These technologies with data used to analyze speed of baton passes and velocity, A plus all the technicalities 0 to 3 sec in the zone and the measure of which athletes perform the task best running the different relay legs is amazing and I didn't have none of these considerations when I competed. First of all, amazing interview with Coach Freeman. The detailed look into what makes relays work and the complexities involved was truly educational. Second, the dream 4x100m teams might need to consider bringing in Bob Hayes. With max velocity in excess of 12m/s on a cinder track...how could he not be in the mix. Coleman might be a great starter, but the first leg is still 100m and Justin Gatlin was consistently an amazing starter...with great top end speed. Gatlin 1st leg, Gay 2nd leg, Lyles 3rd leg, Hayes 4th leg.

40:21 I remember this.. Respect to that USA anchor. Kennedy Simon, right? I feel like Mechelle and USATF knew their star Allyson Felix would probably get passed (maybe by Femke Bol) the same way she got passed by Paulino if Felix were to run anchor leg. So they gave Simon the anchor position to preserve Felix's reputation in case Felix had ran 4th & given up USA’s lead...
Allyson rarely runs anchor leg so I doubt they would’ve put her in the anchor position anyways. The USA women’s team just did not have any viable female runners for anchor leg because the stronger runners that year were focusing on their individual events (like Sydney or Britton).

Yea they don’t have relay iq and likely have never ran on one. I understand it in a way most don’t bc of my hs coach. He worked with the national team on starts and handoffs. Literally was gone for a week in 2006 doing that.
If the best women's team ever (all in their prime) were based purely on speed I'd go with Flo-jo, Carmelita Jeter, Sha'Carri Richardson & Marion Jones. The slowest PB of this bunch is 10.65... With decent hand-offs I feel like sub-40.50 would be theoretically possible with this team. Idk the order though, I'm unsure who is good out of the blocks relative to the other 3. Men you could have Tyson Gay, Justin Gatlin, Christian Coleman & Trayvon Bromell. I'd probably go with Christian Coleman first, Tyson Gay 2nd, Trayvon 3rd, & Gatlin to anchor. Coleman has the best start, but is probably going the slowest from 90-100m out of these 4. So I actually think you want the guy with the worst start out of these 4 (I'd say Tyson) to go 2nd so they don't run away from Coleman, luckily even with a not so great start Tyson Gay has still ran multiple 9.7s & the one 9.6x. If I remember correctly Trayvon has a pretty good start & Tyson will probably have the fastest 90-100m so a good starter won't get run up on too badly, then the most experienced Gatlin anchors.
