You might want to take this down. Lots of people are making this a racist thing when it's not. Unfortunately, Americans are not grown up enough to handle associations of MSG. MSG contains glutamine, which is an excitatory neurotransmitter. People with nervous system imbalances or those who are taking medicines for depression should definitely be careful with their total intake of MSG. While glutamate occurs naturally in the body, supplementing food with it artificially raises its levels, sometimes beyond which might be healthy for some people. Just like some people should not take too much salt for their health, others may need to restrict MSG. People should not be shamed if they prefer to not have their food supplemented with MSG-- they may have valid reasons for it, and it should not be necessary to explain your health problems to people when all you want to do is eat out sometimes.

I know someone who gets bad migraines after eating msg. Not just chinese food, yes no chips that have it, no fried chicken and many chain restaurants that are not Asian use msg. So constantly reading labels, checking websites for allergen information. Just like some people who have peanut allergies one would not tell them to just eat some. Same for artificial sweeteners, I can't always detect it in flavor, but depending on how much it is used I can tell probably in 80% of food that have it as I get bad stomach pains after about 30 minutes. So if someone wants to avoid MSG or anything else they have a valid reason. No one should be shamed because they ask about whats in food.
Some people are allergic/sensitive to MSG. They need to read labels carefully, and avoid it. Everybody else is probably fine, though avoiding highly processed foods, full of sugar and salt, is probably best. But you can use MSG in home cooking, starting with unprocessed ingredients.
The "fear" of MSG probably came from it not having a casual name for an average buyer, it's acronym is the chemical composition itself. like if i don't know what it is I would double think before buying. Imagine if salt is still called sodium chloride in the market lmao
Please people stop making the association of Chinese food with msg a racist thing. It's got nothing to do with racism. Throwing that everywhere is not cool, and frankly it's getting old.
There was a study years ago to determine if MSG was indeed causing headaches, They gave 50% of the subjects food with MSG and the other 50% a placebo. No one knew if they were eating MSG or not. They found the amount of people developing headaches the same from each group. My sister in law always complained about MSG and I told her it was all in her head! LOL
If msg is wrong, I don’t wanna be right I think if there’s one thing you can reliably pin on msg is that it makes things taste so much better that you might eat more than you otherwise would - but isn’t that why any ingredients and/or seasonings get added to a dish anyway?
My question to people who harp on about how bad msg: If msg is so terrible how do Asian people have much better health compared to other groups, despite eating msg on the regular?
Because of Ajinomoto, my two brothers had to have their appendix removed. They eat the foods in which Ajinomoto was used every day because those foods taste amazing. As a result, both of them had to have appendix surgery. I feel uncomfortable when someone is going to remove organs from my body 🥺
And in summary, too much of anything is unhealthy. To further elaborate: the action done to completely neglect overall health that would make you severely sick.
I’m Chinese and Korean. I can’t eat at certain restaurants because the same effect happen after eating. Extreme drowsiness, followed by heart palpitations. When I eat certain broth boullion same thing. I don’t eat fast food. If it’s not the msg by itself, it may be in combination with other chemicals like many things in this world. It could also be the byproduct of the manufacture of msg. Either way, boiling it down to racism helps no one, and neither is treating us who have symptoms like we’re crazy.
Americans love msg. Got to costco business and they sell the accent brand of msg used in many is restaurants for soups. Parmesan cheese is loaded with msg which is why Americans love it. It’s loaded into Doritos and snacks to as it enhances low flavors making cheap chips tasted great. Glutamic acid is sprayed on apples as a preservative. Basically an aversion to Chinese msg is just racism as very little is added. It’s no where near the msg used in American fast foods, chips, soups, and parmasan cheese. Yet they only single out Chinese msg. Sounds based not on science but racism.

Right MSG is pretty much and most of our food, and in most of our seasonings, tomatoes, garlic, same with organic foods. And natural ingredients. Pretty much everything has chemicals in it , some say MSG is unnatural or has chemicals in it. And so does every other food. And most these chemicals are harmless , organic and natural ingredients. You should ask that to people who end up in hospital because of MSG though they had asked the restaurant if MSG was used in their food, and the answer was 'no' Your argument is lab made vitamin A is safe. What used in Asian restaurants are totally different then MSG in tomatoes. Anyway, no one eats 2 kilos of tomato in one go.
