- NOTE: The "Wizard of Oz" introduction is not a self-creation - that's legitimately what was at the start of the TNT broadcast.
Oct 30, 2001 - Just seven weeks after the attack on the World Trade Center, the city of New York hosted Michael Jordan's regular season debut as a member of the Washington Wizards. Shaking off the rust en route to a 7/21 performance from the field, Jordan finished with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals in his team's two point loss.

That intro was one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen on a basketball related video before

This deserves more
lmao😆😁🤣
Ha ha ha ha ha
"First game as Wizard" is just a funny statement. Out of context it sounds like this was his first game with magical powers
JJJ HHH Never even crossed my mind before but now won't be able to stop reading it that way from here on out, haha.
It was magical to see Jordan in the NBA again as the Wizard.
Understated comment to began blabbing out at the mouth greatest player ever will be MJ bosting about L.A Lakers Dynasty teams is in another era Coaches direct students on leveling players 100 percent of fans wanted to see him out of retirement Do you think L.A Lakers wore sore losers JORDAN'S FINAL CHAMPIONSHIP SHOULD HAVE WITH L.A LAKER ?
@@edaqsaqq8374 Go somewhere with that bruh.......
Hahahaha how funny is the idea that we would televise that 😂
Like, hes a wizard now.
I can't be the only one who as a kid saw him make the 2 year comeback in 2001 and was instantly very melancholic and happy to see him back. I grew up watching him in his 2nd three peat in the mid to late 90s. Amazing times. GOAT.
old jordan is still better than a lot of players
Yep. He could still play today if he wanted to, as a role player, with limited minutes. So could Hakeem.
Lcarpetron role player? he would dominate the league.
Marcelo Munhoz da Rocha no he wouldn’t. I like Jordan but that’s ridiculous. He’s a a lot fatter today and his body couldn’t handle the intensity.
No matter how many good players today, I still choose MJ over others out there.
MJ the Greatest of all time!
no, javale mcgee is
LOL! HAHA
MJ died ... but i love the song "billie jean" though .. RIP MJ
Haziq Fauzi Michael Jordan not Michael Jackson
No, you mean Kwame Brown.
Do you know why MJ is so calm on the court? Is because he knows who he is and what he’s done for the game of basketball.💯
What in the hell was with the intro...
Almost thought I was getting trolled
trying to make mj look like a God as usual
LOL. That intro was bordering on a rick roll. Turrible.
That was part of the tbs broadcast. Not a rick roll. Lol
dude that part was sick.....the wizard of"ahhs"
Latrell talking about double teaming and containing a 40 year old basketball player, Jordan was pretty damn good, anywhere and anytime he played.
He was 38 back then
@@ichigo3761 He was 40 in his final year.
@nathan stewart if there eas no kobe... Then there was no mj too... Mj copied kobe
@@ichigo3761 dude are you okay
@@ichigo3761 you okay? Jordan was drafted 1984 Kobe was drafted 1996...
Another rare clip/upload, thanks! I've never seen the opening Wizard of Oz intro before.
I think Jordan just played for the love of the game he didnt have any hopes of winning a title with the wizards
Agree!
I don't know why he came back but I agree, he knew damn well he wasn't winning another title with Washington. Like you said I think he missed the game and loved to play it... bottom line.
***** I agree I think he would love to lace up a pair of fresh Jordans and go out there again but he doesn't want to mess up the 30 ppg aver
kpernod30 He came back to donate his salary with the Wizards to 9/11 recovery and such.
I didn't know that, thanks for sharing. I've always been a huge fan of his and hearing that makes me proud.
The Wizard players must've been thrilled playing with MJ.
who’s here after The Last Dance?!?
Yep exactly why am here
Thanks for sharing. I’ve been looking for this game since I accidently recorded the wrong channel on VHS when this was first broadcast nearly 13 years ago LOL. In the UK they showed it on BBC One as a 9/11 tribute.
MJ's return in 2001 is most greatest moment in the NBA
Incorrect. His FIRST return was far greater.
