  • I was recently asked the question, "How many nodes do I need for rooting Fig Cuttings"? I also see another question running around online all the time, "Why are my fig cutting roots turning brown"? Well, I thought I'd try to answer those fig propagation questions in this video.

    Oh man I'm extremely excited to see that project coming off the ground. I have 9 nice and fat cuttings of a fig I took over at my mothers place a few weeks ago and only just found the time to stick em in some bark. I have them in dixie cups, nice and snug in a plastic tote on the bottom heat in my living room. Your method has worked out great for me last year and am hoping for good results again. Love your videos Mike. Thanks for all the work you put in and sharing it with us. Happy new year, may it be abundant of plant propagation!

    Hi Mike: Sure I would like to see a much information on fig propagation as you can stand to give. I bought s few cuttings last year that are still in my refrigerator. I will start to root them soon. There are many first time 'experts' out there only to see them progress to failures and in the next season they create a whole new "best way to propagate" video. You present with an unpretentious/honest approach and I thank you for that.

      Thanks PaPa! I appreciate the comment. I work hard to be open and honest about all of this so that you can be successful with it. My "best way to propagate figs" is still the video I did last spring on the bottom heat on the back porch. I've also gotten good results just taking a cutting and sticking it in a pot, lol. More videos to come and good luck with your cuttings.

    Merry Christmas to you and your family, Mike. I always enjoy your "fig" videos. Last season, I started using diatomaceous earth (floor dry) as my prefered medium for rooting cuttings indoors. You don't have the problem of fungus gnats in the house, and it's hard to overwater the cuttings when growing them in DE. After the cutting has produced a good root system and good leafy plant, I transplant to a bigger container filled with a good potting soil. I keep the DE with the roots when I transplant. By the way, I start my cuttings in 24 oz. plastic cups. Just make sure when you buy the floor dry that it is diatomaceous earth (DE) and not calcined clay. And, as with when working with perlite, wear a mask when first starting the cuttings in DE.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому

      Merry Christmas, Steve, good to hear from you. I hope you and your family have a nice relaxing day together. Thanks for the tips on the DE. My wife uses it in her chicken coop and I've considered using it on the surface of the fir bark with the fig cuttings. I do get fungus gnats and have been using mosquito bits with good success the past few years, although it doesn't completely eradicate them. Looking forward to doing some more fig videos through the winter and experimenting as I go.

    i have 7 acer dissectum crimson queen cuttings that i got this year, under my lights in a 75+ temp house they are doing great they went dormant and have little green buds on them. now i just have to make sure i keep them watered but not overly.. been having a lot of fun making new plants.. havent wanted to do the big snip on my rhody i have some ground layerings ranging from 1 to 4 years old and a nice sized air layer that i did this year. i packed around it with moss, around the air layering bag, held up on a 8 foot ladders bucket holder... padded with more moss to keep it from getting cold from sitting on aluminum none of the cuttings that i took this year made it. i need to prefect and set up a sticking pod shade area.so many fun things going over this winter that im crossing my fingers and nocking on wood to keep alive....keep up the great videos see you in the next one.

    Hi, Mike, good to see you again. Happy Holidays to you and your lovely family. Stay safe and stay healthy.
    Just recently I propagated my fig tree from cuttings, they were rooted, but I also has some concerns about nodes above the soil because the cutting are pretty short. If I leave few buds left above the soil that means that I have less chance to get new leaf buds and branches. Even though I got new leaf growth, but I still would rather leave a little bit more nodes above the soil to get more chances. Thanks for your nice video and information.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому +1

      In my experience, 95% of the roots come from the very bottom of the cutting, so I think you're doing the right thing but leaving more nodes above the soil as long as you don't let the cutting dry out. Thanks for watching and Happy Holidays!

    • @LAyangfamily
      @LAyangfamily 3 роки тому

      @@MikeKincaid79 Thanks, Mike, you mean if you insert a cutting with a coupe of nodes below the soil, you will get roots of which 95% come from the very bottom of the cutting? That's very interesting. In my experience, I really did not know exactly because all roots tangled together, plus I did not remove the media, but kind of I can got roots from top part, but I am not sure exactly. Anyway, thanks again.

    Awesome video Mike. I have a fig tree on my grandparents place that is probably 80 years old. I want to get some cuttings off it and see if I can get more of this fig variety to grow. By the way, I have no idea what variety it is, lol. I think you mentioned in your video that you take cuttings in the winter. If that's when I need to take the cuttings, do I go ahead at that time and follow your process of getting them to grow roots?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому +1

      The truth is, Shane, that if you just go right now and take 3 or 4 cuttings about 1/2 to 1 inch in diameter and 9 to 12 inches long, stick them in a pot of a good draining medium, and keep them in a shady location and watered, they'll more than likely root for you.

    Mike, I’m in process of running that nodeless cutting experiment. I’m 3 weeks in and I’ve got a lot of roots. Now just waiting to see if it can generate a node/leaves. If you ran this experiment, what results did you get? Did you ever get a nodeless cutting to grow leaves?
    You are right that if the cuttings are small there won’t be as much energy to grow roots, etc. I got lucky and picked a very vigorous one for this experiment.

