    A superb source for the complete text of Hávamál is David A. H. Evans' edition of the poem, available for free (as of Aug., 2018) as a .pdf file from the publisher at www.vsnrweb-publications.org.uk/Text%20Series/Havamal.pdf (EDIT: I'm told this link isn't working on some computers; you might try just selecting this book from the menu at www.vsnrweb-publications.org.uk/ ).

    All the best wishes and happy birthday, Dr. Crawford!
    Det er den draumen me ber på
    at noko vedunderleg skal skje,
    at det må skje -
    at tidi skal opna seg
    at hjarta skal opna seg
    at dører skal opna seg
    at berget skal opna seg
    at kjeldor skal springa -
    at draumen skal opna seg,
    at me ei morgonstund skal glida inn
    på ein våg me ikkje har visst um.
    May everything open up to you, too, and lead you to the new, unknown bay.
    Thank you very much for this amazing video. This was the first, but it surely won't be the last time I listened to this. And I'd like to add how much I enjoyed the moody change in exposure caused by the setting sun.

    I ask this here because I don´t know where else to ask:
    In the late 90s I had a computer recording of an old man singing from Havamal.
    As I remember it it was from verse 76 and onwards.
    It was several computers ago and can´t seem to find it.

    To my ears it sounds a little flat compared to the pitch accent we have in scandinavian languages today - especially Norwegian. Surely they had it back then as well?

    • @LeValLife
      @LeValLife 5 років тому +6

      Because this isn’t casual, spoken word. It was never written to be said in conversation. Pitch in any accent is a communicative tool. Plus, he doesn’t have a Scandinavian accent, it wouldn’t make sense for him to try and mimic one. I live in Sweden and when the swedes speak English to me, they retain their Swedish accent, just as I retain my English one when speaking Swedish.

    • @MayhemCause
      @MayhemCause 5 років тому +2

      @@LeValLife this poem was likely composed as spoken word, not a thing to be read silently, or at all for that matter. It would have been performed by a skald, likely with pitching, and in a more song-like manner, the same way works like the Ilyad would have been. But yeah, he's reading this out so that its clear and he doesn't really have an accent and doesn't know how it would have been performed.

    It’s a little stronger than your last reading, I like it, it kind of reminds me of a show I watch outlander on the network stars, I think the characters are in Scotland, Ireland and are speaking Viking... I feel like I’m hearing some similarities but there are certain areas in your speaking that are definitely not the same. I think our time differences is drastic, I’m going to go to sleep but I will listen to the rest of it after I sleep. Have a good day!✨🕊🔥✨

    Question I'm transliterating the first part in to runes. When it says því the translator spells ᛏᚺᚢᛁ in runes but shouldn't it be thurisaz þ still or does that change when it is at the beginning of the word in runes??

    • @logi-a
      @logi-a 5 місяців тому

      Interesting that it would give you that. I along with every other Icelander have had to study about this stuff and as far as I’m aware of þorn or þuss as it was called back the. doesn’t have that as a rune. It might be confusing it with þorn’s völvurún but I think it should just be a simple thurisa
