Update! Raika Longfeather in my comments brought up something I messed up on! The tailless spell is only used by Northern mermaids which means that Erik became human by using a legs spell. Which honestly I still think is kind dumb because how would they have prevented a lot of humans from finding out about mermaids?

@@nativenewyorker3144 science? It’s pretty clear that the entire science vs magic thing was debunked in Season 1. So that last statement doesn’t make much sense. Apparently, regarding touching water and turning - the original idea was ocean sea water but the crew didn’t think it’ll create much shenanigans so they changed it to being inconsistent generic water just for the fun of it. They knew it didn’t make sense and they thought that was fun 😂

What bugged me about Season 3 was it kind of contradicts a statement from Season 1: Lewis there says, after investigating the Moon Pool, that there's nothing special about it. Specifically, he claims the rock walls are just normal rock. But then, in Season 3, the writers threw this out of the window and made the walls filled with magical blue Kryptonite. Really strange and inconsistent.

    • @HEAVYONITBARBIE
      @HEAVYONITBARBIE Рік тому +83

Just because Lewis, literally a student, said there's nothing special about the rocks in the pool doesn't mean anything. He didn't dig inside to look for samples, they need professional equipment to do that in Season 3. Also, the blue crystals in the pool and the magnetic attraction only started occurring and being active when the meteor was heading towards the Earth. I don't think it's really a plothole or an inconsistency.

Everyone bashes on Rikki for her reaction in Mako Mermaids when the girls are searching for that dragon tool. They claim 'Rikki was too rash'. But what they're forgetting is this beautiful thing called Context: If you consider what she went through with Charolette, her reaction was understandable (It's also stated in Mako that Rikki hadn't had contact with other mermaids for years)! Not only that, but she literally helped save the entire world. So if the Mako girls would have explained precisely why they needed it, then Rikki definitely would have lent it to them! And lastly: Rikki's both famous & rich. In her position (finding lost treasures of inane value), I wonder if people would have just went ahead and said: "Oh? You need to borrow this ancient, historical artifact? Even though I literally don't know you? Go ahead!"

You know what really bugs me? I still don't get understand if the water tentacles in season 3 of H2O were never their enemy, then why did it try to turn Bella into water? Also, if the tentacle is made from the moon pool water plus the waterfall water, how can the water in those water tanks turn into a tentacle? And here's what bugs me the most: the last season of Mako Mermaids is 10 episodes shorter than the first two seasons! Johnathan M. Shiff implied a movie following the end of the series where we'll see Weilan and Ondina restarting the Eastern Pod, but the movie never came to fruition. Instead, he went to work on another kid's show, The Bureau of Magical Things. If the last season of Mako Mermaids had the standard 26 episodes instead of 16, we could have had 10 more episodes focusing on the return of the evil rogue mermaid Aurora, who was mentioned and never seen in the series. I would have loved seeing her returning to mess with Weilan and Ondina's plan to restart the Eastern pod. Perhaps they'll flee back to the southern pod and have to unite forces with the northern pod to defeat Aurora. They could have introduced some western pod mermaids and more mermen, too. Basically, we could have had 10 more episodes to really further develop the plot and also wrap it all up for a big finale.

I always believed the reason why Charlotte got all the powers was because she embraced the moon pool and it’s effects. Compared to the other two that always fought the moon. In Mako Mermaids, they always get taught to embrace to moon and to let it take you. Whereas the OG mermaids were too busy fighting it.
That’s also why I think the OG mermaid’s powers developed more; because they were under the influence of the full moon and embraced the moon instead of fighting it so they were able to control to elements more.
Also, the idea of them being able to learn spells makes sense because in the episode with Rikki, she asks the mako mermaids to teach her how to do more spells

One thing that ALWAYS bugged me was how in Mako Mermaids, the moon pool water was set up to be this mystical, powerful thing that humans shouldn’t ever be around. In the episode where Cam got some spilled on him it literally gave him full control over water. But in H2O, the moon pool water is just treated like nothing special until a full moon. Many characters have been in the moon pool, swam in it, etc and nothing happened to them.

