Weird lens reviews: Holga pinhole lens 38mm f/152 (HPL-C)

- Here's another super cheap Holga lens, this time, with absolutely no optics whatsoever. For those of you who are as lazy as I am and can't be bothered to make your own pinhole lens, here's one you can actually buy. The biggest question really, like with other Holga lenses, is is it fun? Welcome to the second in a short series on HOLGA lenses!

Hello. Not sure if you still have this lens, but I was able to fix the contrast level on mine with a Sharpie.
The problem: The plastic in which they made the pinhole was too thin and slightly transparent, so light bleeds through that to the sensor, washing out your photos.
The solution: Darken the plastic material with a sharpie on both sides so that light cannot bleed through the plastic. My photos went from completely washed out to the classic slightly faded 70s look.
Haha imagine this with teleconverters..... 200mm f/5000
Matt W Hah hah hah ha... It may worth a try : ))))
Woodepic Media I really want to see that hahaha
Exposure time: 2 years.
The slogan for this lens should be "How much dust do you have on your sensor?" lol, really the photos from this lens remind me of the near out of focus shots I used to get on those disposable point and shoot film cameras in the 90s.
I know, isn’t it awful? Why can’t they make the mount fit as well as a four-dollar body cap?
Hmm I wonder what DXOmark will give this one.
Heh heh
when it has got a nikon mount, DXOmark gonna say its super sharp!
LOL
0 MP sharpness.
High marks if they were the one that made it. Like they did with their terrible smartphone camera.
I will get it for astrophotography...
Good luck trying to see the sun.
At least the entire universe will be in focus :D
Looks like you could get some "antique" looking shots by using this with sepia tone. Might be worth a try.
That's why at least kind of cameras back in the day had a whole bunch of strong flashes
I think that to celebrate the 1st of April in a spectacular way you should make one of those popular "Lens X vs Lens Y" videos, matching one of these Holga lenses against some spectacular product, like the Sigma 35mm f1.4 or Canon 85mm f1.2. And of course the ideal conclusion for such a comparison done on the 1st of April should be:"Yes, the Canon/Sigma is clearly sharper, but can it match the artistic value of the Holga? No, of course it can't".
Thanks Chris...That was great. I appreciate the laugh on a Friday morning. Loved the comments about the "New and fascinating world of dust on your sensor" and the "Softer than a padded swimming pool full of marshmallows and teddy bears". LOL...Great stuff.
To be clear, this is not a lens. It is a pinhole. It is meant to be soft! If you want sharp, use a glass lens!
love your videos and the way you describe things! good work!
An informative review, thank you. Your experience and comments reflect my own on Pentax APS-C bodies: soft images lacking contrast (which improved a bit with added contrast, exactly as you present in your review). I bought this lense circa 2015 after some time using Holga's 60 mm lense and the wide-angle adaptor. At some point, I'll make my own pinhole lense using a spare body cap - perhaps achieving a smaller aperture might slightly improve sharpness. (We'll see) Cheers.
I dunno, for any sort of art project this seems super cool actually. I kinda wanna get my hands on this
I love the old-fashioned video capabilities of this lens!
Im still trying to grasp the concept of buying a lens to take shitty pictures on purpose.
Lomography
hey, wouldn't pinhole lenses have 0 barrel distortion?
Should do - TBH I didn't check!
Yes, zero any distortion.
Very cool. Though I think you could do this with an extra camera cover (the thing that comes on a DSLR that comes with no lens), and a drill with a tiny bit.
I like this little lens. It gives very nice and soft pictures.
If you like soft pictures, then this is the lens for you!
I made a pinhole lens once and liked the look when I used flash for some low-key shots:) if it has tons and tons of light pin hole lenses can look interesting to me haha
One good use for this lens: checking your camera sensor for dust!
Urgh, I HATE sensor dust
If you reduce the ISO and slow down the shutter speed, will the photos still look washed out and smooth?
Sure - you'll need a tripod, though
Actually I find this lens very usable for artsy black and white photos! I use very high ISOs (like 25000 or so) and change the colour saturation to zero in the photo editing software. And... if you have extension tubes then you can combine them with this pinhole lens for a TELEPHOTO pinhole lens!!! I think that's cool indeed!!! Anyway cheers Chris, I like you reviews... :)
I have a Reisling (spelling?) version of this. They’re fun to play with. I could have made my own but too lazy. Plus I’d need to order a spare body cap... someday!
Christopher, seems to me that you either have to clean your sensor, or you have a few dead pixels :). A big fan of your review, keep them coming :) .
Chris, will you be reviewing the new 100-400, or the new Sigma 150-500 Sport?
Best lens for low light!
could you do the new Canon 24-105 3.5-5.6 STM on your 70D?
Hi Christopher, perhaps try a made (lazer drilled) body cap pinhole. They are for sale on Ebay and working very well. For about £10. They have different mounts and a f stop 167, 0,3mm pinhole and thickness of 0,002".
My first camera was a Kodak Ektra 200, the exposure time was "normal" the picture quality about the same, maybe a bit better.
