Hi I took apart my ps4 slim and there was barley any dust build up and I cleaned the fan. After I put it back and put on a game not doing anything the fan went up like crazy
That should not have happened. Something might have gone wrong in the cleaning process. If you took apart the heatsink from the processor you have to change the thermal paste as well. If not, maybe have your console checked out by a specialist.
This is by far the best PS4 slim cleaning video out there. So many others are making it worse by removing both plates from the motherboard, when there really isn't any need to. Thanks for this 👍

I was just nodding along thinking, oh I can do this... Until you get to removing the power supply and whoa, that's a bit too scary for me. Is it worth it to just open the top and bottom cover and then clean whatever dust is visible/reachable from there? That's probably the limit of what I'm confident enough to do by myself. Or should I not do it all? :(
I saw some videos where people just blow air into the consoles air vents without taking anything apart. I guess that if you can get rid of any dust particle inside you console would be better than leaving it there. But if you are not confident opening your console or if you are scared you could break something maybe it would be better to take your console to a professional and get it cleaned properly. Good luck!!!
This video helped me to clean my crusty ps4 but you should've used a beter camera angle because it was pretty confusing the view from the side but I still managed to clean this old computer before I get a ps5
At 8:32 you said we can remove the black plastic pins but it can affect the integrity, would the screws be enough for it to be in place as I’m not sure if i should do that my PS4 Slime is dusty in the fan and heat sync
The plastic pins can only be removed by braking them. I haven’t done that. In order to get to the heatsink without breaking the pins you have to work a little more and unscrew a few more screws (like I did in the video). So it is possible to clean everything without cutting the plastic pins.
Pro Tip: with the help of a $20 3D Printing Pen, you can actually reattach those little plastic “warranty seal” pieces if you’re skilled enough. Just a fun little bit o’ advice for my fellow DIYers who also still want to maybe use their warranty for whatever reason.

@@LifeHackerMax thanks for the video! I live quite dusty country, i live in Caribbean and so my porch door is always open and thus lots of dust. Hey man! Maybe something happened when you connected the ribbons. Make sure each ribbon is in the right spot, inserted enough to make contact with the pins and the orientation is ok (right side up). If you pulled on one of the ribbons and the copper inside is damaged, you might need to replace that ribbon to fix the issue.
The main power socket should be disconnected first. As long as you don’t damage the ribbons, wires when connecting/disconnecting them, you should be ok. All the information is stored in a hard drive like the one you have in your Laptop 💻. The information on the storage device will not be harmed by unplugging the connectors. 👍🏼 Good Luck! Follow the video and you should be fine.
When I did the cleaning I didn’t think that a thermal paste change was needed. Dust cleaning is better done more often than the thermal paste so I took them as two different dishes and chose to serve only one. Thinking about changing the paste soon and making a video on that as well 😀.
@@Esperance680 I hope you find the right tutorial to get you through the change. Thank you for taking the time to write. Feedback is always appreciated. I hope to make that video soon 😊.
I got a over heat warning took it apart use some white thermo past i don't now if that okay But got it back together and once the gane starts fan sounds loud and shuts down
If whatever you did didn’t fix the problem, maybe it is time to take it to the PlayStation Doctor in town. If some of the chips get fried you might end up with an unusable PS4. I didn’t get to open mine to the point of changing the thermal paste. You might need some professional thermal paste refresh (change). Good luck Ranger!
Thank you for the nice and clear instructions but I’m still not confident taking my ps4 apart just to clean it. Don’t want to break it or mess it up by accident. 😅
I know how you feel. It took me ages to get the courage to open up mine 🤭. There is always the option to get it cleaned by a professional, or just opening up the lid to analyze how dirty the fan is.
It's a very well made video, but, in my humble opinion, it's missing one very important step that some might wnat to do and would help most of the PS4's out there to keep working cool for a couple more years. You should include removing and replacing the thermal paste on the APU, for this subjet to be complete. Other than that, great work.
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment! You are right, the subject is not complete without the thermal paste change. On the other hand when making this tutorial I made the conscious decision to leave out the thermal paste change because not everyone that will follow this tutorial will be able to perform the procedure and might end up ruining their console. And even though I am doing my best to add disclaimers in my videos there is still an ethical responsibility that I feel for my viewers. Also I consider the two procedures separate because as a good practice it is recommended to clean the hardware from dust every 6 months or so while the thermal paste change can be done once in 2-3 years. So it is still ok for some to do the dust cleanup and once every 6 procedures take the console to a professional for a thermal paste change. That was the logic behind me not adding the TP change in the video.
Retrace your steps. As long as you didn’t damage anything in the process it is most likely that you missed something while putting everything back together. It happens to me all the time 🤭. Best bet: watch the video again and take it all apart step by step until you find whatever plug you missed. I hope you figure it out. Good luck 🍀.
@@LifeHackerMax thank you so much, while i was assembling it back i forgot to connect the wire that connected the power on button, works great and quiet now thanks to you
Usually, when this happens to me I retrace every step and see what I missed: a socket, a ribbon placed wrongly or any other thing. If things still don’t work, I think about getting whatever I am working on to a professional. I hope you can figure things out. Good luck 🍀.
I always test my ideas before I make a video. The first time I cleaned my PS4 I didn’t think to record the process and the second time (when I made the video) I cleaned it I didn’t wait for the console to get that much dust inside to get the fan in overdrive so I couldn’t record the noise. The point is to clean your console regularly before you get it to make loud noises.
The power supply plug is tight. If you got all the screws out, you should be ok. Try to pull it vertically though. If I remember correctly, I got the same feeling as you the first time I took it out.