My guess is that it only worked in Mako Mermaids because they stated that the water stores moonlight, which makes me assume that the moon pool water that Cam touched came from when the moon passes over Mako, aka the moon pool water with the magic (moonlight.) One thing that always bothered me is how Luis, Zane, or any other non mermaid that appeared in the moon pool/cave. The problem here is that in the first episode of H2O it was clear that the tunnel was too steep to climb back up, otherwise they wouldn't have gone into the moon pool to swim out. So how does Luis, Zane, or anyone else get out? You could say they swim out of the bottom, but again it's stated in the show that it's too long of a dive. This is confirmed by Max when he discovers Cleo is a mermaid, he says "you swam all that way without any oxygen" basically confirming that it would take too long for normal people. The only reason it worked for Rikki, Cleo, and Emma is because they transformed into mermaids and were able to hold their breaths basically as long as they want (show never clarified how long, but I believe Louis said in like Episode 3 that they got to 15 minutes.) The only character that gets a free pass is Will as he's a free diver and can hold his breath long enough, but still the show constantly shows the characters leaving through the top rather than swimming out.
Also your point about the mermaids getting certain powers isn't really valid. It's stated in Mako Mermaids that any Mermaid can learn any magic spell. The original 3 just didn't learn the other magic spells/powers because they believed that they could only learn one. Again it's proven with Charlotte how she can use all 3. (stating that the other 3 can also use other powers, they just haven't learned how to do it) If Charlotte isn't enough proof, then there's Bella as she can use Emma's power. Also Bella's power is the same as Emma's, she just has more control over it than Emma does because she has practiced it more. She can control the state of the water instead of just turning it into ice, again more proof that each Mermaid can learn any power, they just believe that they only get 1 power. It's even proven yet again in Mako Mermaids as Evie can learn spells, we see Ondina and Mimi teach Evie.

I think the boys probably used a rope to climb back up.
Also, swimming out of the bottom is possible for normal humans, in the first episode Emma swims through the tunnel before the full moon is even up and Rikki and Cleo also swim through the tunnel before they have their tails.
I like your explanation, I had always assumed that the powers were split up between the 3 girls because they were in the moon pool at the same time and Charlotte was in there alone. But taking Mako Mermaids into account, your explanation makes more sense

    • @MindofInstincts
      @MindofInstincts Рік тому +17

@@pseudonym7628 Emma has been swimming her whole life so it makes sense that she would be able to swim down to see that there is room. They get their magic while they are in the moon pool, so when you said they swam through before they got their tails, they still have the ability to hold their breath. Also yeah I guess they could use a rope, but we see the top of the entrance many times with other characters and never see any rope or system to get back up.

So interesting theories regarding the moon pool and why they have different powers, but Bella and Emma do not have the same power, ok, I only took 1 semester of chemestry but, frozen water doesn't really act like Bella's power, water can't turn into jello, Bella's power allows her to change water or add something to it that makes it more viscous and she can control said viscosity, to make it jello or some sort of resin, is not ice, it does not melt at human touch, like the mermaid sculpture they gave Rikki for her birthday, Sophie would have melted it with her hands, or even the girls, magical powers go a long way, but there is still some basic science at work, Emma and Rikki control the temperature of the water, Cleo controls the shape, Bella controls the viscosity.

First couple seasons of Just Add Water made such a big deal about those first three girls and their connection with each other. Something about destiny sprinkled in there, as I recall. Something about the three of them specifically being "chosen". The incident with Charlotte gaining powers and antagonizing them emphasized this idea that what Cleo, Rikki, and Emma had with each other could only ever work if it was just the three of them with those powers. A new mermaid added an unstable / chaotic element to the equation. Leading up to Charlotte's introduction the show had also been drawing parallels between that trio and a previous trio that went through the same thing several decades earlier. The show made a big point about how that earlier trio broke up and how important it is that the new trio doesn't repeat their mistakes.
      And then...
First minute of the third season gives a quick one-liner about Emma and her family going away to travel the world or whatever, and they just move on and quickly introduce the Bella character to replace Emma's position in their shared destiny. They pretty much never mention Emma again through the entire rest of the show.
There's real world stuff behind the decision, of course. Emma's actress was busy working on some other project and the H2O crew just did what they could to keep the production rolling along. (I'd guess that similar excuses apply for the Mako Mermaids cast changes as well.) But in-universe, it looks bizarre and contradictory. If they hadn't written Emma out and if Bella had still been introduced anyway, odds are that they would have written it so that Bella would have had a similar role in the show as Charlotte. Another enemy to antagonize the trio.

