My parents used to snark at me all the time for going to the bathroom soon after arriving at a new restaraunt, even after I explained this to them (and after three instances of me avoiding getting sick from said restaurant's food simply by not ordering anything). A bathroom is a good reflection of how clean the kitchen is.

As someone who's worked in resteraunts; I hate when the mop head is filthy beyond cleaning, but the managers won't order a new mop head. You can't effectively clean a floor with a dingy greying mop.

The Red Flag about no utensils is interesting. I live in NYC and they passed a law a little while ago that you have to ask for utensils from an eating place, it is to cut down on waste. Even places where you would expect you might need utensils like say Chinese you have to ask or they won’t include it, not because they are being rude or a red flag but so they stay within that new law. Even with online ordering you have to check a box to get utensils and napkins.
Which is something I wish they did here... The online ordering that is. In my country a law recently passed to make restaurants charge extra for disposable cutlery and such and all the online menus just automatically give it, and charge it. With no option to turn it off. I have all the cutlery I need at home. Stop charging me for stuff I don't even want.

As a kid myself, I think the reason kids doing homework in a restaurant means the restaurant is good especially when they have no parent with them is because of their attention spans. Children have always had low attention spans and now with TikTok and UA-cam shorts (Which I do admit I watch way too much of) making them worse. Because of this, when they are waiting for their food, they are gonna want to do something and if they just got out of school a while ago they might still have their homework on them so they might want to do that while they wait. Also, I'm pretty sure kids prefer predictable stuff so if they like a place they will more than likely go there again instead of trying a new place unless they are forced.
One of my friends from childhood worked at a McDonald's in a larger City when he moved out of the area. I have sensory issues, so I'm sensitive to a lot of smells. So walking in a bad smelling or dirty restaurant is hell.. especially ones who reek of cleaning supplies ironically. That smell of Lysol and mop water and spray makes my head hurt.
Me too, I’m sensitive to lights, sounds, and smells myself. Lots of overwhelming smells trigger my head to ache, except for calming ones for me like mint, orange jasmine, lavender, etc. I can also understand not everyone likes lavender.
13:13 I think it’s because most places like that only have that one business and will put their all into it meaning they’re never at home until the end of the day so if you see their kid in the shop doing their homework they’re most likely there until there parents close the shop and go home for the day. What bothers me is when a great franchise goes downhill. For example, Taco Cabana used to be a fast food brand I would seek out, but they somehow went from having some of the best Mexican food to being ridiculously generic and low quality.
Moving from mid to South Texas Taco Cabana basically disappeared while other franchises sprung up like Jason's/Schiloscies. Never saw a big difference in Taco Cabana between our more local (FAST FOOT) Mexican restaurants like El Pato or La Mexicana, in addition to the many local places. Was curious if they're still doing well. (Keep in mind Taco Bell has practically taken over all the TB/Lomg John Silver locations).😊
Another red flag could be when a restaurant says they’re a Mexican restaurant but the people working there are not Mexican. It can apply to any restaurant like that.

I was thrilled to see the "Kitchen Nightmares" clips over your commentary on the menus. I've learned from that show that restaurants must cook fresh and never use microwaves. If you know you can make better than what you order, either the cooks or the owner are doing something wrong. I know that staff would argue, too, but I've never heard people fighting like on the show. I hope I remember to check out the environment around and inside a restaurant next time I check out one I haven't been in.

Agreed 100 percent to the disinterested staff. I remember one time my wife and I went to a Burger King and looked really checked out like they didn't even want to be there. Being a fast-food restaurant, we just cared enough to get our food and go home. Got home and the order was completely wrong. Went back and the same staff member came out to fix the meal. We noticed when they were handling food, they did not wear gloves after they tried to hide their cellphone texting. So, we called the manager and told them to just refund our order because of the lack of health precautions. The manager gave us a refund and I ended up calling the Burger King customer service number to inform them they had a store that had possibly multiple health code violations including what we saw and the problem with the store getting our order wrong experience.

Really though. Was in a Wendy's once and a man who was seemingly Indian based on looks and accent was saying the N word quite a bit. He used the "a" variant, but it was still rather uncomfortable to hear him yelling it jokingly in the kitchen.
My entire family has worked in kitchens and you'd find kitchen nightmares is a lot less dramatized then you'd think they're horrible to work in especially in the northeast
I will say that #6 isn't always true. I work at a restaurant myself, and there isn't one moment where my bosses aren't looking out for all of us. However, most of them complain and regardless, blame them, and become ungrateful for it. It's just unfortunate sometimes. I will say that yes it can be a red flag, but I will say that it isn't always because the restaurant is bad. It CAN mean that, but not always.