It's quite compelling tbh for a bit of fun, especially looking at the video results. And it's not like it costs a lot of money for the IQ, or the lack there off.
ummm... there's kinda a lack of a piece of glass of this lens or with a coating so... no image quality to talk about here. But I would sure use this for some retro looking film for a project or two for the cheap if I got the chance.
Those sensor dusts~~ :D
@Nicholas Myrsep
Retro effects on a DSLR?
Thanks for sharing Chris, but my question is why?
This is the official lens of the bigfoot/sasquatch spotters club :)
Hispters gonna love that lens.
just enjoy it for what it is, use iso and shutter speeds and get something different, I love this little lens for a giggle
+Mixie Palms The only way even thinking about this lens could make me giggle is the idea of it being used as a hockey puck.
Hey dude, now you've tested both the holga and the thingyfy pinhole lens and i wonder how big the quality difference between the two is. I hope you can help me, I really like the vintage look of those lenses and want to try them on street photography. Do you think the holga does the job or is the difference between the two so big that you would definatly suggest the thingyfy one? Hope you can help me, thank you.
Honestly, they're both as bad as each other hehe! Bear in mind that, the mirrorless camera version of the Thingyfy lens can give a far wider angle.
It's so soft. Have you tried stopping it down further? Hahaha
Please do the canon 28-300mm lens.
3:35-3:40 Both of your cameras have a hot pixel in almost the same spot? Interesting. Also, unless you are masking those out, your 7D has well less hot pixels than my T2i. I've got like 50 or so, and a lot show up in video over iso 400. I'll see a ton of tiny ones in iso 200 photos at 30 seconds, but those should be easy to mask out.
It looks kinda awesome actually. Looks like you shot it on a film camera
+AirsoftWarfareHD nope, film cameras can shoot amazing pictures, large format and some medium format cameras can produce images that greatly surpass 35mm sensors, and some of the sharpest lenses on the world are only available for view cameras and Leica (film/digital) mounts. It has nothing to do with film or digital.
Bruno Santini Thanks for your input. I don't recall ever saying that it has surpasses or come to the quality of a film camera. I simply said it gives off a look of a film camera.
Waiting for my 700d so I might as well just watch lens videos.
I would actually not say that this lens has a huge depth of field, or really a depth of field at all. A huge depth of field means that there is no blurriness...that any blur is of a circle of confusion smaller than a pixel. With this lens, everything is blurry, so in all honesty, an shooting a lens at f/11 would have a greater depth of field than shooting this "hole" at f/152. Anyway, nice video!
Rationalific Having a huge depth of field means that more things are in focus backwards and forwards (2/3 and 1/3) relative to your focal point. You could still have a huge depth of field but misfocus, and get blurry results.
Anyhow, the blurriness here is caused by diffraction, as there are no optical elements to blame.
+KuronoXD The circle of confusion is completely determined by the diameter of the pinhole, its distance from the image sensor and its distance from the object being viewed. Diffraction does not enter into the equation at all.
I really want this lens just to make some cool looking "vintage" photographs. Good thing it's only $25.
25 dollars can get you kit lens from ebay. With glass diaphragm and even AF. This thing's real price is 1 dollar at most. :D You can just take a piece of paper or plastic or whatever. Punch a small hole into it and tape it onto your camera and you get the same picture.
yeah uniq with dust effect on ccd :v
Pentax K-01 works great... live view works to frame shot, no issue.
Perfect lens for hipsters :D It looks like footage from the early 70s.
Only buy for see how much dust is on your sensor:)
It makes everything look really... 80s cheapo camera style. I suppose if that's what you're into, it's worth it.
This is the best option to emulate 8 mm film.
3:25 looks like a security cam footage from 1978. What's the point of this lens? I dont think i'd even want it for free
i actually have this lens. Its interesting to say the least
Video looks like S-Log. I guess all the vloggers will use this now.
3:42 just add a variable ND... :)
I tried pin hole photography for the first time DIGITALLY. And my results are as bad as yours. But I've done it with film and I get a wayyy better image. Is there any reason this could be happening?
No idea
This would be reasonable if ti cost 0,1 dollar. But the Holga wants astonishing 30 dolars for literally plastic hole with EF mount. :D
Discover how dusty your sensor is... LOL
Interesting... If it has no glass, is it still a lens?
does a lens need to be made of glass? the one in your eye is made of fluid
***** Fair point, but can a lens be made of air like this one? Isn't it just an aperture?
Jon Page I think a lens is something that bends light. so a pinhole per definition isn't one, you're right
Hum... In your vídeos, why the cars ever are in the wrong way of the streets? 🤔
In the UK we drive on the left
well on the bright side, no glass = no flaring. so...
Incorrect: 3:44
i guess if your mark for a good photo is gauged by "perfection: than this lens might not be for you. I enjoy the softness, and do not mind it picking up dust on your lens, though you should clean it. i think pin hole lens photography isnt about being "perfect"
cool
this lens better cost like $10 or i dont think ill ever get it
This is the kind of lens popular with conspiracy theorists.
Were back in the 1920's? Lol.
20$ seems like alot of money for soething that you can make yourself just by poking a hole in a body.cap? Always like seeing the weird lens reviews though
Oh look, it's Lana del Rey's lens that she uses in all her videos!
So pretty much a waste of money
and thats why pinhole is never ever famous in photography
