Congratulations on the book sales! When the video opened the seas were rough, unbelievable how it changed. You fish with a great group of guys who are supportive of each other.
Congrats on the book sales thats pretty cool.....laughed my ass off throwing your bucktail over board.too funny..Glad Im not the only one that does that kind of stuff,Occasionaly
"A little nautical" is the best way I've ever heard sloppy weather described. My old fishin' buddy used to say "rough as a cobb" when it got sporty out in the Gulf Of Mexico. Your fluke/flounder bite on some crazy colors. I always liked more natural colors in FL, but maybe that was a mistake. Most of mine came from natural bait and the biggest ate a whole ballyhoo 9 miles out in 45' of water on an artificial reef. If you want to catch flounder in FL try around artificial reefs in the cooler months, they can get thick at times. Yours up north are bigger on average but that's the best place to find numbers in the winter.
I just ordered myself a copy John...ill have to have you sign it the next time i see you like my last one ...Really looking forward to reading it John !!
Hey John. Recently going out on the party boats has called for mimimum 8 oz lead. Sooooo what i do is I tie a Thundermist T swivel rated 50 lb in between my main line and rig. I still have a surgeons loop at the end of the rig to change out bucktails easier and the dropper loop 10-12" above that for the teaser. However, if I need to go heavier with the lead I simply attach a snap hook to the bottom of the T swivel, remove the bucktail at the end of the rig and replace it with another grub. Super easy and quick when you gotta go heavier to stay on the bottom. I never have to retie anything and I notice the T-swivels don't tangle near as much as the standard 3-way swivels.
Any reason for limited trips on your aluminum boat fluking? Perhaps a throw back to before you were going on the big boats chasing ocean fluke? Or are these fluke not reachable in the smaller boat? Great content as always sir!
Coming back east to the Jersey shore in mid July. Going to be fishing for fluke in the back waters of Avalon, Stoneharbor and Sea Isle city. Looking for set up and Gulp suggestions for fishing those backwaters when they’re only 15 to 20 feet deep.
By boat, a 7 foot medium action rod with a 2500 spinning reel and 10-15 lb braid. On land I like to use an 8 foot medium action rod for extra casting and more control. Bucktails in the 1/2 to 1 1/2 oz range.
John... losing a good piece of tackle overboard is good luck. Drop your phone or keys overboard and the fish gods will reward your sacrifice with a trophy.
I've actually got a couple questions for you, Mr Skinner. I've actually pitted your original blank against a lot of different rods. Not a scientific report at all.
Hi John, I saw a grumman 5.0 just like yours with a 2005 90hp mercury outboard for sale in my area. Also in my area was an 87 fisher sv 18cc with the original 70hp Johnson. Both have only been used in fresh water use only. Do you have a preference or any any suggestions on what may be the better choice for similar long island sound trips like you make? I like the fact that the fisher has a all aluminum floor but I like the larger beam of the grumman. Thoughts?
Wow! I had to travel a long way to get my Grumman. I know nothing about the Fisher, but I love the Grumman. It's very wide and deep for the length and is very stable. It does pound a little in waves.
Great video and book Quick question …I know you like the Tsunami glass minnow, is that what you are using in this video on top hook ? It looks a bit different that’s why I ask
Missing your surf fishing videos. A lot of guys here in nj have been doing very well with "bugs" for stripers when nothing else seems to be working. Have you ever fished bugs from the surf?
Other than occasional live eels, I really don't bait fish stripers. I get how bass would like those things and it might be fun in summer weather with light tackle.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I don't tend to bait fish any fish too much unwanted bycatch for my liking still would like to see more surf fishing videos though
Mr. Skinner, do you think vertical jigging while drifting would work in NE Florida fisheries? I don't think I've ever seen anyone using this technique in the St Johns.
John what is your deciding factor on color of jig and the color gulp to go with that jig? Also do you have a favorite combo of jig/gulp combo? Thanks for all the videos and tips
Hey john, just bought your book I’m out of eastern ct learning how to fluke fish. Any advice for depths or finding fluke? I’ve tried a couple times this year and only had a few short fluke
Sorry, the only places I know of are by Millstone and a place called Isabellas off Fishers. You should check with a good local tackle shop. They will be the local experts.
It is 6'8'', which I find ideal for rapid vertical jigging, yet still great for slower jigging. That rod is also what I use in Plum Gut with 6-ounce flutter spoons and 8-10-ounce 3-way rigs for stripers.
Always been a fan of your videos but not cool how you just cut the fishes guilles without putting it out first specially for making video content not cool. Take the extra 5 seconds and do the right thing.
What do you do exactly? Most people I know just put the fish in the cooler. At least I do bleed them out so that they die fast and we preserve the meat. I've never seen anyone club a fluke, or do anything else to "put it out".
Nice to see Doc out with you Mr. Skinner hope he's on the road to a full recovery.
Been out with him 3 days in a row. He's doing great!
We all love and appreciate what you do, Mr Skinner. Keep it up.
Great video. The banter on the boat takes me back. Rick was on fire!!
I'm glad you get the banter. It's frustrating to me that some people misinterpret it so badly and get the wrong impressions about our interactions.
Congratulations on the book sales! When the video opened the seas were rough, unbelievable how it changed. You fish with a great group of guys who are supportive of each other.
That's a great bunch that I'm lucky to fish with.
Love fun love fish love the joking around makes a great Day on the Water.. stay safe guys
Enjoy all your videos but especially your Metal Shark trips. Nice to see Doc back out on water. Wish him all the best of health.
I just fished with Doc three days in a row. He's doing great!
@@JohnSkinnerFishing That's good thank God.