Food Network told people they were doing a steady on MSG while feeding them Chinese food and then asked him how many of them had headaches because of the food they had just eaten. A few people raise their hands and said they had headaches because of their food! Then they were informed that no MSG at all was used in their food😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
MSG is “fed” or dosed to mice in labs to create “fat models” or obese mice for diabetic models. There are plenty of research papers on it… but the average person either doesn’t understand the papers… or don’t want to do the research themselves. MSG is a migraine trigger for me. I can have it in small amounts, but large amounts is horribly painful for me. My main problem is when they circumvent labeling by saying “yeast extract” “natural flavoring” or one of the many other names they use to hide it in food. Full ingredient transparency needs to be practiced when it is something you are ingesting.
I’m sensitive to msg, it over stimulates me, I wake up really early and I’m fidgety and full of energy…. I sometimes eat food high in msg on purpose when I know I am going to need energy or to be alert in the mornings, it’s like a legal high for me, I get a great meal the night before and then I can deliver in the morning, no grogginess. Use it to your advantage I say
I can tell when I have eaten a product containing MSG. My heart starts racing. As long as I read labels and avoid anything with MSG, I don’t have a problem.

No. But some people have an elevated reaction. You could actually address that. No need to pretend it’s just racism. It’s okay, you can try being honest next time.
it's just a tiny bit salty. Saltiness comes from sodium ions and MSG has less sodium per weight compared to regular salt. So, if you wanna use it like salt, make about 4:1 (adjust proportions to taste, sometimes even 1:1 could work) mix of salt and MSG and use that
Asians eat MSG in nearly every savory dish across virtually every asian country from Laos to Japan and they're living longer than we do by a considerable margin. Not saying MSG is making them love longer, just saying it probably isn't making them unhealthier.
MSG in food actually makes me physically ill....nausea...vomiting..to the point that I have ended up in the hospital...I won't eat anything that has this additive....my internist discovered this was the cause cuz I would get sick after eating Chinese food.,.I always ask if this is in any food I order....lesson learned the hard way!
Seriously? It’s unnecessary if the Chinese sauces are good. MSG gives we very bad migraines and I’m not normally a migraine sufferer. Totally not needed in Chinese cooking.
It's the same as salt. Sodium chloride is essential to life but overdose of it is harmful to health especially to the blood pressure. MSG is the same it contains Sodium, according to health research Sodium in MSG is more harmful than in salt. The problem is not it's safe or not, but it's how much we take.
I’ve heard Chinese food syndrome was actually caused by substandard oil or spoiled ingredients used at the time. Now that food safety laws are more strict youre much less likely to get the “syndrome”
From a biological standpoint, it's definitely possible to have a negative feeling when ingesting msg or any other synthetic flavor (ie. sucralose) the flavor triggers a biological reaction for digestion in the case of sweetener the body could produce insulin in preparation for the sugars but if there aren't any sugars being ingested the excess insulin could cause a server drop in your blood sugar, so with msg your body is expecting proteins and produced different hormones, so if your eating msg without enough protein in your food it's very possible for it to have a negative effect... Just be educated. Don't just rely on a you tube video.
I dunno man I didn’t know accent was MSG but I noticed every time I used it it made my food taste better but made me sick and made my legs and feet go numb and tingly. I found out it was MSG after I stopped using it.
Today's MSG is not the same as the original which is derived from seaweed. Naturally occurring glutamic acid (glutamate) in foods is “bound” to other amino acids or proteins. MSG is a synthetic reproduction of this natural glutamate. It is chemically produced and not bound. That information is omitted in this video. Instead, MSG is compared to the natural glutamate in our body, tomatoes, cheese, meats or seaweed. Wrong information!
In my case some msg brands are safe for me to eat, and some cause me itches & allergies. So far Ajinomoto brand's msg is safe for me; never had an issue with it
Aji No Moto is the OG of MSG. As a kid in the 70's we had Accent on the table along with salt n pepper, but today as a 50 something, I exclusively use Aji No Moto
It’s mostly made from seaweed, which is pretty much good for you.??? I’m not sure about the modern day MSG they might be using different ingredients ???
