Absolutely agree with you ....the Valencian local government s incompetence is stark and they ve acted like utter buffoons The warnings came 8 hours after the rains began and they kept downplaying all of it throughout the incident . Terribly upsetting that the local government did not act prudently nor correctly.....too many lives were lost while they fiddled around
We were there when it was happening. We were due to drive from Valencia to Toledo at 10 am on the 29th when we left there was very heavy wind in Valencia but an hour into our drive we were in the middle of the storm. Very heavy rain, strong wind and lightning. On the side of the highway we could see the water rushing past. The GPS directed us to leave the highway and take side streets to avoid traffic, thankfully we didn’t do that and stayed on the highway otherwise we could have been swept away. We are safe but it was the most frightening experience. We live in Singapore and are used to seeing heavy rain but I have never seen a flood ever. My heart goes out to all the people that were affected by this disaster.
Put Utiel (the origin of the flood) and Paiporta (the worst hit destination) in Google Maps. It rained so heavily in Utiel that the water dragged trees, hundreds of cars and debris down the river destroying everything in it’s path (roads, bridges, more cars). It wasn’t even raining in Paiporta, they were simply buried by the avalanche coming from upstream, their streets full of piled up cars and everything else, leaving the street level, bottom floors and garages under several meters of water and mud, and under all that, many drowned residents. 😢
Natural disasters not only kill but cause billions of dollars of damage and trauma that never really leaves. RIP all the victims. Sending blessings from Australia where both floods and fires kill each year. 💔
@DementiaDon they run a weather modification project in that area. it's to convince people of their climate change agenda to force people into smart cities.
A valencian citizen here. The flooding was coming from inland mountanous villages and towns like in the 1957's devastating flooding. However, this time 'round Valencia city escaped unharmed due to the 'Plan Sur' which channeled the riverbed further south. Hence the flooding encountered a barrier and the worst affected area was Valencia city's hinterland: Paiporta, Alfafar, etc☔🌧️🌊 In 1957, 81 lives were lost. The death toll as of today is over 200 people and counting... Minute 7:35 Crystal clear explanation and policies to offset the harmful effects of flash water pouring in urbanised, heavy populated areas.
I'm not sure about valencia but in the canary islands we constantly get warnings that the perfect storm is coming and then nothing happens so when an actually dangerous storm comes nobody takes it seriously, maybe something like that also happened as its the same organization responsible for warning for the rest of spain
Some people have trouble understanding what a flash flood is, by comments I have seen repeatedly on social media, that people should have gotten away from the flood. Lots of people were just driving and were hit by a torrent of water appearing suddenly. That's why it's called flash flooding not normal flooding.
Yes, in most areas it was a matter of minutes until the water was two meters high. People were caught trying to leave the areas in their cars when the water hit. Insurance doesn't cover loss from events like this, so people will be left paying to rebuild and for cars that are destroyed.
"I'm going down the stairs to move the car" turned out to be the worse thinking many of the dead people had that day. Folks, no matter how much your car cost to you and how bad financially you'll be without it, it's better to be alive
Many people were coincidentally in the garage getting ready to leave, not save their car, when suddenly the water rushes in. I saw a clip of a man in his car thinking he’s leaving to visit someone and water is pouring in through the door. Literally within 10 seconds the water is at his window. It wasn’t raining in Valencia when this happened. People weren’t notified of the possible floods in Valencia.
@@Alesandra-bu4iz Sure, nobody ever expected such amount of water in that little time, is a tragedy and I hope some officials end up paying prision time for the huge negligence!
I LIVE IN SPAIN AND ARTICLES ARE SAYING AS FOLLOWS: A professor of Hydraulic Engineering denounces that flooding in Valencia “was a disaster foretold”. Félix Francés, professor of Hydraulic Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, criticizes that, despite the numerous “perfectly viable” projects to minimize the risks of flooding in the Rambla del Poyo, the authorities have never done anything.
Warning System completely nonexistent in Valencia. We didn't receive any emergency texts until 8pm when it was already too late. In the Midwest in USA where I grew up, we have Tornado Alarms that blare loudly throughout the city. Valencia government should consider adopting a similar alarm for floods. Not only do we have a Tornado warning, we have a system where all TV programs are stopped, and an Emergency broadcast comes on to warn citizens as well. And usually if it's expected to be a deadly weather, the governor or mayor holds press conferences a few days or weeks before to inform citizens. None of that ever happened in Valencia.
Yeah they've had floods before but nothing on this level... This is typical human behaviour, unless there is a major catastrophe the authorities won't implement the necessary changes... Always implemented after the event
The president of the community dismantled the Military Emergency Service to "save" money. He also failed to give the alarm. Now they are blaming the socialist Central Government. Mazón knew about the emergency days before and only gave the alarm at 8 pm when people were on the road off work when he could have given the alarm hours before and not so many people would have died.
If any city in the USA got 472 liters in one hour, there will no be any house standing, and don't make me start talking about the power distribution. I have been almost three days without power for a storm.... living 10 millas from the White house. The huracanes start in África and are tracked for weeks. These storms in the Mediterranean are fast sometimes less than 12 hours.
I live in Valencia, and I received several warnings (first orange, then red) from AEMET on my phone before the situation became as severe as it has been. However, many people seemed to misunderstand the danger of the phenomenon or did not receive the warnings. I’m actually surprised by the number of casualties, because having experienced it firsthand and seeing it now, I would have expected even more. But the coming days may reveal a higher number... I'm so sad for my city of adoption. I managed to gather dozens of bags of winter clothes to donate today, thanks to my neighbours, but we’re still in need of drinking water.
I am in the Spanish Canary Islands and we knew of the storm warnings for the peninsula several days before the floods. The local authorities did not order residents to stay home, or evacuate.
I'm living in Cabanyal, Valencia right now and I got a red warning (danger to life) weather alert on my phone on Monday night in advance of the weather on Tuesday. The truth is most people disable their weather alerts on their phone as it's a nuisance most of the time. If I didn't have that alert I wouldn't have had a clue until it was actually occurring. The day after there was still hundreds who didn't have any idea of the devastation.

