The back henhouse doors were upgraded with windows, the deep litter bed and egg hutch comes with high-density polyethelene, and the ladder from the run to the henhouse was redesigned.

Another fine coop down south. She will love it, so will her chickens. I would love to see another coop with the storage below the egg hutch. It is such a super idea for keeping their feed right on hand. Keep on showing these wonderful functional coops. We are WATCHING!

I am new to raising Chickens, learning all I can before making the leap. My wife, and I are looking for our forever home in the country, with several acres of land. We plan to build a coop. with attached run. and I think if at all possible we will be getting one of the American Coops in 6 foot by 18 foot. I want to let you know the new rear coop doors are an awesome idea. Windows to let in day light, and they open from the bottom, swing up to allow airflow, and rain protection, plus you don't have to look for a place to store the removable door panels. I think your Chicken Coops, and Runs are the best kit out there for those of us looking for a quality Chicken forever home.

People don’t understand that quality like this comes with a pretty big price tag. You get what you pay for.
That is the cause of the thumbs down.
I use pine shavings under the straw because it helps absorb any moisture and if a chook breaks an egg in the nesting box, it also helps to minimise the mess. Pine shavings are also great for reducing the awful smell, and are great for making compost when you clean out the coop.
You’re coops are the most talked about and the coops others compare their builds too. Nice work.

I love that size coop!
Love you coops. I noticed on this coop... the side where the main doors to the hen house are. There's that little bit of space between the framing and the doors, both swinging doors and drop down door. That little space could cause drafts. But I've noticed in more recent videos on the inside of the hen house, there seems to be plywood over the framing that produces a slightly extended lip or edge, about an inch. So when you close the doors that lip blocks the cracks and thus blocks drafts. Is this a change/upgrade you've made over time?

What size are the dowels and are there multiple levels for holding the doors w/Polycarbonate open or is there just one hole at the top and a hidden hole inside when they are closed?
How about sphagnum moss, which is so common in the South, as a nesting medium?
It would work, it's nice and stringy. We find chickens love straw though.
Could you guys sell the Blueprints to your coops? We’ll be moving to Central America, so the logistics in taking a coop down there is not feasible. I subscribed and put notifications on, because I love your videos. Thank you for sharing.

What about a mobile coop? Do you have anything. I plant alot of cover crops for my garden plots and would like one to move easy around the plots.
Hi Wayne, we have made this model in a mobile style, but our experience is that for laying hens, a stationary coop is best with free ranging.
I'm hoping to move this year to Lancaster, PA. I'm hoping to have laying hens. I love looking at your vidoes for ideas. I served 24 years of EMS and Heavy Rescue. So when I build my coop I want to personlize my coop. Any Suggestions.

We have anchored many of our coops, especially large ones in areas where there are strong winds or hurricanes. We build a base and add a sill plate and use anchor bolts. There are a few custom coop videos on this channel that show that. Check out the Sante Fe, NM coops for some examples of that. Thanks for your comment.

Any ways to build out of recycled crappy lumber and in a very limited budget?
Matt's first few coops were made after dumpster diving for lumber. So it's possible.
Just learned from another site, that chickens don't like poles for roosting. THey prefer flat. wide planks, to walk on, lean on.
That chicken coop looks too small.
How did it turn out?
Hi Allat, we have been in the chicken business for over a decade and we have researched what chickens need extensively. Chickens naturally would roost in the trees, so it makes sense that chickens would want a rounded roost bar. Also a flat wide plank does not allow for their feet to naturally curve and hold onto the roost, so whatever you read doesn't make sense to us.
In addition, we do not feel that a 6x12 coop with a 4x6 henhouse is small for chickens. We also always encourage free ranging. Thank you for watching.
I cant afford the hemp bedding, so what do you suggest since you don't recommend pine?
Hey there, great question!
We are not totally against pine shavings, but these are the main reasons we do not recommend pine shavings for our customers:
We do not recommend pine shavings compared to our hemp because our hemp is MUCH more absorbent than pine shavings, making hemp the perfect material for the deep litter system. Pine shavings also tend to be more on the acidic side.
By using pine shavings there will be much more maintenance and you will use more of it. Our hemp is actually cheaper in the long run plus saves you a lot of time.
That said, pine shavings are a MUCH BETTER alternative compared to sand. So, if pine shavings are all you can afford at the moment, that is probably your best bet if you are using the deep litter method!