I learned from working at a McDonald's and then a Burger King is that the darker your french fries are, the dirtier the fryer oil is. When the oil is cleaned and replaced regularly your fries will be a very light color, if they are darker brown the oil hasnt been filtered or changed in possibly weeks. I went to a carls jr once as i was desperate for food and it was the only thing in that area. I was the only person in the drive thru and the lobby was empty. It took them nearly 30 minutes to get me my food and it was cold overpriced garbage. I only ate it because my blood sugar was very low and my only other option was the mall and i have mobility issues.
I once went to a restaurant and saw a rat the size of a cat run out of the kitchen. I noped the hell right outta there. I should have listened to my friend when she said she got food poisoning last time she went there.
1:37 Not a restaurant, but a ballpark, and we sell food there, so it counts. Our restrooms are normally very clean and orderly, so if, for some reason, the toilet paper is low or the soap dispenser is empty, its probably just the traffic from yesterdays game wiping it out completely, and an usher who cleans the bathroom hasnt looked at the situation yet. As for me, I've become somewhat of an expert in cleaning the condiment carts!
As a guy who works in food service (I work in a coffee shop) a lot of these red flags can be down staff shortage and stress and I personal opinion some customer don’t understand that. Not saying it’s excuse just making a point
I agree with the bathroom rule for all places I go. Even your own home. Even if you are very busy and do not have time to clean the rest of your apartment/house, your bathroom and kitchen should always be clean. Especially when you know someone is coming over and will most likely be using either or both rooms.
My high school culinary teacher taught us that one red flag to a bad restaurant is the quality of its parking lot. Same reason as the bathroom quality, their parking lot is apart of their property so if they don't take care of it, there's a chance they don't take care of the inside either

Regarding high turnover, it also hurts the employee as much as the business because there’s no guarantee that they can find a job in a similar industry. Speaking for myself, I haven’t had steady employment since 2011. All my other jobs were seasonal, temporary, or false starts.
Strider, boy do I got a story for you. Last year, my parents and I went to an Outback Steakhouse (a restaurant you talked about in your Top 10 Most Hated Sit-down Restaurants) near my house and IT WAS HORRIBLE! First off, as you had talked about it in the video, the restaurant was almost empty. Many tables were vacant. Not only that, the waiter that was serving us was beyond abysmal! He was really rude and it seemed like he was on drugs and took AGES to serve us. My parents and I had actually spent time in the car discussing what we thought he was on. The food was gross too. It looked like they had cooked the mustard when they gave me the burger I ordered. Also, another note, when I entered the bathroom, the men's room was SO HOT. This may be an exaggeration but it was like a tanning bed in there! It was absolutely horrible! Luckily, the restaurant ceased operations this year, because it apparently was a common thing for people to have a bad experience there.
"do diners even have lobster" Only maine lobsters are really expencive and hard to come by, the smaller and far more common atlantic lobster is much less expensive whole and can be cheap to buy preprocessed if you can buy it blast frozen in large volumes. So yes, diners can infact have lobster meat in house and serve it, they just have to specify that it's atlantic lobster and that its "fresh frozen" rather than fresh.
The third point is interesting to me right now, because I just went to Seattle over the course of last week, and I actually went to a restaurant that _is_ a tourist attraction in itself. I don't remember what it's called, but it's a seafood restaurant near the coast that has a display where they have the fish put around mounds of ice cubes, and the workers there throw the fish between each other for certain steps of the process; it's been shown on TikTok a lot, I've heard, and when I went there, there was a ton of people filming it too; someone even had an actual large and pretty sophisticated camera filming it, and not just their phone! I'm sure the food is good or at least alright there, and no hate towards the people working there since it's a very unique presentation I enjoyed seeing; the point just reminded me of how I ended up not going there, since I was kind of put off by the fact that they had a crate of crayfish with their limbs still twitching...
Strider, I have a genuine question: why do you still collaborate with Doug (@Nostalgia_Critic)? Like I'm genuinely curious. And, believe me, the last thing I want to do is start a comment war, so I'll keep this brief. But, like, the dude hasn't been funny, in my opinion anyway, many others share that opinion too, though express said opinion in a far less respectful way. He's also just a mouth piece for an incredibly corrupt company, Channel Awesome, with the sites collaborator, Michael Ellis, being described as misogynistic and, for lack of a better word, an incel. I'm certainly not saying Doug is also an incel, but many of his jokes, at times, come across as very misogynistic, like frequent jokes of him distracting himself with beautiful women. Now, I'm certainly not saying you are wrong for collaborating with him, I just wanted to ask you personally, based on your own research and opinion, why you work with Doug.
I worked at a restaurant, once, where one of the waiters was cussing at other employees, and sometimes breaking things on purpose…just always showing up to work in a bad mood. I tried my best to stay away from him

