Thanks for that. I used to rely heavily in Fabiana's AlterGlow light, not knowing the simple way to create ghostlights. Guess the hammer will work there, too. Ah, and thanks to the Iray/Daz nerds fixing what was not broken at all!
Thank you so much for this, I finally upgraded to 4.2 from the required update to use 8.1, wanted to try 9 and play with the new volumetric stuff and suddenly my lights were broken, so I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling thinking it was me... glad it wasn't. Ta!
Glad to help out Allie .. but you'll be happy to know that in the next Daz version which is currently in Beta there's been a fix for the fix which fixed (broke!) ghost lights .. So, this video will probably be obsolete when the Beta changes to the live version of Daz!
Ok so first off, I do sincerely want to say thank you for making this. All things considered, this was the exact fix that I was looking for & I sincerely do appreciate it. That said, I do want to provide some constructive feedback as well. While I appreciate your skill with DAZ, You REALLY need to consider scripting these videos out ahead of time. Again, I do want to reiterate, they are genuinely appreciated. But keep in mind, Often when people are looking this up, it's not when they are sitting down, relaxing & looking for entertainment or to just spend all day doing research, most of the time, they are people on a deadline, whom are trying to get their project done within a certain time budget & have likely already really frustrated, having spent a ton of time trying to figure out the problem. So what they want is "What is the fix, so that I can move on with this?" The thing is, the actual data that most people watching are looking for is maybe 20 to 30 seconds of this video. Now I do understand that some context is needed to cover, but that can be done in maybe 2 minutes tops, which still leaves 4 minutes minimum of unneeded exposition & rambling. Now granted, it's only 4 minutes in this video, but keep in mind, that's about 60% of the video runtime at minimum to 93%, (as only 20 to 30 seconds of it actually covered what most people came for). & keeping in mind that many of your viewers are stressed out, frazzled people that just want a fix want it yesterday, You want to keep it short, sweet & to the point, not long & drawn out with a bunch of yadda yadda yadda that's just going to stress them out more. Again, regardless, either way, it's still wholeheartedly appreciated, it really is. Just please keep this in mind, script it out, & tighten it up.
I appreciate your comments - but you have to remember that a lot of people are beginners or just starting out. They don't know what I know or you know. They don't know the terminology or the history behind things in Daz. Sometimes, they don't even know the problem exists. People need context. If I was just making videos for people who've used Daz for x number of years - they're would be very few videos on the channel. Most of my videos are time stamped - just jump to the section that you need (I appreciate for some reason this one isn't - but most are). A lot of Daz videos you'll find online are longer than mine and aren't timestamped. Try finding what you need in those. I keep mine as short as possible and put time stamps on them when I remember. If that's still too much for you .. then it's too much. I'm not making videos for 1 particular set of people. I'm making them for people across the board : complete beginners who know nothing about Daz and people who've used Daz for years and who might pick up the odd thing they might have missed. If that means I need to make a .. 6 minute .. video covering the topic that somebody who knows a lot about Daz isn't interested in and who has to skip through it, then I'll do that to make sure I help the one person who knows nothing about Daz. So like I say - I appreciate the comments but I'm making videos for a wide range of people ..
Install youtube enhancer and easily speed up videos to get to through them or get to the relevant portion faster. Much better than asking for less beginner friendly content :)
I had two separate scenes that i created that were ruined after the update i did not realise it was the ghost lights since i always use them so thank you Rauko
brilliant, I hit the panic mode full on after updating, still sucks my old files with ghost lights that need fixes but glad I got a solution for the next work I do in daz. thank you
Yeah, sadly, all old scene will need to be changed if and when you go back to them .. but as you say .. anything new .. get the hammer out and crank up the lumens!
Another great informative video! I would love to see you do another one on setting up a scene and render..one of those longer ones , that way I can make a pot of coffee.
The thing about ghost lighting is that render times are much faster using them than the daz provided lights. I don't know why but for that reason I always use them.
