Climbs & Descents of the Icefields Parkway | Columbia Icefield | Cycling Across Canada, Ep.15

- I leave Honeymoon Lake Campground and head towards my destination for the day - the Beauty Creek Wilderness Hostel - the most beautiful, enchanting spot on the Icefields Parkway. On the way there, I stop by Sunwapta Falls and get an amazing surprise when Marine and Nathan show up at the hostel later on in the day. We decide to continue riding together. Day 3 is challenging in terms of climbs. Steep, grueling uphills with multiple viewpoints along the way. When finishing the climb to Columbia Icefields Skywalk, I bump into Alec, who motivates me for the last few seconds of the grueling ascent. Wind - a powerful reminder that riding in the Rockies is controlled by the weather, and it changes quickly. We finally make it to the Columbia Icefield and I reward myself by getting the most expensive cup of Flat White I've ever had at this coffee shop. And then the descent ... The magical descent that has me stopping to let the brakes cool down. We reach the Rampart Campground where we meet new friends form Calgary.

Absolutely stunning! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Magic video.thanks for sharing. You’re such a happy person amd it’s infectious. Thankyou❤
Thanks for watching and for the lovely comment.
Wow! Absolutely beautiful footage.
Thank you!
another great video. thanks, really enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching!
Amazing footage. Keep it coming. I've watched every minute of your adventure. And I like your new Starbucks name.
Thank you for watching! Yes, Starbucks employers are always very creative when it comes to my name. 😂
Beyond words.
Happy New Year With many more Adventures.
Again enjoyed sharing your journey, great scenery and cheerful commentary.
Cheers Johno.
Thank you very much and happy 2023 to you as well!
So glad you enjoyed the Icefields!! Magnificent, huh??
Incredibly so!
Those views are truly stunning. Thanks for showing me how beautiful Alberta is. I have to admit that I've only found this video now, and that I've never ridden that route by bike (yet). Something to do for the summer.
The Icefields is spectacular. It was by far, the most beautiful passage of my trip. I would go back there again, and you are very lucky to live relatively close by. I met a couple who rode from Edmonton to Vancouver. We met at one of the campgrounds along the Icefields. So definitely a summer ride you could do.
Bonjour l'amie , 😎c'est vraiment superbe , merci beaucoup .👍 A très bientôt . Bonne fin d'année 2022 .
Thank you! This was one of my favourite parts of the ride. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Happy 2023 to you!
@@WheelsonaBike Merci . Bonne continuation .
sooo wonderful!!
Thank you.
Beautyfull scenery. Those are the really nice moments of cycling. I hope i can travel to the USA soon. I would really want to cycle The Great Devide.
I hope you're able to ride the Great Divide. I met a number of cyclists in Banff doing the ride. It's a different kind of an adventure for sure.
Fab views 😍
This video didn’t come in my feed for 8 days. And I’m glad I didn’t miss it out. Notifications are turned on even then.
I'm glad it arrived in your feed. I'm not sure what's going on with UA-cam's notifications.
Absolutely stunning beautiful landscapes! Cheers from Norway!
Thank you!
Aga, I watched this video with tears in my eyes. The scenery, the music…priceless. Thanks for another great video.
Thank you! It was such a beautiful ride. I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
Another great video! Awesome footage. When you go on a hike, where do you put all your gear? Do you take everything off the bike and lock it in a locker and then lock the bike?
I typically put a bike in an area with the least amount of foot traffic, and lock the bike to itself and the panniers (with a cable lock) to the bike. I take my valuables with me in my handlebar bag. If someone wanted to steal something, they could easily do so, as they'd just open the panniers. This hasn't happened yet. If I don't feel good about leaving the bike, I'll roll it with me as far as I can and then I just turn around. I haven't seen any lockers at tourist attractions, like the falls, but I would absolutely take advantage of those if they were available to me.
@@WheelsonaBike thanks for the reply. We are very careful when we do activities beyond the bike ride. Usually we will walk our bikes, lock them where we can see them, or have one of us stay with the bikes while the other goes into a store or restaurant. I think it is so sad that we have to carry all the extra weight of bike locks, not to mention the cost.
Yes. But that's how it is.
