Thanks for posting this tip! I just finished doing this mod. I had the hardest time just trying to find something that would stay on the latch without slipping off. I finally settled on a 14" thin zip tie. So far it works great.
Thanks for the vid. My rear manual release latch doesn't work at all. Yup, I removed the molding and am pulling up on the levers, but not opening. Thoughts?
@@SirWilliamGoes I took apart everythiing I could from the inside. I finally took a crowbar and pryed it open from the inside without causing damage. I removed the entire rear hatch actuator and now my hatch opens.
Thank you oh my god I live in my car and I just recently upgraded to a 4Runner and I’ve searched this thing up and down trying to figure it out from the inside
I have a 2022 and the back hatch has the heat/pressure-sensitive latch, where if I have my key fob on my person, all I do is put my fingers on the latch, press, and it will unlock and open. It also has lock/unlock buttons on the latch as well, again which only work in proximity to the key fob. How would fiddling with that latch lever to open it from the inside affect this touch-sensitive function afterwards?
All that stuff just sends signal to an actuator that manipulates the latch. The same as others just additional ways its activated. With this your bypassing that and manually pulling latch. Hope that makes sense
I am and Ive been very impressed with them. Yes they are still holding up. Matter a fact the high dollar phillips LEDs that were about the same age in the tundra recently went out yet these are trucking right along!!
Do you remember while you where digging around in there if you could see those lift gate handle grabs. I wonder if they just pop out to be able to clean the panel out.
A 334 page manual, on the unfuntainment system and no way out the back and now I get to take it apart to install a makeshift tailgate release? Sedans have a glow in the dark release tab.
battery randomly died after a short and alllll of my tools were in the drawers, which are blocking this little access panel. I will for sure be doing this.
Thanks so much for this video. I just did it today. Just in time for my 30-day journey across the US.

Nice to hang out with you last night at the King of the Hammers Shootout. My son and his friend had a blast. Safe travels Will.
Yall as well. Thank you
Super annoying that they didn't design it in the remote lock / unlock. Came here looking for a solution and found it! Thanks!
Im going to do this and run the string to front seat when i do grocery pick up!
You saved my life
Right!!!!
Thank you for this I have been wondering how to fix that issue
awesome mod! Definitely doing this before my next trip! Thank You
Excellent! My 4th gen had rusted all out back there and you gave me a temporary fix til I can get it fixed. Thanks man!
Sweet. Good to know it works on 4th gens too!
Awesome! Will do it on mine. Happy New Year, and happy trails, William!

Interesting. I'm not real sure.

That is a great mod Will! So easy too.
Are you still running the Amazon LED high beams and have they held up?

sweeeeet cheap and useful mod!

Not really off top of my head
Dude! i was looking for another way to use 550 cord lol
Love it! Nice and simple! Going to see if it's similar on a turd gen
Just find that latch. It’ll work
Excellent mod!
That fact Toyota didn’t include this amazes me 😆
It’s ridiculous if you ask me
Good to know!
Considered a few winter camping / exploring vids this Winter? HINT, HINT, MICHIGAN! 😉
Its unlike you to worry about breaking shit! 😁 Good video man! yall be safe.
Lmao!!! So true

Sedans have that as a safety feature for kids getting locked in trunk. Word is there’s no latch inside as a theft deterrent not sure 🤷🏽♂️
Is there a way to do it without drilling a hole?
I suppose you could just run the cord through the little access panel opening and not put the access panel back.
As brilliant as a light bulb. Almost looks like apple red para cord too. Thomas Edison would be proud!
Genius!
battery randomly died after a short and alllll of my tools were in the drawers, which are blocking this little access panel. I will for sure be doing this.
Yea Nice!!
you could have just added an interior button by cutting the wire into the exterior button....
This is way easier and less invasive and doesn’t mess with any of the electronics
Damn good idea care to make a video?
don't know why I haven't thought of this !!! just lazy Im sure. thanks
Same here!!!
Great mod. Wish you had shot in daylight.😀
