Your explanation for Shadow High's unusual skintones sounds reasonable. I don't think MGA will ever give a lore reason for it though, unfortunately. I think the real non-lore reason is that MGA is trying to use Shadow High's aesthetic to compete with Monster High, as they made sure to release Shadow High before Monster High Gen 3 got released, and the name Shadow High was first used in the Monster High/Ever After High crossover novel, 'The Legend of Shadow High', so I feel like MGA knew what they were doing when they copyrighted that specific name for their doll line. Shadow High with the brighter skintones just feels like a calculated, personal attack on Monster High by MGA from a more corporate perspective in my opinion, and I have to admit that as someone who loved the greyscale and the darker color schemes, the move to add brighter colors for most of the newer characters just feels wrong to me. I love Shadow High, and it is my personal favorite doll line to release since Monster High Gen 1, with Veronica and Naomi being two of my favorite dolls of all time, but I cannot help but look at it from a more objective, analytical, perspective at times, as I do with every doll line. As for Rainbow High's lore, I wish that it was more consistent as well. I guess MGA still hasn't mastered the art of creating lore for their doll shows as much as Mattel has (MH Gen 1 and the classic Barbie movies are masterpieces when it comes to doll show/movie lore in my opinion.).
The one thing that could help Shadow High is if there was a pop of color somewhere. The thing is white and black are actually not colors. They are pure light and the absence of light, respectively
Edit: MH Reel Drama did Shadow High's aesthetic (or rather color palette) but better

that makes so much sense. i also hated the colors in Shadow High, and tbh i thought Neon Shadow was from a different school at first lol.
To me something that doesn't make sense is the incompetence of the De'Vious twins.
I understand that they are spoiled, arrogant and not nice at all, but that doesn't justify their incompetence in school.
In Radiant Week we see how they can't even stay on topic, which is perspective. And my question is... How is this possible? We see how Lou Wright makes two revisions to the projects. She is so harsh with her feedback that it makes Amaya cry... So what did she do when she saw the twins' project? Did she say nothing at all or just don't care?
Do you think Shadow High students have to bathe in sharpies in order to stay monochromatic? Or does the school exclusively allow students with albinism/melanism?
It's a cartoon. I think the point was to show that in this universe people have hair that is the colors of the rainbow or blacks and white that are natural or dyed.
Seems more likely they are born the way they are haha

I think the hair colors thing is actually a mix of both being born with bright colored hair (say green or pink) and changing it as you grow older. Karma as we know has brown roots, and Amaya frequently dyes her hair as well. And Avery has short pink hair but wears wigs. As for the clothes, it could just be brought down to personal style choices between each character. For the Shadow High skin colors, for some, like most likely Neon Shadow, it could be full body makeup.
As for Bella’s expulsion, I believe she was found out thanks to security cameras. I personally also headcanon that Jade was the one to reveal what Bella did to the principal, albeit accidentally. Hence why she was the most depressed when Bella left, guilt.
Remember when everyone thought it was Laurel and Holly De'Vious who mightve done it or Karma Nichols that wouldve been way more interesting than the story we got!
@@kingdomorange2 Totally agreed! The Twins being the culprits would’ve been perfect! So would Karma! She has so much potential that the show never goes into.
My theory is that season three was a mess in forms of plot because it wasn’t supposed to air that way, remember they took an entire month to upload a new video? I guess they had planned other plot lines for Pacific Coast high but they were forced to launch new dolls and therefore push their storylines into the webisodes with the announcement of Monster High’s return.
The skin colour thing needs an explanation, sunny has a grey skinned twin sister and i want to know how

I think the cheerleader makes sense. Like yeah no other school would do it because it's impractical but Rainbow High is so fashion focused and artistic it probably helps the school branding and make it stand out
My personal headcannon is that the Shadow High characters wear makeup to make themselves look monochromatic, to fit with the "Shadow" part of Shadow High. And Neon Shadow uses makeup to make themselves neon, to fit their band name. Although I do wish they'd address it in canon, just to clear up the confusion.
3:45 and honestly I don't know how they can do backflips and land on high heels. Seems painful and impractical. They could have done a coin flip and chosen one uniform, hair, makeup, and emblems. Their having different outfits could confuse opposing teams

By the way, you were wrong about how Bella got back into Rainbow high. Bella made up the story of how she flew to New York to take back her submission. But literally two seconds later she says “just kidding” and proceeds to tell the real story. She called Lou Wright ever day until she finally said yes and then made her do community service. Idk how you missed that but ok.