What do I do if I don’t have the Philips phone-0
You can try using a small flat screwdriver. Or you can try breaking the pin with a flat screwdriver and a hammer. It is not easy but it is doable.
Thanks. You saved my PlayStation.
Nice vid
This video helped me so much, there was much more dust than i thought, only thing is that now it doesn't turn on lol,any help?
Retrace your steps. As long as you didn’t damage anything in the process it is most likely that you missed something while putting everything back together. It happens to me all the time 🤭. Best bet: watch the video again and take it all apart step by step until you find whatever plug you missed. I hope you figure it out. Good luck 🍀.
@@LifeHackerMax thank you so much, while i was assembling it back i forgot to connect the wire that connected the power on button, works great and quiet now thanks to you
@@vitospizzico3209 glad you figured it out. Happy gaming! 😀
My ps4 now wont turn on
Usually, when this happens to me I retrace every step and see what I missed: a socket, a ribbon placed wrongly or any other thing. If things still don’t work, I think about getting whatever I am working on to a professional. I hope you can figure things out. Good luck 🍀.
Why you not show the fan noise bevor and after ?
I always test my ideas before I make a video. The first time I cleaned my PS4 I didn’t think to record the process and the second time (when I made the video) I cleaned it I didn’t wait for the console to get that much dust inside to get the fan in overdrive so I couldn’t record the noise. The point is to clean your console regularly before you get it to make loud noises.
@@LifeHackerMax Fine 👍 happy my Console even after 8 years dosent have such dust it depends probely how the console is exposed and wich room etc
My ps4 stuck and my tv screen became black.can anyone tell me what happened
My power supply connector is stuck very tightly, i fear that if i pull too much i'll break It, what should i do?
The power supply plug is tight. If you got all the screws out, you should be ok. Try to pull it vertically though. If I remember correctly, I got the same feeling as you the first time I took it out.
@@LifeHackerMax Wait, just to clarify im not talking about the big plug but the small cable, anyway, thanks for the quick answer!
@@Dioniso_ If I am not making a mistake the small cable can be disconnected from both sides. If you can’t take one side try the other. Good luck!
@@LifeHackerMax Got It, thank youuuu