Same thing happened years ago when Edmonton Canada got a tornado warning. Only 2 radio stations had their weather radios on, so hardly anyone got the warnings. Nowadays there's an alert that overrides whatever is goingon.
Europe is noticeably warmer than it was 20 years ago, when I was a child, and it's the second major flood this year in Europe. But we're still burning oil... I feel like climate change has been significantly more extreme in Europe than the global average. My condolences to the victims and their families.
My only hope is that since now the effects are visible here as well, and not only in the global south, people will finally move and stop the worst from happening. Because if not, these things will only get worse and worse.

This is a massive failure from the government in Valencia to warn their population...
The alarm was sent very very late. I think I received it at ~20:00, then in the following days at 7:00 AM to avoid going to Valencia so the workers can do their job. Why it was not the other way around?? It should have been triggered on the first day no later than 9:00 AM.

The warning system was a failure, due its began at 20:30pm when the mud floods where at the towns and was too late for starting the evacuations of the people. In fact I recieved the message alert at that hour on my phone, like the rest of my family. On the other hand, some universities where more concerned about the Dana, so they gave and advice to the students for staying at home and not coming to classes. This alert of the universities, was gave at 11:00am So in the end, the responsibles of his failure were the Regional Government of Valencia, because they are responsibles for sending those alert messages on the phones. And also some business owner, who insisted to their employees going to work when some of them where well known about the risk of the Dana
HALF A METER rain in 8hrs or so is not easily soaked, specially when it hits drought toughened soil and mountains. The only real way to lessen these extreme events is: STOP BURNING FOSSIL FUELS.
Part of the problem lies on drought killed vegetation and doil that does mot allow any water to penetrate it in first few hours of rain. Having trees and absorption places could have taken few centimeters from the flood, but the amount was way above these measures.
Do you believe there was no extreme weather before the industrial revolution? This is a natural phenomenon that has happened before in this region, nothing to do with fossil fuels. The actual path to lessen the damage in the future is building better water management and alarm systems.
Oh you are a fool! - the climate is cyclical! It is tragic, but the area that flooded is a known flood-zone between 2 rivers, which now is built up with concrete towns and lots of people - In the old days only farmland was located in that area! The last very big flooding was too long ago for most people to remember - FUN FACT for you: they knew flooding happens, that is why they built a deviation of 1 of the 2 rivers to avoid it flooding the city of Valencia by the coast ! Look that up on a map!
Gota Fria happen on a regular basis across the Iberian peninsular. The suggestions from the "expert" are pointless the amount of water in this Gota Fria was not only unexpected it was unprecedented. Global temperatures have now crossed the threshold, so unless the worlds leading polluters act, nothing will change.
Too many Spanish are minimising it by saying that it’s normal to have the DANAs in that area, completely ignoring the fact that this was the worst DANA ever.