I would love it even more if the plexi on the windows was put on from behind/inside the frame instead of in frontoutside so you don't see the edges and the screws.
Thank you for your comments. We used to put the polycarbonate inside the windows, (like a traditional window) but in an effort to keep the costs down we started doing it this way. It also has an added benefit as allowing water to run off and not seep in anywhere.
I think a hanging chain would be better than those dowe rods which give to much leverage to the window, high winds could damage the hinges maybe?
We have coops with both, so far neither one has reported a problem from winds, but you make a valid point. Thanks for your comments and for watching

I waould like to have raised Jean house then the run and then the contemporary hen house with storage and hen box
People think chickens are like humans? Ok, in that case , who’d want a doorway without an awning or overhang to keep you dry. Rain pours on nesting boxes. Step ladder or inclined ramp , which would you want to walk down first thing in the morning?

I have noticed when you are talking about litter and nesting materials you do not stress the need for using different materials. I have had chickens off and on for over 40 years. Now, I did not come up with on my own, but my Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles shared their experience with me. If you are using shavings for instance in the run, the reason you do not want it in the nest boxes, is that it confuses the girls. They do not see the difference as to the place, just the material. Therefore you will have a higher instance of eggs on the floor. This also is most important if you are free ranging your birds. Part of the reason for lower egg count when free ranging is the availability of the grass that they are browsing in, so they lay their eggs in that. At least this has been our experience. We use golden comets, a sex link because of their egg count, 280 to 320 plus per year. They are an extra large to jumbo brown egg. Because they lay so many eggs you need to keep oyster shell for calcium and cherry stone for grit, even if you are free ranging.
For cleaning poly carbonate or plexiglass, SO NOT USE WINDEX OR ANY OTHER GLASS CLEANER WITH AMMONIA OR AMMONIA D. It will cloud the plastic and make it look foggy. Ammonia sort of melts the plastic to give it that look. We use vinegar and water for cleaning all windows. Works good for all types of stain removal too.
I enjoy your videos greatly for info not only for the coops, but on birds too. You see even at 68 yrs old, I still keep learning from and sharing with others. God bless and keep up the fine work you are doing.

Allan great explanation. I live in Louisiana and we had chickens when I was young and looking to get some. What advice can you give me on selecting the correct variety of hens for my location. We get hot and humid weather and would love advice on proper task on raising chickens from chicks onward. Thank you for your time.
@@KrazyKajun602 I have found that hatcheries in my area can be a great source of information. Their advice can be helpful as to birds that are heat resistant. Rhode Island Reds or Whites are a good all around bird for my area. I don't t know about extreme heat like yours. Local old timers in your area are also a wonderful source. I used t raise Cornish rock cross birds for meat birds, since we sold them semi-commercially. You might also consider Pekin ducks since they are excellent layers and are good meat birds.

Man nice coops! Checking out their site though and they're just too expensive! Especially the shipping. I live in Utah so it's almost a grand just to ship it here. Beautiful and functional though. Just can't afford it and not worth the debt.
Thank you for the compliment on our coops. Sorry you feel like our coops aren't worth the cost. We use the best materials and our coops will last forever. Yes, shipping is expensive, because a standard American Coop weighs 1200 lbs. We are always working to get the costs down, and we realize the investment is big in the beginning. But many people buy cheap coops and have to replace them each year, plus they lose birds to predators. We know all our customers have thought it was worth it though. :)
Carolina Coops Videos oh they’re worth the cost! I just can’t afford it and I don’t think anything is worth going into debt for. They’re nice coops though! And the shipping makes sense. Ever thought of selling your plans to people who can’t afford your pre-built coops so we can buy the materials at cost? Some others do that.

Finally! A gorgeous coop I can afford! I really wanted a coop from you guys, having been watching all your videos for awhile, have visited your site but its so comprehensive it was a little difficult to figure out which coop was the right coop for me and affordable. So the videos definitely help!. I will definitely need to hire y'all for the installation. 1 question is it better to set it on flat earth ground or to set it on bricks or concrete foundation and put soil down? Sorry if you mentioned it in video, I watched to the very end and did not hear this information.

I love that you guys plan for deep litter! I just wish there was an additional covered area to hold the continuous feeder and water outside of the coop so it doesn’t take up floor space (and by having it in an alcove it keeps them cleaner)

I’m not criticizing you I don’t if or no way but you do have a Lotta mistakes I don’t know if this is your first time with chickens if you mentioned it I don’t know but if you have chickens and you have that big window in the back and all those windows you could still get different animals that are gonna wanna break that window we’re getting some help I seen the chickens in there and scratch on it and who is your chickens to get very scared
We have been building coops like this for over 10 years, we haven't had a predator break into our coops yet. Our windows are polycarbonate and much stronger than glass. Perhaps you didn't catch all the details during the video. Either way, thanks for watching.

