The 8v Mk2 Golf had 112 bhp (114 lbft), not 115. It was never a rocket ship even when new. However, on this video the Golf's launch was weak, looked like it bogged down, or the driver was being gentle - and given that it only had 1000 miles on it, I suspect it was rather tight. It may have been short shifted a little too - difficult to tell. 8v redline was 6,500 rpm or thereabouts. I suspect a more enthusiastic driver and a car with circa 60k miles on it would have given the Up a little more competition. That said, it's unlikely VW would want a 30 year old Golf to show up their current car, so a little creative directing was probably in play to make the Golf look worthy, but ultimately not quite so quick. ;) As comments below would attest, a 16v Golf of that era, or even one of the early K-Jetronic versions of the 8v (rather than this 'softer' digifant injected version) would have eaten the Up.
Renault 5 Turbo & Peugeot 205 1.9 GTi were the motors to have for outright speed. The Golf MK2 falls about mid way between the 1.6 and 1.9 205 GTi's. The 1.6 would have put in about the same performance as this MK2 with a good driver. The start off the line in this video was poor, the MK2 driver backed off after dumping the clutch where if he'd have kept it pinned it wouldn't have lost that much momentum from wheelspin.
I think this shows what I thought as soon as the specs of the Up were released- it's a bit of a missed opportunity. Give it 140hp and let it compete with the Ecoboost Fiesta/ Swift. What a riot that would be.
comedyman112 I agree there’s the Polo for the Fiesta. Also my fav car of all time is GTI and I know that most GTI fans state that MK2 is the best, nothing is perfect
True, the Renault is apparently excellent in that tiny car segment. ^ talking about the 1.0 Fiesta, the 'warm' hatch segment, which Ford seems to have cornered now. They'll give you seats with some side bolsters too, unlike VW. For me the Mk1 and 2 in terms of pure aesthetic design are perfect, just spot on. Compared the mess of a blobfish here in red.
I drive a 60HP Up. It may be slow as hell but it holds corners really well and is superbly fun to drive. I may get the GTI one day, which I suspect pushes the envelope of what the Up chassis can actually handle towards the edge. The lower powered models don’t and you can throw them into corners at alarming speeds while still nailing the throttle.
After all these years the old GTI lost compression for sure, so it is not a fair battle. What i can say is that that old car still looks awesome, and brought me a lot of memories.

Great video! How about a Mk7.5 Golf GTI Performance vs S2000. Similar power to weight, would make a really close race!
Should have pulled a Boba Motoring Golf mk2
Hahahaha duuuude,I was about to say the same thing!
@@georgestam1710 Hahahahaha
Not a popular result. It just goes to show that acceleration isn't just a factor of power to weight, torque to weight is also a factor.
That said, I'd still love to have a Mk2 Golf again, especially as clean as that one.
The MK2 still looks timeless amazing opposite that Up shit.
Nostalgia is an amazing thing..
@@TheSpudlyMcgudly It's not always the case. A lot of people don't like the over bloated and heavy look of most modern cars. The visibility also suffer the fat design of today
I might be a little biased, considering my profile pic is Mk.2, but comparing a turbo car to an n/a is not quite fair. The Golf when it was new had 3 less horses and like 30Nm less torque and at least a 100Kgs heavier. Plus the Up!s torque is at a lower RPM.
Never disrespect a Golf 2 like this again! 🙁
Disrespect ? In what way ?
I wonder how a 16V would compare. Either way, you can stick your up, right up. I'll take the Mk2, thank you very much.
Vw caddy vs Peugeot partners please❤❤
very cool! miss my 88 16v. first vw back in the day and never looked back
they both definitely beat new Tesla roadster
Great sarcasm!!!
Of course they will. They are both real cars. They can easily beat a fictional one.
A true petrol-head Yeah mate, electric cars are shit.
So shit infact that the new Golf GTE absolutely DOMINATES the Golf GTI in every way, shape and form... 😂
@@ThatsMrMaxHeadroomToYou golf gte is a hybrid. E golf is the electric car. And it loses to the gti in every way
@A true petrol-head I completely agree
Welcome to test it against my 90 golf 3 door gti 16v - engine rebuilt last year & it’s pretty tidy
Tell the driver of the mk2, to be more aggressive. 3.5k rpm. Jump off the clutch and mash the trottle...by by up.
Exactly how I used to launch mine, no need to back off the throttle with a bit of spin like this driver did.
Yeah, but thats is not is 30 year old GTI. Its from someone else who gentle give it for this litle test
I want to see a drag race between the Polo G40, Fiat Uno Turbo, Renault 5 Turbo, Fiesta XR2i, Charade Gti, Swift Gti, 106 Rallye etc... that would be really cool, but probably also impossible
I'd still rather have the mk2 golf.
Do the Skoda vRS drag race together with Skoda Fabia I vRS 1.9 TDI 130 HP vs Fabia II vRS 1.4 TSI 180 HP vs Octavia I vRS 1.8T 20V 180 HP vs Octavia II vRS 2.0 TSI 200 HP vs Octavia III vRS 2.0T 245 HP vs Kodiaq vRS 2.0 BiTDI 240 HP
I would love to see a collab with doug demuro
I only watch these videos because Mat is HILARIOUS!!!! He always makes me laugh.
well, take the 16 valve version with 138 HP and the Up will be left for dead :)
That's not the point,it's testing cars of a similar weight and power
Owned both and back then Golf GTIs was like owning a Focus RS now. 0 - 60 in 8 secs was considered very quick.
Daihatsu Charade gtti 1977 , 3 Zylinder , 101 PS 0 - 100 km = 8,1 Sekunden
Vw up gti 2018, 3 Zylinder, 115 PS
0 -100 kmh = 8,8 Sekunden
Schlapp VW Up
The mk2 needs setting up. 18secs 1/4 is hopeless and definitely slower than the figures recorded back in the day. I tuned my 8v with a 2L block, big valve flowed head & schrick cam & that was good for 7.4 0-60 & sub 16sec 1/4m. Very good for its day
factory new the golf would have smoked that up
No it wouldn’t
I feel the pain with my old Bimmer... E36 328i Convertible, 2.8 Straigth-6 engine sounding better than most things on the road, yet any new mid-tier diesel or 1.6-2l petrol will smash me in family cars. Oh well.
ModHunter rebuild it and itll be better than before
But will the Up's engine last as long as the MKII's did?
Maintain and service it and it will last just fine, just like any other car (for the most part)
Dunno why there's this stupid myth about these smaller engines being unreliable junks. Just isn't true
Good to see the comparison of some more 'normal' dare I say everyday cars. I wonder if the Up will be a classic? That Golf still looks modern and fresh. Great design.
This is the slowest race on UA-cam haha
boba motoring: me golf go brrr
That version of Golf GTI did 0-100 km/h in 9,7 sec. So in this test golf did it very well. I had one. Really good car. Very good gearbox.
Race a Renault 5 gt turbo :)
I just enjoy seeing your face having a good time! good videi
Mat Watson please review SEAT Ateca 1.4 TSI
He already did
Vw Golf MK2 what a legend ❤ its the best better then VW up! 😂
That Mk2 launch was terrible.
My old Golf...!
But both beaten by the geriatric special Jazz 1.5 Sport - 1/4 mile 16.84 secs...
(not to mention the moose test)
Plz review Mazda cars 😏
Mazda messed up the Mazda cars... The MPS the last Mazda car that had fun... I drive a CX5 Akera now yet im not having fun... Service is crap
What did you time this race with? A sun dial?