Number 6 is absolutely a cultural thing. I've never in my life seen in any restaurant a cashier greet you when you walk in (even in Subway, as was used as an example in the video). That's just weirdly pushy imo. This is different tho from going to the counter and asking to be seated/ordering food depending on the fanciness of the restaurant, where you're normally greeted. To me, stuff like that falls into the category of stuff you only see in american TV shows and movies, like dedicated greeters at supermarkets, or cashiers wasting time bagging your stuff, weird things like that.
i have to disagree with #4, you have to very careful by going off online reviews. not only can things have taken a drastic change since the latest review, but people can get really salty over minor things and give an unfair review out of sheer pettiness. be sure to read these reviews, but do not treat them like the gospel truth, they are better kept as guidelines rather than facts.

I don't necessarily agree about the reviews. I know for myself if I like a place I simply go back again. I don't bother with the review. My experience working in a fast food place is that the only people who really spend the time to review are typically Karens or people who I recognized from the review and knew they weren't being honest. "Manager wouldn't serve me and called me a liar" type of posts when they walked in with a coupon written in crayon.
There was a restaurant where I live that I loved going to. They had good food and good prices, however behind the scenes there was some trouble including the owner having some personal problems. The final nail in the coffin was when the apartment above caught fire. That building has had 3 or 4 restaurants in it and they’ve all closed.
My goodness this couldn’t be closer to the truth strider you nailed the head on the nail with this video absolute 100% accurate with these places so easy to realize how easy these problems are to solve but yet the workers decide not to. Sad that they are not paid enough to care for their customers

One McDonald’s we went to, their bathrooms are locked and you have to get an employee to unlock them. It’s located in a bad part of town.

I live in a smallish town, this is true for almost all fast food places here, and is starting to happen at gas stations too.
@SqueakyPie That's weird, usually the gas stations are the first to lock up the bathrooms. Gas stations have been locking up since the 80s.

Agreed 100 percent to the disinterested staff. I remember one time my wife and I went to a Burger King and looked really checked out like they didn't even want to be there. Being a fast-food restaurant, we just cared enough to get our food and go home. Got home and the order was completely wrong. Went back and the same staff member came out to fix the meal. We noticed when they were handling food, they did not wear gloves after they tried to hide their cellphone texting. So, we called the manager and told them to just refund our order because of the lack of health precautions. The manager gave us a refund and I ended up calling the Burger King customer service number to inform them they had a store that had possibly multiple health code violations including what we saw and the problem with the store getting our order wrong experience.

I will say that #6 isn't always true. I work at a restaurant myself, and there isn't one moment where my bosses aren't looking out for all of us. However, most of them complain and regardless, blame them, and become ungrateful for it. It's just unfortunate sometimes. I will say that yes it can be a red flag, but I will say that it isn't always because the restaurant is bad. It CAN mean that, but not always.

I learned from working at a McDonald's and then a Burger King is that the darker your french fries are, the dirtier the fryer oil is. When the oil is cleaned and replaced regularly your fries will be a very light color, if they are darker brown the oil hasnt been filtered or changed in possibly weeks.
I went to a carls jr once as i was desperate for food and it was the only thing in that area. I was the only person in the drive thru and the lobby was empty. It took them nearly 30 minutes to get me my food and it was cold overpriced garbage. I only ate it because my blood sugar was very low and my only other option was the mall and i have mobility issues.
I once went to a restaurant and saw a rat the size of a cat run out of the kitchen. I noped the hell right outta there. I should have listened to my friend when she said she got food poisoning last time she went there.
1:37 Not a restaurant, but a ballpark, and we sell food there, so it counts. Our restrooms are normally very clean and orderly, so if, for some reason, the toilet paper is low or the soap dispenser is empty, its probably just the traffic from yesterdays game wiping it out completely, and an usher who cleans the bathroom hasnt looked at the situation yet. As for me, I've become somewhat of an expert in cleaning the condiment carts!
As a guy who works in food service (I work in a coffee shop) a lot of these red flags can be down staff shortage and stress and I personal opinion some customer don’t understand that. Not saying it’s excuse just making a point

I agree with the bathroom rule for all places I go. Even your own home. Even if you are very busy and do not have time to clean the rest of your apartment/house, your bathroom and kitchen should always be clean. Especially when you know someone is coming over and will most likely be using either or both rooms.

