I play co op with an all out offensive mage, and I'd like to compliment her build with a faith tank/support build. I just can't find the right mix. From what I understood, your friend is playing a mage, and you want to play a support/tank role to protect your friend and zone any enemy that comes closer, giving your mage friend breathing room to cast spells while you are distracting your enemy. Me and my friend were in a similar situation where I wanted to play my shadow mage build and he had to come up with something to accommodate. I highly recommend that you give the following build a try. He calls it Mustachio because his character was that big bully with a big mustache on his face, lol. Mustachio uses the Starscourge Greatsword with the highland axe and roar medallion. That combo gives you so much AoE damage every time you use Starcaller Cry Ash of War. This weapon skill is extremely entertaining, and it does so much damage. It will pull nearby enemies to you, where you can follow up with a massive explosion that will decimate them. This will enable you to zone any nearby enemies immediately away from your caster friend and pull/aggro them closer to you. One thing a lot of guides fail to mention is that during the weapon skill, you get massive damage negation. For example, if during Starcaller Cry you got hit for like 1000 damage, you will only receive around 500 damage. You are also using one of the most protective armor sets in the game, the General Radahn Set. Which provides strong damage negation and poise. We are using the Dragoncrest Greatshield talisman for 20% physical damage negation. Opaline crystal tear for 15% damage negation for 3 minutes. This build is one of the most robust builds you will likely play but it doesn’t cower behind shields instead it has so much innate damage negation that enables him to face his enemy head on and the best part it also packs quite a punch when it comes to deal damage, especially AoE damage. I also believe this build is Shadow of the Erdtree ready because of how much Vigor, Endurance, and damage negation you have. Something that you will be grateful for since enemies inside the DLC hit like a truck. I know this isn’t exactly the faith build you asked for but trust me when I say this, you will enjoy this build very much.