I might have to test that .. it could be that ghost lights are generally larger in surface area so more light is going into the scene from a wider area thereby lighting things up quickly! Maybe .. 😀
Thanks for finally arriving! I hope you enjoy your stay! .. There's no real animation tutorials just yet as I haven't done much animation over the years (though I am now doing more) .. the animation at the beginning was just a simple walk animation I got off the Daz Store. I will be touching on Animation soon though!
How would this type of light be different from creating a point light, setting it to a rectangle and turning off "Render emitter"? I've had problems with too much noise from emissive lights that go too high on the Luminous Flux number.
To be honest - i never use ghost lights. My guess is too many people overuse them or use them in the incorrect way. The alternative that you suggest is usually one of my own preferred methods. You have to remember that ghost lights were an unintended "feature" of Iray. I personally don't understand peoples obsession with them 😀
Funny - I'm just putting a video together on that .. Simple : Render settings .. Filtering .. Firefly Filter Enable = "On" .. Noise Degrain Filtering +1 ...... But still watch and like the video when it drops!! 😀
@@RaukoDaz3D I'm in 4.21 and not getting Noise Degrain Filtering as an option. I do have Post Denoiser Option I can toggle to "On" that gives me three additional options, "Post Denoiser Enable" (On/Off), Post Denoiser Start Iteration "8" and "Post Denoiser Denoise Alpha". Thank you for responding very kind of you! Any ideas?
Sounds like it's set as a hidden property for you ... hopefully i can describe how to show it without need of the video that I'm doing! With the "Filtering" sub menu open (where you can enable Firefly Filtering) .. go to the menu (an icon with 4 lines on top of each other with a little arrow next to them) it should be next to the Render button. Click it .. then go Preferences > Show Hidden Properties You should now see a greyed out "Noise Degrain Filter" slider .. it should be useable .. but to make it permantly visible .. go to the cog icon on the slider .. select "Parameter Settings" and then in the window that opens .. deselect "Hidden" .. and hit "Accept" Now just slide it up to 1 to get rid of the fireflies ..
@@RaukoDaz3D OMG YES! That did it! You are a genius! I will for sure like the video and once posted direct other game developers to the video! Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to help me!
Hey Strenif - there's no real difference really - just have to do different things to get the same result .. so for instance .. with a point light you can check the "Render Emitter" option to make it invisible in scene .. much easier and quicker and the method I use instead of using ghost lights .. but a lot of people still use them and they had been "broken"
A ghost light is effectively invisible so that it can't be seen in the camera viewport at render time but it still emits the same levels of light. They are used to add a form of ambient lighting to a scene .. so, if you want to light a large room before focussing on lighting your model, strategically place some ghost lights around the room to add the ambience you're looking for.
Hey David - everything that's done within a Daz scene will effect render time to one degree or another whether for the good or the bad. However, there shouldn't be any great change when using ghost lights.
Ghost lights are not lights that's recognized by Iray or Daz. Iray somehow understands what you are trying to do but it doesn't know how to calculate while you are using ghost lights. So be careful using ghost lights and make sure your shadows don't turn out weird.
Insane that it's even necessary. Nearly every other 3D software includes specific ghost light options. Daz is great but this really shows just how far behind the others it is.
Agree - but you'll be glad to hear that ghost lights are officially supported in the new Beta that was released a few days back and will be in the live version soon and so this fix won't be needed then!
Any possibility that you (or anybody else) has had trouble with saving your layout in 4.20? Sorry if it's off topic... lots of people on forum having problems but no one really addressing it.
Hey dag .. I've had somebody ask me the same thing on Twitter .. but .. so far, I haven't ran into the problem myself yet and the solution I offered didn't seem to fix it .. So for now - I can't help with it!
You're probably right .. while Volumetrics are fine - unless you're needing to do foggy renders every single time you render something they aren't a reason alone to upgrade to 4.2 .. While making ghost lights work like they used to is a fairly simple thing - there's no point in upgrading for the sake of it
Why would you call it a DAZ FIX? 🤔 Nearly all my work involves Mesh lights, and now I have to change hundreds of Mesh lights to get my work back!!! Daz being Daz as usual. 🤬🤬
