Randy, I discovered Made With Lau after my dad, also a Cantonese restaurant chef like yours, passed away at age 90 just as COVID hit, and Mom came to live with me and my husband. I suddenly had to learn how to prepare Cantonese meals for her, which I had never done in my life. I happened upon your channel and couldn't believe how similar your dad's cooking was to my dad's. Many of the dishes you make are the same ones I grew up eating (my folks are from Guangdong, too). Your videos and instruction have been invaluable as I've learned to become a good Cantonese cook. Your dad is a treasure, and he reminds me so much of mine. I can see that you are a good son and how much love there is in your family. It's heartwarming. So proud of all you've accomplished. Congratulations to you and your family!

I’m crying. As a second generation CBC (Canadian born Chinese) of toisonese heritage, I love you all for making this channel because it’s helping me connect to my heritage. My family immigrated to Canada in 1921. My parents were born in Canada. I grew up learning French because my parents thought it’d give me the best advantage. By virtue of my upbringing, I fear I’ve lost our culture. This channel has give me so much (beyond cooking). I’ve learned to cook on my own and with my mom. Making joong is now an annual event for my mom and I. Thank you and sending much love. Congrats on the well deserved awards.

Hope you realise people like yourself have brought so much joy to us too, as we all love Chinese food in the UK and I know my Nepali Gurkha friends who have been all over the world love it too. Its because of this amazing food that at the age of 49 I have never been out of the UK so had a few weeks in Nepal. It was amazing and its all because of Asian food I ended up there and can now speak some Nepali. Tomorrow I am going to a Nepali party in the UK in London, i'm not worried that its not my community and that they do not know me I know enough Nepali to get on and they will be happy I can speak some.
I did for many years wanted to learn to speak Chinese but so many types and also no opportunity to spend time with them only speak that language.
We don't realise it but people from that area of the world brought us some great things, things we would miss if they were not here.

We lost both of our parents in these past few years and I started watching your videos because your dad reminded me of mine. When we immigrated to Canada, he went to work in a Chinese restaurant and became a cook. Now that he and my mom are gone, watching your videos and listening to Cantonese is a way of keeping them alive in my heart. You never know how much you miss a home cooked meal, or having someone save you some food cause you were busy or just hearing their voices. Through your work, I get to keep a little bit of them and our culture alive. Thank you. P.s. I will be buying your book.

In reading these comments, I'm struck by how similar many of our stories are: Immigrant parents sacrificing for their kids, dads working at Chinese restaurants while cooking amazing food for us at home, parents passing away before they could share their culinary skills, us yearning to reconnect with our parents and culture through Cantonese cooking. This shared experience and community, brought together by Made With Lau, touches my heart. Thank you Lau family, and especially Daddy Lau (who reminds me of my late dad -- his Cantonese speaking, his skills, his humor, his joy with his grandkids), for enriching our lives far beyond cooking.

Mr. Lau has not only taught us, in a kind and gentle fashion, the simplicity and beauty of Asian cooking, but also the most important worldly cultural lesson. That in the end, a good and blessed life consists of being together with those we love, sharing ample good food, conversation and laughter.

Girlfriend, you and I are both the same age. BTW, It's a great year to be born in the lunar calendar. We enjoy our food and we love life. The only difference is, we don't have the same amount of melanin in our skin. I am of Asian descent but that doesn't make me any more akin to this family. We both felt the love from this strong family bond. If the roles were reversed and the family was black, I would still feel strong emotions and even cry like Randy did while watching this on a computer screen. We all made an invisible connection that is spiritual, it has nothing to do with skin color. The Beatles sang it best, "Can't Buy Me Love."
      Much respect and love.

At the end of the seventies my dad emigrated from HK to Germany and took my mother with him. He opened his own restaurant where he was a chef. In the meantime my mother gave birth to me. My dad was always very busy. One day he started complaining about pain in the chest. Two weeks later he passed from lung cancer. I was 5 years old back then, but still miss him today, almost 40 years later.
Daddy Lau has become the gateway to my own dad. When I cook along to your videos, listening to the Cantonese instructions and imagine my dad laughing at me because I'm so ridiculously proud about creating wok-hei on the camping burner, I feel closer to him.
Never lose that strong bond your family has.
I'm looking forward to the cookbook. It would be nice if you could include 2 or 3 recipes from Chinese holidays (that are not the lunar new year) with an explanation of the holiday.

We need to pass on how to cook these foods, how to speak the language and how to continue the traditions. Cooking with Lau is helping to preserve the culture, and I love it. It's been fun to see this channel grow and now receiving two awards. Tremendously deserving of the awards. Congrats!

Seeing your parents so proud and parading those medals around reminded me so much of my maternal grandmother. She was a community leader in downtown Chinatown Toronto with helping to set up Chinese centric programs at the local community center and even helped build a local flower garden park just up the street from her home. Half of Chinatown knew her, and by extension, us. One of her accolades was a community leadership award given by our then govoner general of Canada. She had the award certificate, and the photo of her receiving it all framed up and hung center stage at home.
I found your channel during lockdown, looking up references to recapture that same grandmother's recipes. Not much of what she knew was passed down to my mother or my uncles. With so much time on my hands, I took it upon myself to relearn some of those unwritten and forgotten recipes. Even in other Facebook groups I joined for additional resources, those members would recommend this channel 7/10 times. Your reach is incalculable.
Live it up. This is your moment.