I'm a fan of mermaid stories although I never watched any of the mermaid series like Mako, H2O, Mermaid's Tale, etc. One of my favorite mermaid stories is the Webtoon "Swimming Lessons for a Mermaid" which has better story writing as to how mermaids interact with water and how they deal on the land. There are obvious plot holes (Spoiler Alerts) like the relationship between sea witches and mermaids and how there aren't any mermen. It's shown in the series that mermaids can breed with human males but it's only shown in the case of the main character's family, so it was a question for readers as to how the mermaid population could grow. There was also a story about how mermaids aren't supposed to reveal themselves to humans, and since the story was a romance and mostly fluff, they didn't go to the extremes with this storyline and the mermaids were always kept safe and never revealed even when the main character mermaid almost let the secret slide. I recommend the series if anyone would want to read it, it's fun and cute.

The mermen section at 3:41 isn’t quite correct. It was only Zac who had a tailless spell cast on him. They explained in the 4th season that Zac’s mother was the only mermaid powerful enough to cast such a spell. So Eric would’ve known about himself the whole time. It still doesn’t make sense about how the mermen get into foster families though. Because that means that a bunch of random parents know about mermaids.

Like how in Just Add Water, Ronny the dolphin was a rescued wild dolphin in the first season but becomes one raised in captivity in the 2nd (unless they just named both dolphins Ronny). It’s really one of the things in these type of stories where you just have to take it and not think about it too hard. I watched these shows with my daughters and they weren't as bad l thought they would be . The thing with fantasy shows is that most of the time ,they make it up as they go along . Budgets often play a part in what they can or can't do.
As for everyone getting together to fight the water dragon ,while the fans want to see it , all the original actors may not need or want to return . Has your mom ever shown your friends old photos or videos of you when you were 5 years old ? You don't wanna see that .Kind of embarrassing. Same kind of thing for them. They have mostly moved on to other things . Even the cast of the second show has moved on to other things.
Yes ,there have been plans for another season that had potential to wrap up and answer some of the inconsistencies ,but due to various things, they haven't panned out . The Australian govt used to give Australian shows like this various tax incentives, but due to covid ,this was cut back rather severely.
Characters being replaced/removed on shows is nothing new. On kids shows, it's common . The actors tend to be younger adults and don't want to play a teenager for very long when they are in their early thirties . They want to broaden their experience ,prehaps start families .
Eventually ,there maybe other seasons or shows about this area .I've never heard of any of the crew/cast bad mouthing each other or the show and l have heard that despite the weight of those tails ,everyone had great fun doing them. And if a crew or cast got along ,a reunion is much easier to arrange .Not today or tomorrow, but.....eventually.
Also ,there are various fan fictions on the web. Some are....well, not that great ,but some aren't that bad at all. During our lockdown l gave our daughters an assignment to do some writing .And since my job hours were also reduced ,l did it as well . Yeah, l chose Mako. Changed a few things ,but kept the core . Added a character here ,removed a character there. Made it a bit more mature ,added a tragedy or two , added some intrigue and made it a bit grittier . The kids liked it anyway and it was fun .

Basically after graduation the other H2O girls moved to go to college and over the years the girls slowly lost touch as it happens with many school friends, I think they also moved to different parts of the world? (not sure about that tho). Sometime in the future Rikki wrote a book about the sea, pretending she was a very skilled diver. Then she returns to Australia for a book tour and that's how she meets the Mako Mermaid girlies

Mako mermaids was not meant to be canon with h2o, it was at first gonne be a show about a boy who turns into a shark, but they had the property so they were like well let’s do another mermaid show with different lore. So when they connected it with h2o it retroactively made no sense. But here are a few answers i guess:
    - the moon pool was not destroyed in s3, that was the whole point, them saving the world by sending the meteor away. What i find funny is when ricki says it hasn’t change when it clearly has lmao.
    - I liked the fact that there was a mako pond and i liked all the lore they came up with even if like i said it didn’t work with h2o, it wasn’t supposed to, but oh well.
    - I also wish they explained more about mermen, because yeah how do they reproduce? and eric says they grow up in foster care. But he acts as if he knows a lot about merman history. So I always just assumed they lived with other mermen that weren’t their father? I think what happened was in season one they had zack turn into a merman for funsies and didn’t about it that much, but then in season 2 they were like what if we added more but never bothered to think too deep about it because children’s show
    - I know someone said it already but yeah the water touching, it’s for plot convenience, just like the moon spell haha, shenanigans, it’s cute
    - Something i found interesting while watching mako mermaids is that since they have much more powers and spells and potions, there are much less episodes related to power shenanigans, and a lot more on moon rings messes and potion mishaps, because they already did everything they could with the og powers lmao. Also maybe we can just assume that none of them have the bella power cuz they’re not in ireland lmao idk.
    - I remember a few years back the actor playing nixie coming out as trans i think, but that was years after leaving mako mermaids so I don’t think that’s related at all. I tried going back to their Instagram to see but they deleted everything changed the username there, so i think they just don’t wanna be in the public eye so questions unanswered i guess. Also i also wanted a og girls reunion but that couldn’t work cuz 2 of them were filming tvd and the originals in America. I still think carribba should’ve guest starred in those shows even for one episode lmao, unofficial reunion.
I really think connecting the two shows is what messed with lore, as well as them just making up things in s2 and on. Don’t get me wrong they’re my favourite seasons, but it’s like, i was never clear on mimmi, she’s a northern mermaid but her and ondina act like they grew up together sometimes and that the mom purposely made it so zac and mimmi grew up near each other, but mimmi has an American accent. I am still confused and I watched the show a lot lmao. But i still love it

