TORONTO (AP) -- Vince Carter lit up Michael Jordan for 19 points in the first quarter. Jordan bared down in the second half.
The Washington Wizards rallied from a 19-point deficit, holding Carter scoreless in the second half to beat the Toronto Raptors 93-88 Sunday for their season-high sixth straight victory.
"It took me a whole quarter just to understand what his tendencies are, and how I could take his rhythm away," Jordan said. "We wanted to shut him down as much as possible and make the other guys hurt us."
Richard Hamilton scored 27 points and Jordan added 21 asWashington matched its longest winning streak since a six-game run from Dec. 15-26, 1997.
Chris Whitney made three big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help send Toronto to its fourth straight loss.
"Just Jordan's presence on the floor got Chris Whitney two wide open 3-pointers for us to break that game open," Washington coach Doug Collins said.
The Raptors, who held their big lead in the first quarter, have lost six of seven.
Carter had 23 points in the first half before Jordan denied him the ball in the third quarter. Carter took just four shots in the second half.
"Michael withstood that 19 point flourish early, and came in and locked in," Collins said. "Michael didn't run away from a defensive challenge, and that's why he's the best."
Hamilton, who has been outscoring Jordan during Washington's wining streak, scored 11 points in the third quarter as the Wizards outscored Toronto 27-16.
Collins asked Jordan to guard Carter because Hamilton became frustrated when he had to guard Carter in the preseason.
"In the preseason Hamilton guarded Vince, and Vince had 27 in the first half and Hamilton had nothing, and it really messed with Hamilton," Collins said. "I asked Michael before the game 'Will you guard Vince?', so that will free up Hamilton to be more offensive minded. Michael said, 'Not a problem.' "
Whitney's 3-pointer with 10:29 left in the fourth quarter gave Washington an eight-point lead.
Alvin Williams later narrowed Washington's lead to three with a layup, but Whitney followed with a 3-pointer with 3:32 remaining. Toronto's Hakeem Olajuwon fouled Brendan Haywood on the play, and Haywood made his free throw, giving Washington a 86-79 lead.
Whitney then hit another 3-pointer to make it a 10-point lead with 3:02 remaining.
Hamilton credited Jordan for the victory.
"Vince hit a lot of great shots in the first quarter, but Michael did an excellent job on him," Hamilton said. "He's one of the greatest defenders in the game."
Carter scored 19 points as the Raptors took their early 19-point lead. Washington followed with a 17-1 run with Jordan on the bench, holding Toronto without a basket for more than six minutes.
"There is no reason to panic," said Carter, whose team will hold a players only meeting Monday morning. "We did not make shots, we didn't run, and we didn't communicate. They did a lot of things well and we didn't have an answer."

that's not prime vince, he's only a couple years in the league at this point he hasn't rounded out his game yet he's still raw. and even though he didn't score in 2nd half, he was making the plays defensively and causing turnovers. MJ did this at the age of 39 with tendinitis in his knees, getting knees drained, cut ligaments on his shooting hand, and busted up ribs while being retired for 3 years and smoking cigars! LEGEND!
Before he went down with the knee injury he was averaging 25 6 5 while playing great defense and being in the mvp convo with a winning record! Last 10 games before injury he was averaging 29 6 6 on 47%Fg, if it wasn’t for the knee injury he was on pace to average 30 8 7 or 32 8 8 playing great defense with a 50 win season and a high playoff spot along with a scoring title! All that while being 80% healthy and playing with zero all stars alongside playing with harder rules and more physical play then today’s game!! GOAT
Never mind what a PRIME MJ would’ve done, they wouldn’t even be able to handle a 90% healthy 39 year old MJ!
Stick that same 80% healthy 39 year old MJ in today’s water down league he’s a slightly better version of Kawhi Leonard and would average 30 8 8...It would be KD, MJ and Kawhi as the 3 top best players in the League.
I always appreciated and enjoyed Wizards MJ because it showed a 39 year old injury ridden MJ schooling the next gen young crop of superstars lol!!! Wizards MJ is underrated!

Hunned Proof Productions Exactly! Wizards Mj playing in this era where the rules are specifically made to make everything about the game easier would dominate! The thing about Wizards Mj is that after he went down with that knee injury, that coupled with all his other injuries just made him not the same player. Ron Artest states that before season began if he didn’t break MJ ribs during practice MJ would’ve averaged 35ppg. That’s a 90% Old Mj averaging 35ppg! Wizards Mj years where very very underrated.
Kawhi is a beast and the best player in the league as of now and even this year he wasn’t 100%! Can’t wait till he gets 100% it’s going to be fun to watch!!

Jordan's knee was suffering even before the preseason. He was getting in good shape in the summer, before Ron Artest inadvertently broke a couple of his ribs during a scrimmage. MJ had to miss several weeks of training, and then pushed himself too hard to make up for lost time. By the time the preseason started, his right knee was riddled with tendinitis and he was in pain most games. The fact that he put up the numbers he did, including the 51 point game, on basically one good knee at his age is astonishing. GOAT.

And then MJ locks him down in the 2nd half (with a bagel!) when it counts. And at 39 with a wounded knee, no less. Embarrassing game for Carter. Thats what made the Bulls so good in the 90s, btw. They knew when to turn it up. Game tied with 6 min left in the 4rth? Its not even a close game.

Kobe, Kareem, Wilt, Oscar, Bird, Magic, Dr J, Sir Charles, Hakeem, all tougher and loyal to their coach and teammates. Real sports, not media MSM, SJW contrived sports as nowadays. For him, since he didn’t have a real coach to mentor him, or father figure to show him how to be a winner, stats is his name of the game. U don’t believe me? The moment he retires is when he’ll be exposed. Not so much in a bad way, but in a way that will show he’s not one of the top 10 goats in the games history.

    Wow, MJ is unreal.
VC was trying to go AT Mike and it worked early but MJ just learned throughout the game and clamped down later on. I also watched one T-Mac duel with old MJ, those young bucks just can't really get an edge, and they're maybe even trying too hard. They got ALL to lose in this duel and Mike has nothing to gain. Zero pressure for MJ and he could capitalize on young bucks feeling they weren't really up to the task of going up against the GOAT.
Only one man didn't fear MJ and that was Kobe. Well, Reggie also, but let's stay with Kobe. He would never allow this to happen. I mean Kobe was going at Mike when he was 18. He sure wasn't gonna lift his leg off Mike's throat or show compassion to the aging GOAT. Their last duel, Kobe put up 55 points. Happy retirement, baby!