  • @jeremybyington
    @jeremybyington 3 роки тому

    I started a few dozen a couple months ago. I used a 50:50 mix of potting soil / garden soil. My results were great at first. Many of them rooted. Now, I have them sitting in front of a huge window in my basement where they can get up to 80 degrees when it is 30 degrees outside. Some of them started wilting after having a few large leaves. I had an infestation of gnats and so I dumped one cutting upside down only to find out the roots had rotted off of the cutting and there were gnat larva crawling up inside of cutting through the core. I don’t know if the soil was too moist or if the gnats killed it. Anyway, I carefully repotted everything in a 50:50 mixture of potting soil and perlite and some have rebounded while others continue to shrivel up. So next year I will be using that lighter mix from the start. Another observation that I have is that I had so many Alma cuttings that I decided to cut them down to about 4 nodes each and now my problem is that a good 85% of them survived and are thriving. A couple got wrecked by squirrels that dug up their roots but now even they have recovered and they didn’t mind my more wet, less drainage, original mix. I may just shift my strategy from trying to get the “best tasting” to trying to find varieties that can tolerate poor growing conditions better. At the very least I think Alma would make a good root stock.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому

      Those gnats are a killer and I use mosquito bits with good result. You may want to try something like that. Definitely finding varieties that do better in your area is a plus. Also, the drainage of the medium makes a difference in my opinion. I also get way better results growing them outdoors vs. indoors. Good luck!

    Hi Mike!
    Have seen the most of your videos and got a lot of inspiration, and specially the figs and your beautiful rhododendron.
    I live in Kolmården in Sweden and there is something i wonder.
    I have bought 2 different figs on ebay, black and white madeira and tryed to find some information about them. Do you know if these are dependent
    on the insect Blastophaga psenes to get fruit? We don't have this insect in Sweden, so if we need this it means we can't get fruit on our figs. We didn't know about that when we bought these. What we seen in your videos i belive we have about the same climate and temperature as you have.
    Keep up the good work

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому +1

      No, those varieties are not dependent on insects. All of the varieties I keep here will fruit without insects. I think we do have similar climates so you should be able to grow many of the same plants there.

    I didn't know you were in Washington too. I'll be starting a few fig cuttings again this winter. I think I saw you had stella there? How is that one doing for you? My Stella came from a guy named Steve on the other side of the Cascades, in eastern Washington. It fruited the same year I rooted it. I loved the fig! In my opinion, it's definitely a keeper in our climate. Not sure how productive it will be yet as it's still so young but time will tell.

      Cool! I've had this idea in me head for several years now. I'd love to go over to the 40 acres across the road where the original fig is and cut a huge branch off. I'm talking like 5 or 7 inches in diameter, even thicker if I can find it. Then try to root the thing. Now sure how it would go but it would be fun to try.

  • @MG-tx9yb

    Using fine fir bark looks like it works much better than peat moss or coco coir. I used the tip of my knife and made slits down the cutting. I’m finding out that those slits I made are all starting to rot. If I had just made an angled cut on the bottom and possibly cut a small slab off the side I would be in much better shape and if rot starts you can possibly save them by cutting the bottom off and starting over. I’m not finding rot on the bottom of the cuttings. It’s along the slot and causes all the bark to slip off. These slits combined with wet coco coir is a death sentence. I tried many different mediums and pure perlite or Pumice worked the best for me and got the fastest root growth with the least amount of rot. airflow to the roots seems majorly important. The fine fir bark looks like it works very well. If I can’t find fir bark can I use other barks? Is there any I should avoid?

    • @MikeKincaid79

    Published one hour ago. 3 years ago you grew your fig roots like you show now. With bark supporting outside the cup to stability the cups and for even bottom heat. Then 2 years ago you dispensed with that and didnt have the bark on the out side of the cups. But thats not my comment
    My comment is about this growth spurt thing . I planted plum rootstock i bought from Cummins nursery it a very shaded area maybe some western afternoon sun filtered through the forest trees, and the entire first growing season it hardly grew 3 inches maybe in new stem growth . Last March I checked them and thought maybe I should dig them up to replant in a sunny spot but decided to . Well the hell with it. That is when it decided to start growing. I recheck in about 3 weeks ago and the two root stocks had grown 6 feet at least with 2 vigorous leaders 3 feet up and numerous small laterals 9 to 12 inches long coming off the central leader trunk which increased in diameter 3 fold.
    And I say " what gives? I gave up on them as a lost cause 8 months ago

      I have pretty good loam soil around here with a little dark clay if you go too deep. The only thing we struggle with is rock. I live at the base of Mt. Makes digging a nightmare but if you plant small plants, the roots find their own way through it.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому

      Not sure, but we'll find out soon after this coming winter, lol. It really depends on the fig variety and your climate. I had one survive in a dixie cup through the winter and start growing again but I've also had one die in a 7 gallon pot. The ground is always safer than a pot if both are kept outside in the open. You'll have to do some experimenting in your area. Plenty of mulch will help get them through the first couple winters and that's one of the reasons I put all the hay around them in the new orchard. I live in zone 8b, if that helps, and I've kept them in the hoophouse and out in the snow and rain and 99% of them survive either way.

    Why my fig cuttings root stop growing and the root become brown and die ?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому

      One word 'instability'. I believe that figs are fragile in the beginning when grown indoors. They seem robust and grow the initial roots like crazy but then they go through a dormancy period after their first push of growth. It's at that time that we think something is wrong and then pump them full of water and fertilizer. I think we need to water less and stop fertilizing after this first push of growth. Wait until the fig is triggered to grow again and then begin watering and fertilizing. There are things you can do to trigger growth such as light cycle and warmth. You want to trigger those summer conditions. That's all my theory anyway. By the way, I struggle with the same issues and am currently working on this as a solution. I don't think it's the medium we use for rooting but the aftercare of the rooted cutting.