My high school culinary teacher taught us that one red flag to a bad restaurant is the quality of its parking lot. Same reason as the bathroom quality, their parking lot is apart of their property so if they don't take care of it, there's a chance they don't take care of the inside either

Regarding high turnover, it also hurts the employee as much as the business because there’s no guarantee that they can find a job in a similar industry. Speaking for myself, I haven’t had steady employment since 2011. All my other jobs were seasonal, temporary, or false starts.

Strider, boy do I got a story for you. Last year, my parents and I went to an Outback Steakhouse (a restaurant you talked about in your Top 10 Most Hated Sit-down Restaurants) near my house and IT WAS HORRIBLE! First off, as you had talked about it in the video, the restaurant was almost empty. Many tables were vacant. Not only that, the waiter that was serving us was beyond abysmal! He was really rude and it seemed like he was on drugs and took AGES to serve us. My parents and I had actually spent time in the car discussing what we thought he was on. The food was gross too. It looked like they had cooked the mustard when they gave me the burger I ordered. Also, another note, when I entered the bathroom, the men's room was SO HOT. This may be an exaggeration but it was like a tanning bed in there! It was absolutely horrible! Luckily, the restaurant ceased operations this year, because it apparently was a common thing for people to have a bad experience there.

Only maine lobsters are really expencive and hard to come by, the smaller and far more common atlantic lobster is much less expensive whole and can be cheap to buy preprocessed if you can buy it blast frozen in large volumes.
So yes, diners can infact have lobster meat in house and serve it, they just have to specify that it's atlantic lobster and that its "fresh frozen" rather than fresh.
The third point is interesting to me right now, because I just went to Seattle over the course of last week, and I actually went to a restaurant that _is_ a tourist attraction in itself. I don't remember what it's called, but it's a seafood restaurant near the coast that has a display where they have the fish put around mounds of ice cubes, and the workers there throw the fish between each other for certain steps of the process; it's been shown on TikTok a lot, I've heard, and when I went there, there was a ton of people filming it too; someone even had an actual large and pretty sophisticated camera filming it, and not just their phone! I'm sure the food is good or at least alright there, and no hate towards the people working there since it's a very unique presentation I enjoyed seeing; the point just reminded me of how I ended up not going there, since I was kind of put off by the fact that they had a crate of crayfish with their limbs still twitching...

Strider, I have a genuine question: why do you still collaborate with Doug (@Nostalgia_Critic)? Like I'm genuinely curious. And, believe me, the last thing I want to do is start a comment war, so I'll keep this brief. But, like, the dude hasn't been funny, in my opinion anyway, many others share that opinion too, though express said opinion in a far less respectful way. He's also just a mouth piece for an incredibly corrupt company, Channel Awesome, with the sites collaborator, Michael Ellis, being described as misogynistic and, for lack of a better word, an incel. I'm certainly not saying Doug is also an incel, but many of his jokes, at times, come across as very misogynistic, like frequent jokes of him distracting himself with beautiful women. Now, I'm certainly not saying you are wrong for collaborating with him, I just wanted to ask you personally, based on your own research and opinion, why you work with Doug.

I worked at a restaurant, once, where one of the waiters was cussing at other employees, and sometimes breaking things on purpose…just always showing up to work in a bad mood. I tried my best to stay away from him

Number 6 is absolutely a cultural thing. I've never in my life seen in any restaurant a cashier greet you when you walk in (even in Subway, as was used as an example in the video). That's just weirdly pushy imo. This is different tho from going to the counter and asking to be seated/ordering food depending on the fanciness of the restaurant, where you're normally greeted. To me, stuff like that falls into the category of stuff you only see in american TV shows and movies, like dedicated greeters at supermarkets, or cashiers wasting time bagging your stuff, weird things like that.
i have to disagree with #4, you have to very careful by going off online reviews. not only can things have taken a drastic change since the latest review, but people can get really salty over minor things and give an unfair review out of sheer pettiness. be sure to read these reviews, but do not treat them like the gospel truth, they are better kept as guidelines rather than facts.

I don't necessarily agree about the reviews. I know for myself if I like a place I simply go back again. I don't bother with the review. My experience working in a fast food place is that the only people who really spend the time to review are typically Karens or people who I recognized from the review and knew they weren't being honest. "Manager wouldn't serve me and called me a liar" type of posts when they walked in with a coupon written in crayon.
There was a restaurant where I live that I loved going to. They had good food and good prices, however behind the scenes there was some trouble including the owner having some personal problems. The final nail in the coffin was when the apartment above caught fire. That building has had 3 or 4 restaurants in it and they’ve all closed.