Besides the gray skin of the students of Shadow High, what I always found odd in Rainbow High is the magic with which Glitch and Lou Wright teleport or the sounds and lights when the A's parade through the corridors! XD
I've always believed the theory that the shadow high skin tones are a body paint trend to fit shadow highs edgy/abnormal aesthetic. Itd be impractical but its a cute stylistic choice so I can forgive that.
i agree with the skin colors for shadow high, especially luna cause aren't her and Sunny supposed to be twins, if so why do they look so different?
The only thing I can think of is maybe one of the parents has grey skin. Makes me wonder how genetics work in the RH universe.
I honestly think the skin colors are just for us, as in inside the universe they have regular skin tones. Because how boring would a school called Shadow High be if they were just regular Rainbow High dolls but “edgier”?

I think that Pacific Coast High was meant to be a sequel and the episode where they were first shown was the attempted pilot. And since it didn't really get that much traction, the studio decided to scrap the idea and move on to Shadow High.
They need to go back to the pch because I need the crossover
What I don't understand is why can they do acrobatics so well when they're performing as cheerleaders? At first I was like "ok, maybe Sunny is very stretchy and can do splits" but at 3:42 we can see Amaya do a whole backflip onto River's hands! Even considering cartoon logic that should make the actual cheer squad BEG to get Amaya in the group
the shadow high characters are meant to be represent dramatic lighting not specifically greyscale that's why some of them are colorful

The "runway is your final project" is hella unfair for students that aren't directly fashion designers. In universe, it wouldn't matter how much work someone like Poppy or Sunny did, all the credit would go to Skylar and Amaya, and maybe Jade.
The cheerleader "uniforms" I have to assume they were just an example and were going to give the actual cheerleaders personalized uniforms too, which is why they kept theirs
About Shadow High... well, my funny headcanon is that they're forced to bathe in sharpie to fit in. My actual headcanon is that RH is all about "Making your colors shine", while SH is more cutthroath and is "Earn Your Colors", and they use a machine similar to the one that Amaya used in season one, and the better the grades/creativity, the more colors the students earn, even with the option of going off the rails with their skin and eyes.
And I know is the boring stuff, but I would be hella interested to see an actual class on any of the schools. Do they even have normal classes?

i think they said in the vi life that the junior high line was an alternate timeline-ish where they met during their junior high and its actually made up by vi and sunny and everyone else, that maybe why their hair color is the same lol

I actually believe the Shadow High skin tones are purely for us visually. Think about it. In magical girl anime, the transformations in universe are a second long. Just one bright light and they’re ready to go. So I think their skin is non-diegetic, just in visual form? I hope that made sense. Like, in universe they have regular skin tones
Not to mention that Rainbow Vision was supposed to take place at Shadow High, but when we see scenes of the twins trying to sabotage or when they evacuated during Natasha’s performance, we can see they’re still clearly at Rainbow High?
I think In the cheerleading assignment they made the looks match themselves as an example to how they would do so for the actual cheerleaders
Bella Parker’s expulsion was confusing to me too. I always felt that she was hiding the real reason she got back in to rainbow high. However, when she finally told the truth about how she got back in, I was like “seriously? That’s it!?” Like, how did she manage to sneak backstage without being caught? And how did sending the picture back to Lou Wright get her back in to rainbow high? I never understood that. It seemed way too far-fetched to me. I mean, she knew she would be expelled for submitting a picture of student work, so why did she think she would get away with it? I understand that she really wanted to be chosen to work with Ramona Barns, but she should have thought things through instead of making a rash decision.
I think the thing that makes the least sense to me is Rainbow Highs policy on not sharing student work. I think thats suspicious as heck. Why would the principal want to hinder chances of their student's future success in that way? Especially if she is friends with Romona. It just seems unnecessarily cruel. It really makes me wonder what kinda school Rainbow High is.
And isn't Violet and Karma etc. technically breaking that rule? Cause they are broadcasting their work (via vlogs and online content) to their following which is outside the school.