Mako Mermaids is a loose spinoff series so not much of it is tied to the original. Also regarding season 3 H2O Cast changes, H2O was only supposed to run for two seasons. The cast members only signed for two so Claire Holt had already booked her role in Messengers as did Angus McLaren only being available for half of season 3 due to booking All Saints/Packed to the Rafters. Due to its popularity they finally did season 3, however it was released two years after season 2. Thats why A LOT of their 'families' and other cast members are missing.

So the not merman until falling into moonpool thing is only for Zac bc Narissa was the most powerful and only one who knew who to do the spell.
Mermaids can change what pod they are in but not what pod they r from and what moon pool destroy them because it drains from every pool.
Mako is specifically important because that’s where the trident, merman chamber and war finishers/“king n Queen” of mermen and mermaids r from.
The cast swaps I believe to open more dimension, perspectives and also just because those actresses are no longer available in h20 there always has to be 3 mermaids like how in mako mermaids it’s standard to have atleast 4 and a merman that’s all I’ll say bc y’all ain’t gon listen to this rant so if u read to the end say something

There is also the inconsistent history of merpeople.
For example they said that Zac's and Mimmi's ancestor was the merman who built the chamber to destroy the Moon Pool and all mermaids, but he changed his mind after he fell in love with a mermaid princess or queen (not sure which one it was) and decided not to use, I don't think it was a ever said if Zac's ancestor was the same merman who sided with the mermaids and stole the Trident to protect them or if both times it was the same merman, but anyway it was stated that after the war the merman and the princess married and united all mermaids and merman in peace.
This poses some problems about why are there no merman in the pods during H20, especially since it was stated in the first season that the war caused the end of the merman, which seems to contradict this version of peace. So what happened? If after the war they joined together why are there no merman in the pods? Did tensions escalate again during peace time? Were the merman banished or exterminaded?
Also I never understood the point of Zac and friends convincing Ondina not to destroy the Trident Chamber. The argument for that was that Zac's ancestor must have decided to preserve it for a good reason, since I had accidently got a spoiler about the existence of a sea dragon on the latest season (that's what happens when you wait too long to watch a show) I assumed that the chamber was preserved to kill it, which has we all know wasn't the case, but even so towards the season ending Zac decides, even before the chamber is activated by Eric, that the chamber is a too dangerous and has to be destroyed, despite him having been the one to argue for it's preservation a few episodes ago, making the whole preserving the chamber decision null.
Which brings also the problem with why did Zac's ancestor preserve the chamber after deciding not to use it if it had no other goal other than it's original one to destroy mermaids? Unless it had another purpose preserving the chamber makes no sense.
Yes I know I'm overthinking a kid's show however I like to find logic in storytelling.