Vivo en España, y esto ha sido una tragedia, lamentablemente todavía quedan más muertes por confirmar, las imágenes de la devastación hablan por sí solas😢
We too live in Valencia proper. The news reports can be confusing because Valencia is both the greater region as well as the capital city of the region. Similar to New York, NY. Our son returned from a trip overseas on Tuesday, just a few hours before the airport was flooded and shut down, stranding 1,500 travellers overnight. Authorities were unprepared because a flood like this hasn't occurred in a century. It caused triple the casualties of the previous largest flood back in 1957. The aftermath of that disaster compelled the government to redirect the Turia River, which bisects Valencia, to flow south of the city. It's mainly in the south where the majority of the deaths occurred. Whether one action led to the other time will tell. Another reason citizens were unprepared is because it wasn't even raining in many areas hit with the flash floods.
This is so sad, so many are responsible but are not speaking. Similar situation happened here on Bosnia and Herzegovina only 25 days before here. I hope there will be a solution soon. My prayers go to all who have lost their loved ones and properties.
I don’t think anyone can be ready for flash flood I watched and seen a lot of terrifying scenes and like they all say it happened so quickly don’t think anyone could be prepared for that situation sadly. I agree I don’t think anyone can be ready for a flash flood, I was in one along time ago in Texas and at least I made the choice not to try to rescue my car but to stay up on the second floor. I didn’t notice it till too late because I was already on the telephone talking about a relative in the hospital unrelated to the hurricane that just sat on top of my city, raining hard Prayers to all the people the region that they get the help they need in reality.