The coop looks great. Very good job on construction and design. One change I would recommend. For the roof on the egg hutch, I would add a protective edging to the steel roofing. That edge can be sharp. Even in your video you show how the kids open the door and look in there. Even in the video, the kids' heads are inches from that potentially sharp edge.
You have an excellent point Johnny. And we did add a protective edging to the egg hutch in a recent build. All these things do drive up the costs, but we love to learn and grow with our coops and continue to improve on our designs. You can see the egg hutch in this recent video:

Even with the drain that they had installed, during a heavy rain the water has got to splash all inside the floor of the pen and get into the food. They should install gutters at least in the area of the pen.
Think the eaves should be a little longer. Believe they are not for fear the coop owner would get injured, as they would be head height.
Eddie Lane well the good news is if you hang your feeder and have it in about 2’ from the side wall it’s not an issue.
Monica Perez that is an issue I often think about with customer hitting their heads. Pleas keep in mind this is one of our “one size fits all” mass production coops. If you want to see eves wait until you see the upcoming video of our last custom coop in SC.
Isn't the dowel system hard on the door hinges?
our hinges are made to be used, to be opened and closed, so no the dowels aren't hard on the hinges at all. Thanks for your question.

I’m just finishing up building the same exact coop as this one. I’m currently doing the finishing touches. Is there a standard measurement for the 2 roost bars in the hen house? my father raised chickens all his life and he always put pine shavings and pine needles in his coop he said it keeps the mites down on the chickens, he would also put a dirt pool in his coop for the chickens to dust in and always put diatomaceous earth down to help with bug issues. DE will not harm the chickens/ also would put a little organic vinegar in their water every once in a while if they look like they were stressed. my father always had very healthy chickens and very good layers also. coops always neat and clean.

very nice build! Just a thought, maybe you could put some sort of flexible cover like a smooth peel n stick used in waterproofing over the hinged doors so debris doesn't get trapped there.

To clean the plexiglas...John Deere dealers sell a polycarbonate cleaner in a spray cleaner.

On this coop we used our ½" pvc coated hardware cloth around the perimeter of the coop.

I love these doors, but I live in Ontario, Canada and the gaps that I see would causes drafts in the winter that would need to be eliminated. But I like the solid door over the polycarbonate window, just my preference.

Deep litter door seems like a really bad design. When the door is down and you are cleaning you drop everything on the door just like when you are hauling any bulk material in your pickup. You have to spend time cleaning out the stuff before you can close the tailgate. I am building a coop and going to use full height doors and have a removable board to hold the litter back. Once the doors are open I can drive my tractor right up and sweep everything into the bucket. Then I will put the board back. To me this looks like a "feature" that is actually not helpful.

$7,595 to 10,000 for a coop. I would be homeless and have to go live with the chickens. This is for rich people.
Actually this coop is $4700 (as of July 2022), and it will last for decades, keeps your flock safe and makes chicken keeping easy, so we believe the value is worth the price tag. You are correct, our coops aren't usually made for people raising game chickens. Our customer base isn't do that though. We have made coops where roosters can be separated, but for the most part our customers want exactly what we sell.

At about 22:26, Matt says you could double your flock in that coop very easily, but then gets distracted and never says how. Lol. How would that be done? I love the American coop but I have a strong feeling I’ll have more than 12 birds eventually. :-)
Tai Nunez yes sorry I didn’t get into details about how to best introduce more hens to her existing flock but the point I was making to her is that at the time of video she had 6 hens and that there was room in her new coop to add another 6 hens for a total of 12. This man says stop worrying about keeping them warm. He's obviously from down south. In the height of summer, we hit 70 degrees max, buddy. Right now snow is up to my waist.
Hi Sirena, Matt the owner is from Clifton Springs, NY and lived there most of his life. Carolina Coops started in NC and then the business went back to NY, now the business is back in NC (and still a shop in NY) so we have tons of experience with chickens in the cold. We use lemon pledge on aircraft windscreens and canopies, prevents scratching. Spray on first, work it around with your fingers to break up dirt and bugs, then use a rag to wipe off. Never use a dry rag on a dry surface or with visible dirt present. All that being said, I have no idea how well lemon pledge would interact with a chicken coop and chickens. But that is the best solution we've found for polycarb and plexi. Great coop designs!
Thanks for your comments. Our polycarbonate doesn't seem to scratch. We have used castille soap and water which has cleaned the windows wonderfully.

Hi - I have a question about the snake guard. Is it necessary to do the 2"x3" predator apron first and the PVC coated black hardware cloth over it or would the hardware cloth by itself serve the purpose of a predator apron AND a snake guard?
I'm In Central Florida, how do your coops stand up to Hurricanes, flooding and constant humidity along with our heat? Wood rots fast here. We have mold galore. Would the coops last a while here?
We recommend all our coops be painted or stained to preserve the wood. We have many coops in Florida, and just like any structure, if it's done right, it will last.
