      I don't necessarily watch the podcast style videos, but I would watch every single coop it or cluck it

    This is a really excellent coop review. What a gift to have someone so knowledgeable about coops to actually share that on UA-cam for everyone's benefit. That's years of hard knock experience provided to viewers so they don't have to suffer bad design. I hope you will do many more of these reviews. Thanks!

      Yes we plan on making it a series called Coop it or Cluck it and we go around to help fix people’s coop or have to replace the entire coop. Trying something new.

      Hello Matt, I have watched a lot of your build video's and I love the in progress "site visits" that you have done. I was there when you started Video Chicken Live and try to catch it ever week. Love this new series! You can really learn a LOT by pointing out the bad design choices on cheap coops. I always learn at least one new thing every time I watch your channel. Keep doing what your doing, its working!

    I could sure use a visit. Mine was made from a shed and split down the middle and one side is working and the other is the coop with the outside door. It is about 10 years old now and wildlife is getting in and have to start over or repair. In TN

    I could fix it... at least mostly & make it safe. I think egg hutch too low for comfort for most ppl. I'm in a chair, so it's OK height. The roof CAN BE FIXED

    This roof issue is an easy fix. You’re just trying to sell a whole new coop to these unsuspecting people. Pull the walls in to plumb while lifting the sag, and install plywood gussets at the top.

      I am a custom home builder for over 15 years. I could not agree more that he is just trying to sell an overpriced Chicken Coop as a custom build. Once it is a standardize build procedure it is not custom. No custom setup would use roller wheels for closing drawers or sandwich fencing material between two boards. I thought his ideas were pretty good when I first started watching then I noticed the higher priced coops are just custom because of anesthetics and him repeating it, with no innovation to justify cost. Really disappointed.

    And for the rest of us dirt poor chicken wranglers I would of raised the house n re aligned the lower run with some adjustments and reinforced the cross beams as well as tossed both those chicken ladder out for a real ramp

    I don’t understand why people don’t build roof overhangs on their buildings. If you can keep the rain and sun off your stuff it should outlive you. If you can’t afford the cost of two or three foot overhang, you can’t afford to repair the problems that will come.

    It doesn’t have “good bones.” Were you even paying attention? The roof in the run is dangerous.

    • @tazblink
      @tazblink Рік тому

      Yes I was paying attention. The roof could be completely safe in just a few hours of work. Didn't you pay attention to my statement. He wouldn't make any money fixing it but made thousands replacing it. All that coop needed was some TLC. There was no danger in collapse at that moment you saw how they lifted it and walked away with it and it didn't fall apart. That movement is equal to a force 7 or 8 earthquake or more and it didn't fall apart. The coop needed work yes but it could all be fixed at a fraction of the cost of a new coop. I am a fan of this guy and his coops but I was disappointed he recommended the coop be replaced just to increase his bottom line. You need to pay closer attention to what is really happening in this video, if it is so unsafe why did he recommend donating it?

    If one used collar ties, then ran two pieces of 1/4 inch plywood (one on each side of the tie, up to the roof, the birds couldn't roost, but is it economically feasible ? or maybe enclose the tie with chicken wire on each side (for weight reduction and reduced cost) (I'm on a budget) I love what they have, and really enjoy light weight material, I've seen many under-engineered projects, compensated for, by using 4X4s and 2X6s instead of 2X3s and 2X4s properly placed. Thanks for the video.

    …. Could definitely be fixed. The guy who built it probably spent tons of time researching, planning, and building something that he has never tackled before for someone didn’t want to spend a bunch of money. The guy probably lost money, like most do when they venture out alone without all the required skills. Disappointing to see. Invite the guy over tell him the plan, ask if he would like to help. Don’t bash the guy. Help mend that building, and relationships, before someone files a lawsuit. Sad world we’re living in. I know you could fix it!

      At what cost? The whole roof needs rebuilt among other things. It could be cheaper to just replace with something significantly better.

    • @MikeM-bi5ot
      @MikeM-bi5ot Рік тому

      @@Ben.Rankin not much couple I hook a strap some plywood for collar ties, jump up a size or two on the screws in the metal roof. I’ve been in construction all my life. First as a tradesman, then a Forman, then a contractor. I identify and correct problems, that’s really all I do. But you give the client the option, some has money to blow, and cost really isn’t anything. To each their own. I present all options, and cost to go along with each. Up to you.

    Just pull the walls in and add some rafters ties. Chickens won’t roost up there unless you have some leghorns that can really fly. It really doesn’t need to be trashed.

    Matt, these are awesome videos showing why you do what you do. People say your coops are too expansive but it truly is a well thought out design and built to the highest standards that are meant to last. I am hoping to be a customer in about 2 years when I retire and move to Tennessee. I would love to have about 10-12 chickens to adorn my yard :) Thanks for all the hard work!!

    Interesting video! I say interesting because it upsets me someone took a similar design to Carolina Coops and did nothing the way Matt does it. And I agree, a total cluck it. The roof alone is scary. Sure you could try to fix it with some gussets added, but there are so many other things wrong with it that you'd be wasting more $$. If that same coop was built like that up here in NH, the roof would have collapsed on the first heavy wet snow storm. My own 6x18 copycat American Carolina Coop currently sits solid as a rock with over 2,000 pounds of snow on top of the roof.

    Please, don't exaggerate. This coop is not a total loss. The roof can be temporarily braced up along the ridge to pull the walls back into place. Then you can glue and screw triangular supports to create your so-called trusses. That will fix the "scary structural integrity". The other items you went over are fairly easy to fix. I understand you want to sell these folks a new coop, but

    • @barbaravolz2033

      Sorry, hit the send button by mistake. Like I was saying, the coop can be salvaged. It may not be the easiest task, but it's a whole lot cheaper than buying a new coop. As far as I can see, all you did was scare the daylights out of these people.

    • @funjump
      @funjump Рік тому +2

      Carolina Coops builds theirs to be very strong. It'd take more than a few quick braces to bring this knock-off up to that level of strength. Agicultural structures are mostly immune to inspections and design rules, so companies can get away with poor planning. Matt's out there making safe stuctures simply because he has his own set of standards

    I love this guys coops and the channel but OMG a few hours with a carpenter and this coop is bullet proof. Don't gut it, it's a easy repair compared to a new coop the bones are there, Does it need work yes but in 2 or 3 hours you can make this coop safe from collapse. The other stuff can be done at your own pace. At the end he says to donate it "WHAT" you just said its not safe and you want this family to give it to the orphan kids at the orphanage? I am embarrassed for this guy he builds coops for a living and he knows with a little tweaking this coop is so savable.