I mean there is so clearly something going on with the climate, also with the amount of energy we use how can people not understand these changes affect delicate balances. Where I live we have strange weather far more often. Even those a lot older than me can see a difference.
When you muck about with weather patterns through cloud seeding, chemist trails and atmospheric heating this is the result. The low was blocked by two highs half over the med and Spain mainland resulting in moisture being sucked up and dumped. Check out the rivers in the sky , there is more water in these bands then the whole of the Amazon river . Block one of them and it will rain for ages .
We are at 1.5C. And we are going to be permanently above that line in coming few years. 15 years to 2C. And yet still our emissions and following temperature are at or above the predicted worst case scenario. Our governments are driving us toward rapidly worsening climate conditions with extremes like in Spain and everywhere in the world. Food prices are already up due to climate change. And that can be seen any time we go shopping. This is also one of the main drivers of inflation as studies shows. This means byebye to 2% inflation targets. And the share is only growing. Also losses on all houses, cars, life and so on are adding the costs rapidly for everyone. Inflation will be far worse in coming years.
EU must stop Climate Change , lock all Factories 😂 meanwhile Asian and African people can buy new cars non euro and dumping plastic on beaches. Asia is 40% the problem
When meteorologists keep exaggerating the weather forecasts every day about climate change people begin not to take notice,. Remember the story the boy who cried wolf!
Climate Change Fearmongering to avoid looking at the real causes of this catastrophe. Cold Drop is a regular event in Spain and dramatic flooding events have always happened, occasionally some very bad ones. This event is not unprecedented by any means. The Valencia flooding of 1957 was x6 times worse, causing twice the amount of deaths in an area that back then had 1/3 of the current population. After the 1957 flooding major ingeneering transformations were performed, which have saved downtown Valencia this time. However, as the city expanded and tripled its population, instead of continuosly improving the flooding prevention infrastructures the so-called "ecologists" have lobbied for destroying such infrastructures. TERRIBLE!!!!
Another flash flooding, in the exact same area in Valencia, took place in 50s, circa 70 years ago. Flooding is a natural event that used to happen before the climate change, too... just saying. Climate change driven or not, it's not that relevant... the only relevant point is that a lot of lessons about careless behaviour, complacency, etc need to be learnt after hundreds of people died last week in Valencia. Because unfortunately last week, although the flooding event was known to the civil protection and the meteorological institute the day before, well in advance, the first warning was given 2 HOURS AFTER the flooding had occurred.
Las alarmas no fallaron , saltaron en los teléfonos, el problema es que fue muy rápido y pasó en una hora muy concurrente de tráfico, personas trabajando etc etc , y nadie pensamos que iba a ser tan grave 😢
Did anyone mention that they cut off the river that ran through Valencia and made it into a park - the river was redirected down a storm drain that looked like the ones you see in LA. I thought that whole project was part of a flood abatement programme and it may have worked for annual little floods, but it didn't this time ... does anyone know if they redirected flood waters down the park that is in the old river bed? Valencia is not the only place that the have redirected rivers around cities, they did it in Seville and even the river at Malaga which flooded has been 'contained' by concrete walls and straightened. So its not just global warming that causes these problems though it is fashionable to blame it for every problem. Did the sea-level rise as a result of the low-pressure too?????
General Franco ordered the southward diversion of the notorious Turia River after the catastrophic flooding of Valencia in October 1957 which killed over 80 people. Valencia (sea level) is surrounded by hills and the Turia River has been the source of extremely heavy periodic flooding in the area numerous times over the centuries even before the founding of Valencia by the Romans 2200 years ago. The diversionary work was completed in the late '60s and may well have helped to limit damage to the city following this most recent flood event. However its protective effect may have been compromised by the decisions of greedy property developers and nonchalant local planning officials who, since the '90s have been signing off on huge levels of urban development in the area despite its long history of devastating flooding. The issue of the impact of industrial local, regional and global environmental degradation clearly merits very serious attention indeed but sometimes simple geography can be a real pain in the buttocks!
This dreadful event is NOT *unprecedented!* There is a very well documented history (especially since the 14th century) of extremely heavy flooding in the Valencia area ever since the city's founding by the ancient Romans 2200 years ago. The previous severe flooding event in the area (causing over 80 fatalities) occurred on 14 October 1957 and is (now ironically) known as the Great Flood of Valencia: following that latest repeated devastating flood, General Franco ordered the southward diversion of the Turia River to reduce the impact of future heavy flooding on the city of Valencia and that work was completed in the late '60s. The area of Valencia lies on the coast at sea level and is almost completely surrounded by hills. It is effectively a flood plain for the historically notorious Turia River. A short academic paper titled *"Increased risk of flooding on the coast of Alicante (Region of Valencia, Spain)"* published in 2010 *specifically* addresses the huge levels of avaricious property development and consequent population increase in the area and how that exacerbates flood risks and flood outcomes. The concluding paragraphs of the paper make for some very sobering reading indeed. The appaling and growing list of fatalities resulting from this latest in a very long line of catastrophic inundations was sadly and it seems accurately predicted by the authors of the paper 14 years ago.
Why relying on phone alerts when many people disable them and some people have (voluntary or not) no smartphone. A loudspeaker siren, with a specific sound depending on the nature of the danger, would be much more effective and taken seriously. Or vehicles criss-crossing the city with loudspeakers. But there has to be a will to protect the population...
I checked my brand new phone and weather alerts were set to 'off' from the factory. I suspect others were in the same situation. At any rate, the warnings came and people either tried to leave or save their cars, which proved to be a fatal error.
A lot of floods have occurred in many areas recently. A common factor is heavy rainfall in a short period. This may indicate that more severe weather may be on the way.
Water meters were not working since weeks, and farmers have been warning about it, but no one listened. Also, dams have been demolished in the past few years thanks to the Ministerio de Transición ecológica (a real joke). How is this possible? We are just in hands of the worst in the worst moment.
For a real eye-opener, check the educational background of the people running Valencia- some didn't finish high school. They are very good at shirking responsibility when things go sideways.
Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai eruption The amount of water vapor ejected was 10 percent of the stratosphere's typical stock. It was enough to temporarily warm the surface of Earth. It is estimated that an excess of water vapour should remain for 5-10 years.
The Spanish Government should have consulted Eliza Doolittle. She would have provided them with the necessary advice: “The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain.” Then residents on the plain could have been advised to move to higher ground when long periods of rain were forecast.
Here in Madrid we always look at the weather in our mobiles if it rains or has tormenta and we know. But people are really not looking , that's the problem.😢
It was the president of the Autonomous Community who failed to raise the alarm on time and he shouldn't have dismantled the Valencia Military Emergency Unit. He's responsible for most lives lost but won't resign. They never do.
How times have changed. Before the storm came, passed, clean up ensued, and people waited another 100 years for the next one. Today, the storm comes, passes, while cleaning up (you are told not to, because round two is a couple of days away), round two comes, clean up ensues and a couple of years later the cycle repeats.