Interesting. My dad worked in R&D for Maggi (I even named the teddy bear they sent me when I was in the hospital Maggi) . Yes, the same Maggi that makes bouillon cubes and liquid gravy maker (MSG). It's been a long time since I've seen the packaging so I've forgotten what the liquid is called. Aside from the migraines it can give some people, I thought the problem was sodium and how people were cutting back on it. I was surprised to see how widely available the liquid still is around the world. By the way, if you check most menus, you'll notice that most Chinese restaurants do not use MSG in their cooking.
most of the restaurant sauces are mixed ingredient, and some of it guaranteed to contains MSG... although daily use of MSG is can be considered "safe", it also applied to general eating rule : don't consume anything excessively

Quote of the day: Make sh*t good MSG”
But is MSG salty? If i buy a bag of it, should i also add salt to the food or MSG also have salt?
Nope MSG is already salty. No need to add salt once you have add MSG
it's just a tiny bit salty. Saltiness comes from sodium ions and MSG has less sodium per weight compared to regular salt. So, if you wanna use it like salt, make about 4:1 (adjust proportions to taste, sometimes even 1:1 could work) mix of salt and MSG and use that
Basically the same way weed was stigmatized
Asians eat MSG in nearly every savory dish across virtually every asian country from Laos to Japan and they're living longer than we do by a considerable margin. Not saying MSG is making them love longer, just saying it probably isn't making them unhealthier.
MSG in food actually makes me physically ill....nausea...vomiting..to the point that I have ended up in the hospital...I won't eat anything that has this additive....my internist discovered this was the cause cuz I would get sick after eating Chinese food.,.I always ask if this is in any food I order....lesson learned the hard way!
Do you eat the foot that contain it naturally?
I dont think msg only can cause that much of a problem. I think you have other issues to worry about.
People went from loving it to making it go back to before it was invented
Man that guy who went to Chinese restaurant must be his bad day lol
Seriously? It’s unnecessary if the Chinese sauces are good. MSG gives we very bad migraines and I’m not normally a migraine sufferer. Totally not needed in Chinese cooking.
"fda cinsiders it safe"... They're not exactly the most integrous corporation when it comes to health... 💉
Well the rest of the world considers it safe so what’s your point.
It's the same as salt. Sodium chloride is essential to life but overdose of it is harmful to health especially to the blood pressure. MSG is the same it contains Sodium, according to health research Sodium in MSG is more harmful than in salt. The problem is not it's safe or not, but it's how much we take.
The past distant haiyaaaaa is so deafening .
I’ve heard Chinese food syndrome was actually caused by substandard oil or spoiled ingredients used at the time. Now that food safety laws are more strict youre much less likely to get the “syndrome”
No, msg is love, msg is life
I also felt that if the food was good enough then MSG would not be needed.
People should have a choice. Even in can goods.
MSG is the king of flavor and it make shit good
i dont even buy salt in stores anymore, i use MSG in everything,
I dunno man I didn’t know accent was MSG but I noticed every time I used it it made my food taste better but made me sick and made my legs and feet go numb and tingly. I found out it was MSG after I stopped using it.
Could you do a fuller length video on this? Just because the chemical also occurs naturally doesn't mean it's safe, right? I'd love to hear more info.
good thing the fda said its safe i was worried for a bit there😮💨
There you go great stuff dear. ❤
Thanks Randy! 👍💯
If you eat food, you already eat MSG.
In my case some msg brands are safe for me to eat, and some cause me itches & allergies. So far Ajinomoto brand's msg is safe for me; never had an issue with it
It's a good point, not all additives are the same quality
Aji No Moto is the OG of MSG.
As a kid in the 70's we had Accent on the table along with salt n pepper, but today as a 50 something, I exclusively use Aji No Moto
No you can't be allergic. It's just racism.😂 The one that gets my allergies going is chicken fingers. Heart starts pounding.
@@kirktravis5780 Lol I don't need you to validate my health related experience, I'll just refer to the doctor. Thanks
Where can I purchase Ajinomoto in the US?
I always add pinch of msg in my coffee
My eyes swell up with MSG
No you should be afraid of msg 🔫
Bro that’s probably uncle Rogers great grandfather 💀💀
Under what brand can I buy this in America?
MSG was not invented, it was discovered;)
Well, the natural glutamate was discovered, the current MSG is chemically produced and thus invented.
Unfortunately, this racist view on msg still today
It’s mostly made from seaweed, which is pretty much good for you.???
I’m not sure about the modern day MSG they might be using different ingredients ???
Had no idea MSG was a relatively new salt. Wow.
MSG contains less sodium than salt
Do these “no msg” Chinese restaurants have mushroom or tomato on their menu? they use msg lol
Good to know everyone.
@Aika yep like Chinese chicken broth that alr has msg in it so that’s why they are able to claim”no msg”