@@contramundum2.0paradigmshi10 I meant the 2nd greatest moment in The NBA
2 GOATS first game as Wizards, MJ and the almighty Kwame
🗣🗣Kawammayy Brown
Even though Kwame didn't reach 1st pick expectations he still lasted 12-13 years playing and getting paid for the sport he loved and was able to take care of his mother before she passed. In addition, he used basketball as a tool to get out of poverty not for the glitz and glamour. #anydraftisanadvertisement #lookatpositivesidesofacareer #notnegativesidesofacareer
It's funny how this is also Kwames first NBA game

YOOO!!!i been lookin forever for this ,i remember watchin this and thinkin how great it was that they mixed it with the wizard of oz ..lol
Watched MJ growing up in the 80’s and 90’s and I was hooked. Being a Bulls fan living in NYC wasn’t always easy but let me tell you. I was 24 when 9/11 happened . This was at least a small distraction from the hell that our great city was going through at that time. Something else to see and focus on instead of replaying planes flying into buildings. This was a short break from reality that only someone like MJ could provide from the things he had done in his career. Fairly tale like things. Another small contribution by the GOAT.
If jordan would've went to a contender instead of the wizards he would've been right back in the finals hitting clutch shots !!!
he could have went to the Lakers back then. he would have gotten more rings.
+Josh Haynes If he went to a contender he wouldn't be the main man at 38...no way MJ's ego would allow him to be happy having a reduced role just to win another ring.
Josh Dugan Bro you underrate Wizards MJ. He was averaging 28 a game in his last 10 games as a Wizard before injury and more importantly they were winning a lot.
This wasn't just a comeback he was part owner of the wizards. He played to try and get the team more fans in the stands.
6:55 the energy when Michael shoots the 3 for the tie. Haha MSG wanted it to go in!
That tells you how special Jordan was, even the opposing teams fans couldn't help but cheer him. You've never seen that before or since on a regular basis.
first time I'm actually seeing this. I did actually listen to it on radio home in Brooklyn.
Personally i think it looks rare to see Jordan doing offensive plays like the one at 2:32 like a normal player, without doing all the flips and reverse layups
This is back when the Inside the NBA was on both TNT and TBS
wow, double dipping
People saying he sucked as a wizard. But... He was still getting buckets
+Adrian Rodriguez 19 points for 38 year old who retired two times, yes it's pretty good
Adrian Rodriguez he average 20 point per season with the wizard even with a old age not many people can do that
Right. He was still top 15 players that year.
Who said he sucked with the wizards?
Feels like I’m playing 2k hearing the broadcast
HoodFavNick lmfao
Great interview by Sprewell!
i'm watching this and thinking to my self. kobe plays exactly like jordan
Yeah he did :(
Yes, but Jordan was more explosive.
Except for the defense😂
Everyone wants to be like mike, only one guy was actually like him
Championship Boxing I mean his moves not his career
the intro is amazing, something your never gonna see on tv these days lol.
I see it on TV every year around Christmas time.
Brings me back
after 3-4 years absence, his still got a game
Jordan had the sickest drop step snapers, shyt was money.
What is a drop step snapper?
Still fast as f**k! They were still throwing double teams on him whenever he attacks.
I love it !
he came he came back a wizard like Gandalf the black
Lol ERB
fleek dende gameing stop it get some help
I'm glad he came back, he wasn't as good as before but damn was it exciting to see him on the pitch again! It's like The Beatles reformed or something.
Washed up.
The GOAT. Period.
I'm surprised the knicks didnt ask for jordan, they're usually was used to signing older players.
Ok, real spit, I came here after reading on Sneakerbardetroit that this was the game where he made the true blue 3's famous as his second comeback. Now I'm not all acquainted with the history of every Jordan shoe model but, I always thought the true blue was an original colorway ??? Anyway, I just have to stay for this video which is now a classic being that I was a teenager at that time. How time fly's. Salaam A Leikum !
thanks man !!!!
Best intro ever!