@@WheelsonaBike indeed
I was lucky enough to do this ride with my wife just before covid. Awesome views.
That must have been amazing (if you had good weather).
Another awesome video Agnieszka! Thanks for sharing such (especially during the climbs) BREATHTAKING beauty! These experiences make the effort worthwhile. Love the one pedal after another philosophy. Glad we could see Marine and Nathan again. Thanks for also doing the slog to edit these so we can enjoy! I particularly love how you try and get cyclists to talk on camera who you meet about their adventures.
Thank you and I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed the views. They were so incredible. You'll be seeing a lot of Marine and Nathan, as we ended up riding together until Drumheller, Alberta.
I met so many cyclists and missed many opportunities to capture their stories, sometimes I just wanted to talk to people without the camera. But I do enjoy the stories I captured as well, because people have such good stories.
This is amazing to ride there and see it all with your own eyes. Best luck and stay safe!
Thank you. It was an unforgettable experience.
So beautiful with all those waterfalls! Regards from Germany!
Thank you!
It must be so nice to re-live the experience as you're editing each video. Love your story-telling, great video "Aniska"!
It really is. Especially the Icefields. I LOVED riding there. It was the most spectacular and humbling experience. The mountains are so magnificent. It's hard to describe.
Also found my Starbucks name funny. 😉
Beautiful views. Great video. I liked the music.
Thank you.
Amazing scenery.
Yes. It was overwhelmingly beautiful.
Are there maps for the transcanada route?
Yes, there are many as people take different routes across. Here's a great facebook group that compiles a number of them facebook.com/BikeAcrossCanadaRouteNetwork?mibextid=ZbWKwL. I shared all my maps on Strava.
Why were you braking so much that they overheated? Too fast or too curvy? Just curious.
It was a steep, long downhill and I was reaching speeds of 55+ km/h. Windy and wet roads. I wasn't comfortable riding that fast with cars flying past me.
@@WheelsonaBike I totally get that. Having wiped out taking a too-sharp turn on a wet day (slow speed on my road bike), I understand.
Love your channel. Even the gear videos.👍
The best things about your production values is you've cared enough to mitigate or eliminate wind noise. Instant turn off when that makes the final edit.
I did my best, but it's still there at times. I totally understand though, I don't like listening to wind noise either.
Do you have episode than mentions helmet light?
No, I don't. But it's the Brightside Bike Lights light and I wear it all the time brightside.bike/product/topside-helmet-light/.
@@WheelsonaBike ok I have seen those on the you know who site. I was thinking of option with a universal clip + high output compact flashlight.
I have a bike light review coming out in the near future, so that may be something of interest.
By any chance could you let me know the type of bike mirror you are using and if you are happy with it.
I also have a kona sutra and have yet to find a mirror I'm happy with.
I use the M-Wave Spy Mini II 3D Mirror amzn.to/3UTTomP (affiliate link). I'm very happy with the mirror, it's fully adjustable and relatively robust. The attachment ended up braking after multiple bike falls and months on the road. I now use a thick elastic to attach it to the bike and this works perfectly.
@@WheelsonaBike thanks so much for getting back to me. 1 question. Does the rubber band hold it tight enough, does the mirror vibrate?
The mirror does not vibrate at all. It didn't before I broke the attachment and it doesn't vibrate with tru rubber bands holding it.
@@WheelsonaBike thank-you. If I don't get one for Xmas will get one via your link.
What bike are you riding?
I rode the 2021 Kona Sutra Touring.
@@WheelsonaBike thats what I'm looking at. With all the gear on your bike what is the slowest speed you can go climbing before you tip over? Plus what was your crankrings and cassette size...I want MTB drivetrain setup so I can just spin my pedals and stay seated on steep climbs.
Wow, this has got to be one of your best rides so far 😊 I'm editing my Norway videos right now and I'm slightly worried that Norway might not win the most waterfalls world cup after all 🤔😊
Oh, I think Norway just might be the winner in terms of waterfalls. But this ride was spectacular and I'd do it again!
@@WheelsonaBike yeah probably, 😊can't wait for the rest of the vids👋
@@wannagobiking9071 Never been to Canada but Norway is just amazing! Have cycled Lofoten? Senja?
