Rain and humid air would have caused similar damage. What we don‘t see: grease. Instead we see a neglected hub. This is what happens if you skip service (and tighten things too much). I think that the bottom line is that you should service (grease) your hubs in time to prevent corrosion.
My current bike is still going strong after 6 years of rainy cycling. Bottom bracket and hubs still spin like new. Rarely gets washed but usually with a low pressure shower. There's obviously more to this story.
I love all of the nice little tricks, like having the washer and nut ready to use a skewer to hold the freehub removal tool in place, and all the cups to hold the bits that come out.
I blend rust inhibitor into the grease in all hubs before a wheel build similar to that used by some motorcycle manufacturers to prevent this problem depicted in the video .
Very interesting! I fell over in a flood this winter and I suspect both hubs got immersed. Within a month I'd had to replace my rear wheel as the freehub jammed up, then the front hub started making loud cracking noises. The bearing faces were all pitted. The wheels had done a fair mileage, but I'm almost certain this was what caused the final failure. I replaced both wheels as the rims were quite worn too. Your video convinced me of my thoughts.. Thanks.

do not wash your bike with water. and what else then? hugs and kisses? maybe also do not cycle in rain? maybe, you know what.... what the best prevention is? do not cycle at all. have your bike mummified and it will last 5 friggin thousand years. to brake down the technical concerns about the message 1. is it rust actually? I have doubts. 2. isn´t enough of grease enough of rust prevention in there? 3. if this was indeed damage caused by non pressurized intake of water, isn´t the problem maybe loose hub seals due to things like incorrect installation, wear and tear, crash trauma, maintenance neglection or maybe just cheap make? 4. in a normal shower there is nothing happening what isn´t happening on a rainy ride. and a rainy ride should be something bikes should take. did you mean pressure water? then we don´t call this a shower in English. and 5. specifically in winter when you may have hit a salted road, a shower is exactly the very best thing that can happen to your bike or else stuff goes wrong a lot faster than clean water damage can ever dream of.
But how do i clean my bike if not with water??? My rear wheel started makinf noises after the first cleaning...... Is this really a result of the cleaning itself?
You know, wash your bike with water, but you have to get out of the turn with a garden hose, stay away from your hub, otherwise you will squirt out grease.
@@jed954 agreed, high pressure is never good but taking the shower of your bathroom shouldn´t make the difference. The bearings are protected with seals.
@@elgrupo2069 my brother and myself work as bike mechanics (brother has plenty of certifications on bearing maintenance and other stuff after working as a Heavy duty Truck mechanic for many years) and we both wash our bikes in car wash, used our bikes in rain and etc not once we had an issue. But bear in mind we grew up with bmx bikes that have Sealed bearings and mountain bikes that also use sealed bearings, which do not care if you wash them with water or pressure washer that you can find at a self service car wash. These issues are primarily as i call "skill issue" on the user part and using lower end cheaper equipment. Cheaper bikes with loose bearings are prone to many issues. If you know what youre doing washing your bikes with pressure washer or a garden hose is perfectly safe and in fact should be done, as far more often we get clients who never wash their bikes come in all surprised why their gears dont work or experience "skips" when putting in more torque (e.x. chain thats lubed with improper lube like Motorcycle chain lube and pulls in all the dust grime and all sort of other shit) and after taking a look they have to spend ~100eu to change the chain, cassette and sometimes even the front chain ring.

Boron coated cone nuts and races are the answer . My clients bicycles never end up like this due to scheduled maintenance programs I implement for them . My own bicycles are treated much better than I treat myself . Probably.a Prowheel , Quando or NL Industries or Joytech hub .This video shows one of these low - tier brands . I avoid them .
The magnetic telescopic whip used to retrieve small magnetic objects will lose its effectiveness over time . I use a lilac style capillary scalpull to retrieve bearings instead as it has a release and compression of vanes feature in case the bearings have lost their magnetism which can happen as they are not made from ferrite steel .

what do you meant by "service" like regreaseing the hub?

if you deep clean it now, it´ll work for another 6 no problem :)

I love that magnet. Just had to regrease and replace the bearing balls without one and for you it looks so easy!

Hi! After that, the only thing left is to replace the HUB, which means to dissasemble the wheel and build it again with the new HUB, isn't it? Thanks

Cycling in the rain is not always avoidable; but cleaning your bike with high pressure water is absolutely stupid!

Mostly old grease not rust. Bearing damage probably due to impact or too tight adjustment. That said probably not worth to recover.

any ingress of water into closed components of the bike is undesirable, this is just one example
