  • I can't say enough for the 'Jim Wilson' fig in my growing zone and area. It's a sweet honey fig with a slight berry flavor and I love it. When fully ripe, it's one of my top figs for my zone and growing climate. I'll definitely be planting this one out on the property.

Mike it is really good to see your fig orchard starting to produce. I have been growing figs in Pendleton, zone 7b, outside in the ground for years. They survive nicely, but don't produce figs. I have been very successful growing figs in self-watering pots and getting great production. I bring them into unheated space after they are fully dormant and then bring them out in the spring after hard frosts. I have 14 fig plants in a 25 x 8 foot space on my driveway. I am also getting awesome results from a hydroponically grown Petite Negri fig. I have over a 100 figs on that plant and it is by far the most productive fig I have. I would be glad to share information with you or anybody else that is interested.

Yes, please! I need all the help I can get. I'm actually thinking about culling the herd and getting rid of some of these varieties that don't produce. I'll look into Petite Negri, as I don't have one yet. Good to know it does well for you there in 7b. Are you referring to Pendleton, Oregon? If so, we passed through there and stayed the night on our way back from Arizona last year. I loved the Blue Mountains.

For whatever reason I am still single at 45 years of age & I am going a couple of fig trees which are a striped tiger or "Panache" fig which are a couple of the rarest fig trees in the world.
They were only cuttings about 1 year ago but now they're 2-3 feet tall albeit dormant since we come into spring in a fortnights time over here in Australia.
I have recently purchased a couple of black mission fig cuttings which are meant to grow the sweetest figs,I would also like to get a dehydrator so I can snack on them instead of eating biscuits.
I have bought a fig from my local supermarket which tasted kind of like a guava.
Yes,I haven't been able to get onto your form of daughters who aren't even the same as yours in Australia because they aren't knowing that I grow fig trees & other fruit trees, maybe I didn't get onto them whose a Schmidt or a Quaid or something, they don't like me !

I love dried figs and would like to dry my own here eventually. Many Canadians keep figs in pots in a garage through the winter and bring them out in the spring. You should be able to get some fresh figs that way. I keep hearing about a tropical storm but it's been so hot and dry here all summer and we haven't seen any rain really to speak of. the forecast shows nothing but sun for another month so I guess we're safe from the storm.

Do these figs have wasps? My grandma had a huge fig tree beside her house that had so many we couldn't keep up with them. We used to climb up in it and just pick and eat. It was one of the most heavenly experiences and remains one of my most favorite fruits.
It freaked me out to learn later in life they might have had digested wasps in them (don't know what kind hers was).

We don't have the fig wasp this far north. That's why it's a good idea to have breba producing varieties in my area. And you're right, they are such an awesome fruit and tree.

Fires in Cali and to the north of us didn't help. Everything stopped growing after summer began. Rain is a good fertilizer but it's been dry yet, just a few showers while Cali hogs it all from Hilary. ! Even the cactus didn't make a lot of fruit. Bummer.

Oh Man too bad you don't have the name of that fig, looks so good, let us know when and if you are going to sell some of those , my fig tree is big , about 20 feet h , like 15 years old , forgot the name but is all green and the inside pink / reddish , smell sooo good but is not sweet enough :( and I get tons of them, every year produce about 800 +, this yea a little less cus I cut some branches last year and he didn't like it so much.
ahh I forgot, I live near, Hello from Tacoma and looking for another fig tree for this crazy zone we have..:)
I hear the celeste was good for this area but no so sure any advice? beside that one which one do you think is the best for here the NW?

My Takoma Violet is really starting to do well and I'm looking forward to that one too. Lattarula is a nice honey fig for our area. There are many more, just start collecting!

There isn’t anything online. It’s a really old fig tree that I got cuttings from across the street from me on a 40 acre homestead. I affectionately named it Jim Wilson, after an old friend in his 70s who grew up on the property and watched his parents plant it when he was young.

Does your wife not like figs? I love that you include your daughters in a lot of your videos but the wife seems to always be missing. I have seen a couple of her videos so I don’t think it is a shyness problem. I am not trying to be overly personal and yeah it is none of my business but im just always curious when you do a family tasting video like this or the video where you guys went hiking and so on why it is never the “whole” family

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  10 місяців тому +1

I guess it does seem odd, without an explanation. The day we went hiking, my wife was working. The video was a spur of the moment thought once we got there and I’m glad I filmed it cause it’s good memories. As far as the figs, Shellie isn’t into them. I’ve tried to get her to eat them, and she has tried them a couple times, but she doesn’t like sweet things much (oddly enough). She’s pretty strict with her keto diet and feels good on that so I don’t harass her about it. I just eat the figs with the kids.
