Galadriels gift for Gimli pays off in the wider context of the Silmarillion: Feanor (her uncle and mightiest/most powerful elf ever) asked her 3 times for a strand of her hair and the always refused. So that she would grant this wish to a dwarf of all people (magical racism) is therefore very significant. In the book, Gimli plans to set the hair into cristal and make it an heirloom of his family.

The dvd appendices are honestly as great as the films themselves.
    Truly masterful filmmaking.

Galadriel's gift to Gimli paid off two-fold: first, it was a significant gesture of goodwill between two races that historically have detested each other. Second, it further solidified the friendship that was forming between Legolas and Gimli, one that basically started when Galadriel and Gimli showed kindness and respect to each other at their first meeting. Up to that point, Legolas and Gimli were standoffish and unfriendly to each other.

I think the "Council of Elrond" chapter is around 15000 words long or something. But everything gets discussed, Bilbo getting the ring, the 17 years of Gandalf searching for info, and looking for Gollum after Bilbos birthday party where he disappears of to Rivendell. There are just tons and tons of topics and conversations going on at that council meeting. I'm pretty sure a modern day author would never expect their readers to be able to keep up with all the characters, topics and issues brought up, but Tolkien wrote it the way he wanted to. One of the many reasons I adore his writing style, it's full of these quirks and he's never condescending towards the reader.

The only way to really film the council of Elrond would be to let each character start their story and then cut away to a flashback showing what they were doing. The movie simplifies the whole thing to an EXTREME degree. We never really see why Gimli and the other dwarves are there - nor even who those other dwarves are. We never see why Legolas is there. And only in the extended edition do we get a little bit of the very simplified reason why Boromir is there.
The movie skips over a lot of important stuff Bilbo has to say - yes, Bilbo was at the council as well. And there's a lot of great interaction between Bilbo and Aragorn that's in the book, but no trace of it in the movie.

50:20 You're probably talking about the "vigo deflecting the knife" thing. But that seems to be a myth, exaggerated, or conflating two incidents. Fans say either that it was a "real" knife (like metal instead of rubber maybe), when it was supposed to be fake, or that it was supposed to come to the side and Lurtz instead through it directly at Vigo. In the director's commentary, PJ just says Vigo "got it on the first take". In the actor's commentary, the hobbits talk about how Lurtz's prosthetic gave him a blind spot and he accidentally headbutts Vigo. I think those two stories were combined and created the dagger myth.

This was one of the behind the scenes documentaries that was included in the Fellowship of the Ring extended edition DVD set. That's why everything they're talking about was relating to the first movie only

Don't want to personally debate you, but was just wondering: what are your feelings about LOTR and Tolkien as somebody who supports Gaza against the Jews? Assuming you have anything to say about this, as you might not. Thanks.

Greetings for a fellow lotr-fan from Sweden. For a little more than 10 years ago me and my hubby took at trip to New Zealand just because of the movies and it was worth every penny and a memory for life. We joined a bus tour (organised by a family owned business called Red Carpet Tours) round filming sites around both the north and south Island. If you ever change your mind about travelling to NZ I recommend you check them out. I usually don't advertise for a company, but this family went all out to make us feel like a fellowship, even though we were a group of people from all over the world (Sweden, Germany, UK, USA, Switzerland and Australia). I still am in touch with several of the members of "my fellowship" 😀

Viggo was carrying the sword with him even off the set to get quickly comfortable with it as something that was a part of him. It really paid off he seems so natural, almost casual when he is handling the sword.

Yes i think this is "Cameras in Middle Earth" for the Fellowship and the next one is Return of the King. Unfortunately the Two Towers behind the scenes are much harder to find. But there's always some overlap in discussion! You can see they basically go location to location of the movie as it progresses and just talk a bit about that filming experience. I love these ones!!
Yeah council of elrond is a ridiculously long chapter 😂😂😂
Also RIP to Andrew Lesnie who is the first man you see in this video and he crops up a few times. I think director of photography. Unfortunately passed away a few years ago. Famously Sean Astin once asked him "where is the light coming from?" when filming a scene and he said "same place as the music" which i always love. Maybe that will come up next video. I can't remember where i heard Sean tell that story now.

Galadrial's gift to Gimli paid off in the movie in that when Legolas heard what the gift was, Legolas decided it was ok to be friends with Gimli. Legolas knew that Galadrial had refused to give her hair to another elf because she deemed that elf untrustworthy. That Galadrial trusted Gimli with her hair told Legolas that now Gimli could be trusted, even though he was a dwarf. Galadrial looks into minds, so the gift canceled out that "Never trust an elf" from Gimli at the Council of Elrond.

A lot of things get discussed in the book version of the Council of Elrond, because everyone there is sharing all the potentially relevant information they have to get everyone else up to speed. Much of that exposition that in the movie we heard at the beginning from Galadriel, in the book is related at the council by Elrond. This is also where Gandalf tells everything about his research into his suspicions about Bilbo's ring, and the treason of Saruman. The dwarves came to tell about how they received an emissary from Sauron trying to sweet talk them into revealing what they know about this halfling "Baggins" who happened to pick up a ring of no special significance that the Dark Lord just happens to fancy. Legolas, sadly, had to report that his people, who'd had Gollum captive at one point, had messed up and let him get away.

That doesn't even scratch the surface with Orlando! He's broken pretty much every bone in his body! He fell 3 stories and broke his back when he was 19. You can still see the surgery scar if you look close enough. And he's still an adreneline junkie! But I've listened to him on some podcasts recently and he's very aware of it all etc. I think he feels he didn't quite have a very good danger sense when he was younger he just always felt like "well i can do that, that'll be fine" and was a bit reckless. I think to the point where the hospital were questioning if everything was okay at home because he was getting injured all the time! Bless him. He's a lovely dude. I was....absolutely in love with him as a teenager 😂😂. Still wouldn't say no tbh.

There are so many lord of the rings things to see! I would love to watch you react to the animated Hobbit, and maybe in the future do a book club for these books! A kinda obscure watch that I would love to see you react to is the commentary. On the extended edition for the lord of the rings there is the option to watch the movies with commentary from either the cast or crew. One last thing thats kind of a crossover, there's like a 10 minute clip from a starkid production of the lord of the rings that is actually really cool! There is so much more to dive into with this, but these are just a few things I personally enjoy!