I play Chinese flutes for a US food bank that has a Chinese clientele. When my songs were getting old and tired I asked "Old Man Lau" (how he signed his name) for song suggestions. He made two recommendations and I play both songs several times each week. I asked him because he is a Chinese flute player and he is accessible. It was the first letter I'd ever tried to write in Chinese and I was very proud of his kind response. Seeing your father recognized at the White House is very satisfying to me.

Congratulations on your family’s recognition. You do not realize how much impact your channel has to someone like me. Like you, my dad also immigrated from Hong Kong, leaving a professional career, to provide a better life for his family and opened up a Chinese restaurant. He was a phenomenal cook, just like your father, and many of your dad’s recipes remind me of my dad’s. He passed away 5 years ago and I regret I was not able to learn his recipes and techniques. Thank you for creating this channel and sharing your family’s recipes to the world.
Congrats again to the Lau family, well deserved!

Hi Randy, I found your channel during the pandemic when i was looking to cook more with my time indoors. I'm an American-born Cantonese and lost both my parents in my 20's. Your channel has really resonated with me these past years. The recipes, listening to Daddy Lau's Cantonese, the food and culture. It makes me feel like I'm back at home with my family, even though it has been a decade since my dad passed away. Thank you for the comfort food and the nostalgia.
I'm sure you see all the support here in the comments but know that what you're doing is having a butterfly effect on many people and their networks. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to more. 🎉

This is by far my most favorite cooking show. The Laus made it so easy for people to learn how to cook Chinese food with a little American/Hong Kong twist. The recipes and techniques are so simple and straight forward, nothing fancy and complicated. Also, the elder Laus are the quintessential Chinese immigrant parents who examplified the older generation of Chinese parents who sacrifieced so much of their life in order to giver their children a better life in America. Congrats for the success of the show and Happy Family (with a new member!)!

Randy, you have no idea how much joy you and your family bring to the world. Yes, it's about the recipes, and you've made this old Jewish lady a much better Cantonese cook. But it's also about being able to witness your loving family and watching your children grow. You have a lovely family and the privilege is ours because you've chosen to share them with us. All the best always to you, your parents, Kat, Cam, Maya, Juju, and all the Made With Lau team. Thank you.

My grandpa and grandma used to make the most amazing food for us while I was growing up. We could never figure out how he cooked food that amazing, and he never wanted to share or have us watch him so we could learn. Unfortunately, so much of what he did passed with him.
Your channel has given me the ability to at least pursue some of what he was able to do and how he showed us love.
Thank you for giving that to me and my family, and congrats on all the achievements. Best wishes to the next chapter!

When it comes to Chinese food, so many of the new restaurants are Szechuan, and the access to Cantonese restaurants are shrinking. So it’s very meaningful to preserve Cantonese recipes in an accessible way. The same could be said for Teo Chow recipes and other regional variations that are not spice forward. Thank you for doing this.

Flushing is almost only 福卅Foo Chow cuisine replacing HK Cantonese cuisine (owner retirement). Also, reflects the dichotomy of latest immigrant trend. For authentic Cantonese HK cuisine: Vancouver, Canada. Fast food style and banquet style. And anything in between. Due to their immigrant policy.

Thank you, Randy, for crafting your show with all your translations and explanations. You make our Chinese culture accessible and worthy of the respect it deserves. I have served my family many of your recipes. Even though my family ate Northern Chinese food when I was growing up, my mother-in-law was from Toishan and cooked delicious food. Sadly, no one in my husband's family learned to cook from their mom, and her craft was lost. I am so glad you preserve an art that has been passed on for thousands of years. You and your family deserve the accolades you received for your hard work. I cried when I saw your video because you brought us along on your journey. Bravo!

Somehow watching your videos helped to make me realize what love for our parents can look like. I always had a very strained relationship with my dad. But now I know. just making a heart warming meal with the familiar old Cantonese taste is all it takes to bring the family closer. Randy, I know there are a lot of food channels out there, but I was so happy to find yours because there is a warmth and authenticity that I sometimes struggle to find from others. I bawled watching you get recognised at the JBA and I hope your parents realise what a great honour it is! Analytics are important especially when you have to worry about paying the bills for a bunch of people, but definitely don’t forget how many people have watched your videos, tried your recipes, subscribe to the channel. I think social media sometimes dulls our perception of numbers because we keep seeing growth and forgetting the people that you’ve already inspired. Can’t wait to see what’s next!

"I feel like I know you guys!" That statement best describes how I feel. The way you guys have presented your videos, always makes me feel like I'm learning from the nurturing instructions of a family member. The spot-on recipes have enriched my repertoire, and somehow helped me grasp Cantonese cuisine. As someone who always wants to know the background to things, the perspectives always help (like how char siew is done in some restaurants, and why). And for all those low days when everything felt so daunting or impossible, watching your dad cook and teach is therapeutic. Thank you so much Lau Family, for you all deserved the wins! Put aside the numbers when you can, and smile, knowing that many years from now, the culinary legacy of this channel will still live on in many kitchens.

During the time of my dad's illness, he cannot cook for himself anymore, through straining myself remembering recipes my dad has also once taught me, led me to discover your channel. I took comfort and watched the videos even when I was not cooking/researching recipes, but because Lau reminded me of my dad but much kinder. This helped me cook for my dad where he will eat according to his preference. Your contribution to the food world is much needed, not to continue generational recipes, but also the ease and accessibility you bring so phenomenally well, should be the standard.
