What an electric night in the theater! Rarely does a follow up to a blockbuster musical like Les Miz come out and make history of its own. I adore this score and still applaud the creatives for finding a way to tell a very difficult story with the proper humanity and honesty it deserves. Thank you so much for posting this Spiderwoman!!!
Thanks for posting this. Emotional for me to hear as I’m playing the piano/keyboard book. Hard to believe we opened 30 years ago. Amazing memories from that time. We were so young. 😉
Bravo Maestro Calandra! You were part of musical magic. I saw the show 7 times, twice in NYC with this cast.. Willy was for me the best Chris. Lea was an instant and permanent star and Pryce was magnificent.
What a show! What a score! What a cast! I've never seen this show, but still it is one of my favorite shows! (also, it's really sad that there's no cast album of the original Broadway cast)
What I would give to be able to sit down in TR Drury Lane and watch this original production again. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if CM released this old footage in full length just for the fans of the brilliant original?
So it was Hinton Battle turned Bui Doi into the showing-off vocal-gymnastics version which is almost universal today. A far cry from the the original and wonderful Peter Polycarpou version: a man suffering, not showing off.
you know maybe it’s just that i’ve only now become cognizant of the conversations being put at the forefront but........ i can see where the discomfort comes from
These clips feature the original Broadway cast, and Simon Bowman was not in the Broadway production. You can see him and the original London cast at ua-cam.com/video/JOJCgegMcUg/v-deo.html
London/Original was better: choreography, arrangement. It lacked the US background like flags or red white and blue colors. Some sets are too dark. I don’t know if there were moving sets which the musical was famous for.
My thinking is that Jonathan Pryce was brought on board as an established “name” actor with a draw for the West End opening. The large Asian contingent was a big financial risk with unknown actors for the British crowd. The gargantuan talent seen on stage at opening and the completely brilliant production made the show an instant sellout, but even Cameron McIntosh has to cover some practical bases.
@@jimashburn5606 I feel like if they needed a famous name, they could've casted a famous actor as an american, no? I feel it fully breaks the immersion
@Tessa Blandin You may be right; however both Salonga and Pryce won Tony Awards for their respective performances. Some have observed changes were made to songs, story line and actors over time. Another issue in the move from London was that Lea Salonga wasn’t a member of Equity. An attempt to force her replacement resulted in Cameron Macintosh’ threat to cancel the show. Certainly that was a justifiable response as it is universally acknowledged 30+ years laterthat she is nonpareil in this role.
Well, the character is supposed to be half-white (French). I think he was written that way to symbolize the historical conflict between France and Vietnam.
Over 30 years have passed yet I still get covered with goosebumps watching these clips from this masterpiece.
Lea Salonga has PERFECT vocal placement.

Lea Salonga’s voice sends chills down my spine. Always. 😍

I saw this cast in September of 1991. Seems like yesterday- what a fabulous production.
her (Lea) dance was on 🔥🔥
What a show! What a score! What a cast!

There is in Apple store.
@@CVWE1029 really? 😍😍
There's no original Broadway cast on Spotify 😭😭😭
Extraordinaire.
Congratulations !!!

Thank you for posting this. There are very few footages of the original Broadway cast of Miss Saigon out there.
And very rare footage of Liz Callaway! If only there had been a recording!
What I would give to be able to sit down in TR Drury Lane and watch this original production again. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if CM released this old footage in full length just for the fans of the brilliant original?
30 years ago?!?!?!?
Say it ain't so....lololol
Thanks so much for this!
love Miss Saigon. Love Lea.
AHHHH I FORGOT LIZ CALLAWAY WAS THE ORIGINAL ELLEN ON BROADWAY!
Know it’s before but can hear shades of her Eponine since Lea’s voice is developing into what we know it as it is now
We want more!!!!
Amazing, thank you so much!

RIP Hinton Battle…😢
My friend David G. Weiss played the flute 8 shows per week during its original Broadway run. Google his UA-cam channel.
I have seen in London,Theater Drury Lane,in 1980s with the same cast.
I’m surprised Jonathan Price hasn’t changed much.
And Jonathan Pryce is so perfect as the Engineer.
That should be an Asian..I think the guy whose surname Valdez is the best Engineer although Jonathan is the 1st engineer
@@blessed2976I think the character is half asian, half caucasian so could be either?

seriously...
I Love this very BIG. Cause ELLEN is Liz CaLLaway, who is the singing voice of Anastasia !!

👍
Aurora Spiderwoman, was that Billy Porter in the chorus?
Yes, and he was billed as "W. Ellis Porter," playing a Marine. Nine years after the opening, he took over the role of John.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886you are correct. I saw Billy Porter as John too.
04:34 lol
…but… Simon Bowman was the original Chris… this footage isn’t him. 😔

@@auroraspiderwoman5886 oh whoops! You’re absolutely right and I see my error - my apologies, I stand corrected… and thank you! 😊
No worries :)
Do you have full show?
Hello, did you ever find the full show? Where can I buy this original cast?
London/Original was better: choreography, arrangement. It lacked the US background like flags or red white and blue colors. Some sets are too dark. I don’t know if there were moving sets which the musical was famous for.
Why the heck is the engineer white lol
This completely ruins the character, what was the point of doing that?

the plot is humiliating to Asians women
How do you see it in the perspective of the collective? It is based on the Character Kim's perspective during the Vietnam war. Don't loose the context
Nah, we just live in a politically correct society that needs everybody to be victimized, life was always this grim.
They moved Madame Butterfly from 1900s Japan to 1970s Vietnam.