Just came here after watching one last dance. I like Jordans loyal character but also noticed his lack of handeling of those he did not agree with. He was a bit harsh. I was impressed with him handling the media circus though
Quote letrell Sprewell " I got a family to feed I aint taking a 20 million dollar contract"
MSG loves Michael Jordan
If only he played one more season we would have seen jordan vs lebron
0:00-1:49 The Wizard of Ahhs is just a pun on The Wizard of Oz surrounding Michael Jordan’s 3rd and final return in the NBA, and is a nod to his brief stint with the Washington Wizards. I bet team mascot G-Wiz was kind of proud that he, and his team did these honors related to that subject.
Jordan!!!! 2020
Idk why the media act like MJ on the wizards was trash he was still at the very least a top 10 player in the league
Because they were trash, bud. 37 wins 45 losses and didn't make playoffs in the weak Eastern Conference (was trash back then).
The Wizards* were trash, MJ wasn’t. You heard Spreewell at the very end, with Sager trying to bait him into saying Father Time has caught up to him, Spreewell says Jordan’s teammates need to step up.
Miss you, Craig. ;(
Rest in peace. Alright, Mr. Sager?
Seeing him in a Wizards uniform will never not look weird to me.
Goat from all spor
The Guy's face at 0:09 was priceless
WTF! what's up with the music in the begining
#5 My man KWAME!
Latrell was bang on
LeBron Gonna need that Fadaway...
How many 38 year olds would be getting double teamed with regularity?
Lebron
Who would of thunk that Sprewell would actually have something insightful to say.
Spree is more intelligent than he looks.
mj better than ever why the wizards damm it should have return to the spurs or someting and one more ring.
Yea MJ better than ever 7-21 FG ,serh gut
This was the first game at MSG after 9/11
watching fuckin kobe brick every shot he takes really brings home the point of how good jordan was at the age of 38
+lifetimeskater24 you also forget how many times Micheal retired whether you like it or not hes the second greatest player in NBA history behind Wilt chamberlain
+Jason C Wilt was a post season loser who got carried to his rings.
Why was the intro so long and bizarre
the 9/11 attacks stole the spotlight. this wud of ben the top story of the yr without the 9/11 attacks
And in other news, the American education system seems to really be on the decline.
infntnub And in other news. 5% of UA-cam'rs use or know grammar
***** that was 2 months ago.
+ArtjomGlad 😂😂😂
Thumbs up for any who skipped to 2 minutes.
R.I.P. Chris Whitney
If Jordan didn’t retire he would have 9 chips
Ahahah the intro is art
Put this one in 2k16 01-02 wizard Jordan
Just buy NBA 2K3. That's the closest you will get to this era Jordan.
Wait if this is Jordan's first game as a Wizard then how did TNT get highlights of him wearing a Wizards uniform? Unless it was the pre-season.
Warden Freeman Yessir, those were preseason highlights. Here is his very, very first game in a Wizards uniform (preseason debut): ua-cam.com/video/0rpk_jXh6Xg/v-deo.html
Of all the teams...
The wizards?
does anyone know why?
He was in the Wizards front office prior to his return and figured he could motivate his team to be more competitive so he stepped down from his position and signed as a free agent.
Came back to help those guys, and Rip Hamilton was the only one to listen smh
Who was number 8 at the end of the game?
Latrell Sprewell one of the most underrated SG ever
Bro looking back.. Dude MJ looks super old playing!
I was the thinking the same shit
he look like the old head who can score against the youngings in the park
+ChuckTay23 I always thought Jordan aged too early, he already looked almost like this years before
Retald video with that music
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
He was close to the capital of the US.
Now he's in the US capital.
'you're a wizard Micheal' 'I'm a what?'
Latrell best player of the game interview was all about MJ. 🤣
jordan seemed like he wasnt himself for those 2 years because of age but when you look at it from another angle,at lot of factors come into play, this was just like the first years with jordan and pippen, just kind of getting adjusted, if jordan would played maybe 1 or 2 more years, with hamilton, maybe a 7th ring or even an 8th would have popped onto his fingers
No, that's ridiculous.
vanir23
i know a title seems farfetched but im sure the wizards would have turned out to be a big menace
BloodyandEnchained You're out of your mind.