Il pleut à verse, vous ne voyez pas la route et vous continuer de rouler ou bien vous vous arrêtez? Bravo!
Glad you are well 🙏🙏🙏
Thank God you are safe 🙏🏽
I hope you have arrived in Toledo. Stay safe. ~From a Singaporean
a horrendous thing to happen!

A valencian citizen here. The flooding was coming from inland mountanous villages and towns like in the 1957's devastating flooding. However, this time 'round Valencia city escaped unharmed due to the 'Plan Sur' which channeled the riverbed further south. Hence the flooding encountered a barrier and the worst affected area was Valencia city's hinterland: Paiporta, Alfafar, etc☔🌧️🌊
In 1957, 81 lives were lost.

@@h5mind373 They already said insurance and compensations are available for everyone with an insurance policy to claim.

Exactement! Merci!

Welcome to Spain.

This alert of the universities, was gave at 11:00am
So in the end, the responsibles of his failure were the Regional Government of Valencia, because they are responsibles for sending those alert messages on the phones. And also some business owner, who insisted to their employees going to work when some of them where well known about the risk of the Dana
Spanish warning system did not fail, Valencian Community president did :) This is something afecting Valencia, not the whole country.
🌟MY PRAYERS TO SPAIN 🇪🇸
Hmmm....the warning also came too late for East Tennessee and North Carolina in the U.S. for Hurricane Helene. There seems to be a theme here.
HALF A METER rain in 8hrs or so is not easily soaked, specially when it hits drought toughened soil and mountains.
The only real way to lessen these extreme events is:
STOP BURNING FOSSIL FUELS.
The actual path to lessen the damage in the future is building better water management and alarm systems.
this is so true. if the forests were left intact, this wouldn’t have happened.
Spanish urban areas are 100% edge to edge concrete, there is nowhere for the water to go, every Spanish city is vulnerable to this.

May the victims of this terrible tragedy Rest In Peace 😔💔

Clima change🤣😂😅
Another flash flooding, in the exact same area in Valencia, took place in 50s, circa 70 years ago. Flooding is a natural event that used to happen before the climate change, too... just saying. Climate change driven or not, it's not that relevant... the only relevant point is that a lot of lessons about careless behaviour, complacency, etc need to be learnt after hundreds of people died last week in Valencia. Because unfortunately last week, although the flooding event was known to the civil protection and the meteorological institute the day before, well in advance, the first warning was given 2 HOURS AFTER the flooding had occurred.
From valencia,We have regular flash floods their called gotafria here so when this storm started we all just believed it was another gotafria.
Regular flash floods because the Valencia region lies on the River Turia's flood plain.
It is all Sánchez and his friends fault. All of it.
The warning system seemed to be hit and miss, I got multiple messages last week with warnings, yet yesterday I received another 3 days too late

Why relying on phone alerts when many people disable them and some people have (voluntary or not) no smartphone.
