I miss the days of the freewheel. Every time my chain stretched, I would replace chain and freewheel, getting all new bearings, spring and pawls. Now, the cassette has destroyed bicycling with index shifting, and outrageously expensive shifters and drivetrains. I miss the days of downtube friction shifters, no housing, just a direct connection to the derailleurs, I never wished back then we had indexing, the skill of shifting with these simple levers was earned and never a problem. I hate how technology has made the bicycle worse over the last 50 years and finding parts sometimes impossible. You simply went to the bike store and said I need a chain, they fit every bike. Freewheels could be built up to have any gear ratios you wanted. Cassette gearing today, and gear ratios are all wrong unless you buy a very narrow range like a 14-23. Currently I have a good setup for flats and limited mountain climbing for the road: 22-32-42 chainrings, and a: 12-13-14-15-17-19-21-23 for an 8 speed cassette 24 speed (minus repeats) bike.

@@r0ns0n0l That is precisely it, you hit the nail on the head. Racing and recreational bikes have nothing to do with each other, I road raced professionally in the 1980s, I used Campagnolo Super record and custom made frames. But today, I don't need or want any of that. Today I have the strongest recreational bike in the world, the most dependable and costs under a grand. Road and off-road has very little to do with each other too. I bought the first commercial mountain bike back around 1982 and have been gravel riding and off-roading for over 40 years.

The cog type cassettes with the freewheel built in to the cog used to break axles
But apart from that I agree completely, I've landed on 22-32-42 and 8 speed 11-34
The cassette is comparatively cheap - £20 not the £150 for the SRAM 14 speed one shifter set up, oh and I've got 175mm cranks
The chain I use is KMC 7 speed in brown steel, these last twice as long as the recommended 8 speed ones
I too am convinced they've moved to this stuff that wears out every five minutes to increase sales
Beyond that I'm a bit miffed seeing this video, I've just replaced one of these and I could have serviced it. Then again I'd have needed the tool, maybe I can improvise something next time now I know it's a left hand thread
I'm surprised to see the ball bearings not being replaced as a matter of course though

New freehub on my bike but ive started to hear a slight tinking sound when im pedaling😢Im sure its coming from that area. When one thing goes wrong with the bike everything else comes out in sympathy with it. A pain in the ass😅
