Good video. The thing about stares was on point and something I haven't seen any other reviewer mention. It's funny to think Snyder will have two characters lock eyes for 3 milliseconds and treat it as if fate itself bent the universe to connect these two souls that were meant to be together. It reminds me of that gag in Community were they put romantic music over normal interactions between two characters to show how easy it is to create drama.

First time I saw Rebel Moon I thought I missed something, so I watched it again. Then it dawned on me that watching it was what adult onset ADHD is like.
I'm fairly sure the scriptwriting consisted of repeated shouts of "Wouldn't it be SO COOL if THIS happened?!"
Isn't it amazing how Roger Corman managed to do "Seven Samurai" in space with "Battle Beyond the Stars" and still had much better character work and a more coherent story than this? Roger Freakin' Corman! O yeah, and it took only one movie to tell the story. Guess that happens if you don't overcrank every other shot.

If you need a competent movie on a tight budget, Roger will do the job.
Tarak's backstory is even worse that you mentioned, he lets his mother fall. He has plenty of time to stop her, he can pick her and run out of there, but he doesn't. He just stands there and lies to everyone else about how he wanted to stay to protect his mother, but words do not match his actions in the flashback scene.
"Man of Steel" also had a parent sacrificing themself in a very unnecessary way while their child just looks on not stopping them from doing something dumb.

But in Man of Steel he coulda moved so fast no one would have noticed and saved his dad. The dad who told him "maybe" he should have let all the kids on the bus die when it went into the river.
I've watched numerous video essays on this trainwreck film, and this is one of my favorites! Brilliantly done! Keep up the great work!

Zack Snyder really makes me appreciate Joss Whedon. For all his flaws as a person, Whedon is great at making fun and interesting character interactions.

Again; how can Kora say that the Empire beat the kindness and love out of her, at the same time as she proclaims how they encouraged their soldiers to form bonds and find lovers to keep them motivated?! Why are the robots so fixated on this princess when they've been fighting and killing for the Empire for years, possibly centuries?! And why would a fucking admiral care about a tiny-ass village in the middle of nowhere!?!

Why are people surprised that zack Snyder doesn't know how to do characters? Snyder hadn't done anything good sense three hundred. That's because all he did was copy the graphics book. He a special effects guy not a dictator or writer.

Such a terrible, terrible, terrible film. I don't care if an R cut is coming that is probably better, we have to judge this one it's own merit because he willingly and proudly released it, and this is one of the worst written big budget films I have probably ever seen. Aside from some of the special effects (namely the robot and some explosions) the film is atrociously bad on every level. Snyder does have talent, but when he's given full creative and ego reign, we get an abomination like this. It's a shame that so many far more talented people aren't even given the chance, but someone like him has climbed to the top of the Hollywood short list.

Maybe if the film showed Cary Elwes not being a dictator, and not raiding other planets like a genocidal maniac, we would feel something for when he hilariously died

I'm disappointed it took people TWO movies to figure that out.
These movies are such snyder garbage. That scene when Korra falls into basically the engine room of the titanic caused me to burst out loud laughing😂. Coal? Like earth coal, not even space coal, just regular earth coal on a space ship. And my god with all exposition and terrible dialogue.
Never forget that the Empire has the all of the Technology to bring people from the death but their ships ran on REGULAR COAL not even some kind of interplanetary coal just your everyday coal

I dont get how the end of an 1000 generational Dynastie doesnt cus mass international division and Chaos we havent had a Dynastie lasting that oong in our history but the end of smaller ones had more impact then this

Using random tables to generate the planets would explain why we have a backwater planet that only seems to have one set of farms, a cyberpunk dystopia with mega-cities, Ancient Rome, and Victorian London / Harry Potter World so close together.

I didn’t watch this series of movies, and don’t plan to. I see this as an idea with zero fortitude for being a compelling story.
Obvious Kurosawa and Star Wars love, but that’s nothing but admiration. There’s no grounds in this very ambitious story they are trying to tell. You can make the argument that “nothing in sci fi is new, everything has been done”. Maybe, but then do you have to be so blatant with your copy paste storytelling? Absolutely not.
This is I think, a very good example of the Zack Snyder problem. Style over Substance. He can make a shot look spectacular, and paint it like a veteran artist. But the substance behind the shot is little to nothing. It’s uninspiring truthfully. I wish I had better things to say, but that’s really how I can sum it up.
I don’t dislike all of his work, but yeah…this is bad.

I don't even think the problem is that he copied something, but that he didn't understand the works he copied from. It's like a painter copying the Mona Lisa but giving her a big bright smile and claiming that that was what's missing.
The thing about stories is that they don't need to be new. They just need smart and inspired elements of storytelling, deep enough to evoke emotions and thought. Snyder's approach to emotion is on the shallow side of pretty pics enhanced with cheesy music. His concept of thought is like reading the document that contains all of the answers to the multiple choice test.
Maybe now you all will think twice about saying the same thing about the Avatar movies. At least the "evil" humans aren't trying to take wheat from Pandora
A bad movie doesn't suddenly become good, when a worse movie is released.
Avatar's problem wasn't that it's not high enough on a competition ladder, but that it's badly written. That didn't change.
Stylw over substance implies it looks good. It looked average at best.