Moon Pool: I don't necessarily think every mermaid is intrinsically linked with a moon pool and it's water. When the mako pod initially fled their home a good chunk went and lived with the southern Pacific Pod. This pod appears to exist and live in the open ocean with no nearby landmass, suggesting they don't have a moon pool. Also the moon pool at the end of season three wasn't fully destroyed. It was heavily damaged with rocks obscuring the entrance, and in Mako Mermaids we do see rocks scattered around the outside of the pool. It would be reasonable to assume that whenever the Mako Pod showed up they cleared out the water entrance and given the no land rule they have they didn't clean up anything else. The original trio had made an opening big enough for them to get in and stop the comet, then leave again.
Pods: This might just be my current timeline but I think thousands of years ago there was a natural mermaid pod there. Who lived with merman pod members. Then a solely merman pod used the trident to take over the island from the native pod. Some mermaids must have died cause in season 1 they find a lost moon ring that Zac tries to give to Evie. A merman built the merman chamber to kill the local pod, but fell in love with one of the mermaids. Since opening it was tied to his bloodline alone, none of the other mermen could get in to use it. Eventually, mermaids from each of the five oceans banded together and defeated the merman pod by drawing on the powers of the oceans and locked the Trident away in the Trident Cave with one of the kinder mermen's help. I'm assuming there was a period of time when they weren't there, and they returned at some point between H2O and Mako Mermaids. Also since only one bloodline of mermen could open it, mermen were banished to the land, the trident needed was locked away, the merman who made the chamber was on their side and likely didn't pass down information of it to his descendants, it wasn't super likely it would be opened until Zac showed up. Which was thousands and thousands of years after the war. Also real fast, the mako pod is only one of the pods that makes up the collective Southern Pods. We know in season 3-4 that one Eastern Pod mermaid heard about a mermaid from a different Eastern Pod falling in love with a human guy and cursed her to turn into the water dragon. So it seems there multiple smaller mermaid groups that are categorized based on which section of the world they come from. Northern pod, Souther pod, Western Pod, Eastern Pod.
Mermen: I always assumed, given their high use of magic and spellwork that they have some kind of spell or potion that can cause pregnancy without the need for a merman. It would explain why they don't need mermen for it, but also how there can be sisters like Sirena and Aquata. Their mother simply chose to cast that spell or brew that potion twice. Or maybe a certain underwater plant with a magical property. Or an animal. We know they used jellyfish in certain mixtures. Dried algae from certain places, old shells, salt, etc.
Powers: I think certain moon pools have an affinity for certain types of powers. But the mako mermaids and any land people that fell into the water eventually got trained to use more powers. Serena, Lyla, and Nixie couldn't create storms or even clouds until Rita taught them. They also practiced stuff like telekinesis. When Ondina is given the job of training the hatchlings, we know they learn some basics like water manipulation, and likely ice and heat manipulation, and going invisible. Especially since their invisibility is their greatest tool is not being discovered by land people. And until they do learn it Mako apparently has tons of underwater caves they can hide out in. Meanwhile Cleo, Rikki, and Emma only had each other. I don't remember any of them trying to use the others powers. They just kinda on instinct used one and stuck with it. They didn't have anyone with further mermaid power skill, or mermaid magic, to teach them. Where as Evie who gets transformed from the moon pool, does get training and can do a lot more. We saw her learning Telekinesis and how to use the moon rings magic.

i like to think the magic doesnt work with bodily fluids. cuz, like, arent we touching water all the time? we have it in our mouths. they would never be able to cough, or cry.

I believe that season 3 of mako mermaids was made before *Just Add Water season 3.* I don’t know the date on season 3 of Mako Mermaids, but season 3 of *Just Add Water season 3.* It was made on 2020. I can’t really accuse of the date being different as I watched Just add water before Mako Mermaids.

Also pointing out that in mako the mermaids live and sleep in the moon pool, in h2o they went to mako at night so how would they not bump into eachother?? ALSO in mako its stated that every full moon its the mermaids job to look after the moon pool so no humans fall into it but like our h2o girls were at the moon pool on many full moons and yet never seen them??

Being a H2O fan, I checked out the animated series a few years ago and couldn't help but cringe when watching some episodes. The dialogue and writing seemed to be taken out of PAW Patrol (e.g. "Let's help this crab before he becomes even more roasted by the sun!" or something) and the stories that focused on the main trio were as cliché as Miraculous Ladybug. I didn't like how they turned Miriam into Chloe Bourgeois 2.0.

I always had the same question during Mako mermaids. Like can't you just instinctively create a shield around yourself to block the water? That should be a reflex reaction for them at some point. Especially when they are already a bit wary of someone with water near them.

I watched the show as a kid and I loved it. Never noticed any of that stuff because I was way too young to think about all that xD Never watched Mako Mermaids tho and I guess my first question would be how the fck did they never see any other mermaids during the whole H2O show?

Every pod doesn’t have a moon pool only the southern has one and a merman can coexist with mermaids a mermaid doesn’t have to put a spell on there kid zacks mom decided that it would be best because auroura would kill zack if she found out.

I feel like Emma was never actually suppose to become a mermaid because 1st of all cleo and rikki were the ones on the boat heading to mako and cleo was the one who invited Emma and again when she swam out the full moon started after she left but then she came back in and got mermaid powers and in season 3 she wasn't even there she was replaced with bella who has similar powers to emma and was already 1 of the chosen mermaids those 3 are they ones who stopped the comet and saved the world so i feel fate was against emma becoming a mermaid