Genuinely I think MGA should let rainbow high have longer episodes, perhaps make Pacific coast a mini series so we can figure out at least what went down and maybe throw in some extra episodes. Also for rainbow high having longer episodes have some episodes flip to shadow high instead.

Yeah honestly they probably won't ever explain why Shadow High's students skin is grey but I had a headcanon of sorts, where they have a machine similar to the color changer from season 1, but instead of changing the clothes it changes the skin color.
Being completely honest, I loved the first season, hated the second and third. It felt like the writers didn’t know what to do storyline wise, like it was made up on the spot or something. Pls don’t come at me , I know I’m not a writer, don’t know how hard it is and am not trying to offend anyone.

The whole show is bad imo but I’m not their target audience. I gave it a shot though. Lol
i like to think that the shadow high students do have normal colored skin, the show just portrays them be fully monochromatic to differentiate them from the other students. it’s been shown that the inside of the characters’ mouths are normal
theres one too many dropped plot points and plot holes in the show and away too many visual errors
The internship thing is funny because I have a friend who went to an art high school and she submitted an art piece for an internship and her art teacher actually encouraged her to submit it 😂
They are teens and I think they should sometimes be seen in class taking a few "real" classes. Life isn't all about fashion and arts at that age.
Let’s be real, Rainbow High became a big mess because of rushed Shadow High arc. Episode 1 of Season 3 was so good and could of have been the whole lore for 1/2 of season 3 with the rest of this season being about the original school meeting some pop stars and learning about what RainbowVision is. Then season 4 being Rainbow Vision finally happening but Shadow High coming in too and having more lore in it. For me, I understand why they choose this group as the winners of season 3 but Shadow High deserved the win sorry not sorry 🤷♂️
I always thought that they had marker baths for shadow high and I thought sunny animation was also with the stage stuff

Alot of your points are true. Rainbow High didn't make sense. There isn't enough details to make the series make sense for adults. Kids don't really care in a whole. They prefer the 'make their own stories' in play.
MGA is trying to get dolls out to match with kids likes and names.
Shadow High always gave me the 'undead' vibe. Seriesly. Ever saw a dead body? They are pasty skin with lack of blood circulation. This also made a little sense that Luna and Sunny were opposites as life and death. Luna died.
Pacific coast dolls kind of sucked in my opinion. Seriously why have detachable legs that can easily be lost? They didn't have the cartoon characters change whole legs for shoes. Not to mention the doll legs were hard to change. I am sure kids broke their dolls trying to change the legs.

About Bella's return the story was a joke after Bella told jade the story she said "just kidding". She got back into rainbow high because she begged that's it.
Classses on the beach aren't impossible, as long as its P.E and its summer. I've had them, I've seen other schools hold P.E classes on the beach too. Or is it just a Dutch thing were some schools have the occasional P.E class on the beach during summer season?
(a lot of them are serious P.E lessons, but with my old school they'd let us do whatever as long as we were in the water. I definitely had to surpress a grin if I spotted kids from a different school doing actual exercises on the beach).
I think it would have been a lot cooler if Ramona heard she got expelled (like she had an interview concerning the internship or something.) And then had a good talk with her friend Lou about how students shouldn't be expelled for using their work for business like that. I mean, shouldn't the work you make at art school be what your portfolio is made of? And not forbidden to be shared in anyway?
I researched the skin colors of the shadow high basically when they reach like a certain level or like grade the skin starts to change color to match there school and new life idk it’s very confusing 😅
