the colors i would use would be black resin shards, and red resin holding it together to make a western style dragon

It may have been mentioned early on in the video, but as a FYI to anyone experimenting, I learned the hard way attempting to get a similar "ice chunk" look by embedding a clear epoxy form inside a larger epoxy colored form does NOT work the same as embedding plexiglass or other materials seen here. I wanted a floating skull inside a large crystal that would appear as the ice chunks in the vid, but since epoxy inside epoxy has the same refractive index the clear skull simply disappears. There may be tweaks to help it along or ways to use that property to one's advantage, but for the ice chunk specifically look be aware. Epoxy ain't cheap!

Love the experimentation. I think the ice concept in rally cool and it could be so many different combinations based on the sculpture itself. Like the ice fir the polar bear, or orange/red/yellow for a volcano/fire, or blue/green for a humming bird etc...

I think reversing the colors in the ice polar bear would look great. I really like the layered rhino. I can see where there would be a lot of options to use that process.
Ooh, I had a fun idea! With the ice cube trick, I'd try some form of black with high-pigmented gold for the cubes, then carve a dragon! I think it'd look beautiful and mysterious! If you use smaller flakes of ice, it'd look like you're uncovering hidden gems. You're a really talented artist and all the sculptures turned out great!

The plastic allows for rounded edges on the scratches. Scratching on the clay directly will initially give you sharp edges until you smooth it, potentially erasing your desired effect.
Half face 3D picture frame with lights would be dope, like adding 3D trees, mountains around would be super dope.

So looking forward to seeing you do the sliced technique with the foam. Only recently started using that medium, and I’m experiencing a serious learning curve - mainly how insanely long it takes to sculpt/sand/smooth. Having the slices already shaped would seriously cut my time into a third of what it currently takes and I’m not doing life sized sculptures - just giant versions of 80’s and 90’s toys for a show - a quarter of the size you’re doing. I’d like to level up to life sized sculptures - but I’m scared I’d never see my kids again 🤣
T and I love the Polar bear best!!! All of these concepts are cool and loved the video. Made her day when she heard there was a new BM waiting for her/us tonight! She wants to see a full sized horse next. I would love to see something with wings using the shattered epoxy technique. Like a dragonfly, bee, fairy or something with clear/iridescent wings and use a tiny bit of chameleon mica pigment to add a component of iridescence to it!
When you use UV resin for a clear coat, try putting the finished product in water after you cure it and use the light on it *while* it's in the water. The water helps to bounce the UV rays around to make for a better and clearer finish. Just something to keep in mind.
It might be possible to use a slicer for 3D printing to slice the model for the laser or even templates for cutting out of foam.
Scale down the model, slice with zero infill, one perimiter, then scale the resulting g-code. Or maybe it's possible to create a "printer profile" with a bed size of 2000x2000 mm and a layer height of 25mm?
The plastic is supposed to leave an organic type patterning but needs more compression against it to leave the markings. It can be used in paint applications aswell

Personally I loved the human/ alien sculpture and I was gonna suggest bookends for the plastic one but you beat me to it. The whole idea of using the slicing method to help you use the time better was genius!!

whenever i see thick ice blocks in nature (Lake Superior), the green/blue seems to illuminate the clear-ish ice from within. the deeper you look into the ice, the deeper the green/blue hue becomes. It does seem to glow from the depths.

For the polar bear perhaps don’t pressure pot away all the bubbles - ice has bubbles… then you could do bubbly clear resin chunks in bubble free clear resin. Like fridge ice in water. Great channel too. I love your dedication, artistry and patience.
