I have all the respect for Madame Sutherland and I have been listnening to her version of this...however I do not hear french it what she marvellously sings! With June Anderson, one can hear one single word of french.

I was reading a NYTimes profile on June from '89, that wrote the following regarding the Bastille opening: "She was told that the conductor, George Pretre, insisted that her part of an evening of operatic excerpts be ''Ombre legere,'' a Meyerbeer aria that is not one of her favorites. She was dumbfounded to learn later, she said, that Mr. Pretre had been told she insisted on the piece herself." Even if it's not one of her personal "favorites" I've always loved her recording of it.

june anderson, grandios wie immer. aber wieso kriegt eigentlich keine den echoeffekt so toll hin wie die callas. sollte sie in dieser arie tatsächlich massstabsetzend sein? na ja, ich bin noch nicht durch alle ombra leggeras durch. vielleicht schafft es ja doch noch eine, der callas das wasser zu reichen.
Forse sono uno dei rari a poter dire in questa sede di aver assistito "dal vivo" a questa storica performance, giacché si da il caso che in quel lontano 13 Luglio 1989 -veglia del Bicentenario della Rivoluzione Francese, nonché serata inaugurale dell'allora nuova di zecca Opera Bastille- io mi trovassi in sala, intrufolatomi in mezzo ai 2700 VIP invitati assieme a ben 40 Capi di Stato, ma purtuttavia latore di un ambitissimo invito personale dell'allora Presidente della Repubblica Mitterrand.

It's disgusting how easy it sounds for her. It's just so smooth and even. So jealous.