I've thrown a couple bucktails overboard like that. The best one was the one I had just borrowed from my buddy.
Great video I'm always learning from your content especially being new to fishing...looking forward to reading this new book

Y'all eating good tonight!

I’ve done the same thing , once.
Three of four salmon streamers on a long leader. Forgot to tie the leader on the main line. Lol
Just caught my best fluke last night 🫡😄😄
Night fluking?? That sounds interesting
Congrats!
Shhhhh come on man dont say a word.
Congrats!
Great fishing! Good sizes too 🙂
18:53 There’s gotta be about about 100 bucks worth of gulp in that bucket!
Nice to know people are still reading books, congrats

Why 8 ounces? What weight braid are you using? We fished 80-100 feet all day with 2-3 ounces today. Nothing thicker than 15# braid is the key.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I always use 15# but sometimes even with 6-8 oz it scopes out way before it reaches bottom
It's tough on a big boat sometimes where you can't just drop down a trolling motor like on this trip.
homie with the jets hat knows whats up
Great fishing.Two nets might help

I'm talking about a fish fry, a buncha fluke that bit just right....

That was awesome 😂 beats the shit out of dropping another rod/reel
You've got that right! I was on that boat again today and we stuffed a rag in that rodholder.

16 1/2 inches for a sea bass. Wow! Here in Jersey it is 12 1/2 inches.
16 1/2" seabass is a heck of a seabass
Which is a major problem. I’m not well educated on it, but it seems like their shouldn’t be that big of a disparity for crossing one state line.
Fish fear Skinner !

Mr. Skinner, do you think vertical jigging while drifting would work in NE Florida fisheries? I don't think I've ever seen anyone using this technique in the St Johns.
I tried it briefly in Captiva Pass and caught small groupers every drift. I need to follow up on that, as it was late in my winter season.
What was that "extra step" you mentioned in the beginning of the video in order to catch fish? Thx
A joke - I forgot to connect the lure to the line before dropping it in the water.
John what is your deciding factor on color of jig and the color gulp to go with that jig? Also do you have a favorite combo of jig/gulp combo? Thanks for all the videos and tips
I always use two different colors to give the fish a choice, and almost always one of those colors is white/glow or pink/shine.
What size were those gulp 6” or 8”
Thanks

Mr Skinner, what kind of pants are those they’re pretty stylish
My slickers are bimini bay, and there's a link in the video description.
Hi John were these fluke caught in the sound or the south shore. Thanks advance
Montauk
Thank you John
Do you strictly tie direct to your bucktails when fluking? I’ve always used a TA clip but am curious if there’s any benefit to tying direct.
I don't use a clip for fluke, but attach with a surgeon's loop.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing should have figured it was a loop knot, I can guess it would impart more action that tying direct.
Not really about the action, but it makes it easy to change jig weights.
I just bought a dark matter rod the 2-6oz rating, what reel do you suggest?
I use a Quantum Accurist. There's a link in the video description. I spool with 15# Berkley X9 line. Thanks for your support and enjoy!
Have you ever tried using blue bucktails?
I mostly use white/glow and vary the gulp color.
what is that extra tip that you mentioned in the beginning? I watched the whole video but you never metioned it
It was sarcasm. Make sure you tie your lure to your line before tossing it in the water.
definitely a solid tip😂
The tip is that you need to throw a few bucktails overboard when you get to your fishing spot. The bucktails act like chum, they’ll attract the fish
just try to purchase S&S Bucktails John Skinner Swing Hook Fluke Bucktails was told that they are gone out of business
S&S Bucktails went out of business due to a death in the family. There is an effort to make the swing hooks available again.
John, you are human lol
Question: how come the ideal length for your fluke rod is 6 feet or so? I love a 7-7’6” rod
It is 6'8'', which I find ideal for rapid vertical jigging, yet still great for slower jigging. That rod is also what I use in Plum Gut with 6-ounce flutter spoons and 8-10-ounce 3-way rigs for stripers.

Fluke and Bass Rod: bit.ly/3QsR6ch
Fluke Reel: bit.ly/2SDW7Rg
You only use 10lb test out there??
I use 15, some on the boat use 10.
16+ inch sea bass is to much in my opinion. I feel as tho people are killing more fish then killing them to eat them.
did you fart😂 at 18:13