Bloody i am jordan fan but with that team you must be crazy...
I sorta snickered. I'm a huge Jordan fan, but the most he would have gotten out if that team would have been another playoff bout. A seventh ring would have been highly unlikely. Then again we have to factor in that he would have had Gilbert Arenas if he had stayed for the 2003-2004 season.
I love Michael Jordan.. but come the fuck on commentators. If he got a lay up in, the commentators would be so excited like someone got a game winner. That's Michael Jordan. Great player, Bad commentators.
Someones jealous.
Lets just forget that Jordan was ever a Wizard
nah
He would never have passed 30.000 points, I think it was important. Him showing he was still able to make 50-points performances at 38-39 years old after a three years retirement plus he was injured when he came back, that just shows us how good he was.
I wonder what would have happened if he had joined a decent playoff team instead of the wizards
The Wizards were going to make the playoffs before his injury. They were 26-21 at the all star break before he busted his knee against the Kings in a collision with Etan Thomas
and they lost 9/10 next games after the injury and eventually missed the playoffs.
Choked
i just noticed jordan travels alot. especially on the spin then fade away from the defender when posting up.
why the refs dont call them????
look @3:44 against sprewell. thats a travel. he shuffles his pivot foot when spinning.
I remember this I was so excited but I did not like with the wizards he should have came back to Chicago
What always irks me is how they call Madison square garden the “most storied” or “greatest” arena in basketball. The knicks are historic losers, the lakers and Celtics arenas (despite not being the originals now) are definitely more important to basketball history and more legendary than msg.
It was like Jordan had a vision in 2003 a dream that there was gonna be a kid named LeBron James who would eventually become the GOAT and Jordan woke up and said I need to come back to the NBA and see if I got it still 😂😂
Stop talking basketball. Lebum is not the goat. 6-0 > 4-6 stfu
mj made the game look sooo easy for him
Even at 40 years old.
were not in chicago anymore brosephino lol
It would be me against you in a Varsity 21 in Chicago bruh
No modern defense can stop mj...as what these kids brought on debate...he can beat zone defense
If this was a video of Lebron then everybody would point out the travel at 3:35 ;)
This is why no one ever brings up MJ with the wizards
Timmy just turned 40 about two weeks ago.
***** he's not a perimeter player so the comparison is invalid
Marmalada180 Stockton, Nash, & Gary Payton
+SonOfBoromir Jordan also didn't have the talent level around him that Duncan has, you blithering idiot of a fuck wad.
+Tyson “Champ” Miller And everyone is going to say the same with kobe after his return from injuries. Personally, I would rather have this MJ, than Kobe who relied too much on good teammates. Kobe always had an allstar team, and now he is struggling bad with shitty teammates. Jordan alway did good to great with what he had.
tf? This ain't Kansas...
Let's all remember not to knock Michael on this last effort since he was 48 years old. Name me another 48 yr old who can come out of retirement and have as much impact.
38 years old not 48 lol

I bet if the Wizards had players like Wall, Nene & the others on the current roster back then. Jordan would have won a championship just didn't have enough talent around it's like Lebron when he was with the cavs the first time around even the GOAT needs help. plus he was very rusty not making no excuses tho.
A championship!?!? This was the era of the the Shaq and Kobe Lakers and the twin tower Spurs. Boy u STUPID. Nene and Wall? LMFAO.
jifyum07 he's using lebron in his argument, of course he is.
Are u saying LeBron isn't an all time great?

he kind of looked like karl malone
good eye, now use your head as to what was going on behind closed doors...
jerseys were made so cheap and badly in the early 00's...the elastic around the neck was always shitty, materials were crap, looked too baggy. Glad those days are behind us now
I liked that look, it was in style back then and looked beast.
Horrible baggy and stretched out
