I also pulled up and cleaned up most my spring vegetables over the last few weeks. My first northern FL garden was a learning experience. I need to amend the soil more and stay on top of the bugs better, but I got a decent harvest. The leaves on my okra are getting eaten by something, but the sweet potatoes grown in tubs were prolific. Time to learn about growing a FL fall second crop.

Gardening in Florida is learning experience... sandy soil, strong sun, rain and sometimes drought. You'll get the hang of it! Thank you for sharing!

@@AnoleGarden I found the largest grasshopper I've ever m on my life crawling up an okra stem yesterday. (Biblical plague size -- seriously at least 6" long and fatfatFAT). The 2nd biggest grasshopper I've ever seen was riding on its back. I guess that's where all the leaves went.

Based on your description, those are probably Eastern Lubber Grasshoppers. They can be pretty freaky if you're not used to them (note: Jonathan is totally creeped out by them). They will eat LOTS of leaves as both young or adults. As young, they are usually black with yellow stripes and gather in very large groups. As adults, they don't tend to swarm as much, but are usually bright yellow or orangish. The young can be easily scooped up and tossed into a bucket of soapy water. The adults, not so much... adults can spray an irritant that can cause different reactions, but mostly just itches. As adults, whack them with a broom or something to knock them down, then step on them (boots recommended). If you're not up for that, cover plants you want to save with some kind of mesh or net to keep the lubbers off it.

@@AnoleGarden Yes, I looked it up, and that's what they were. (And, apparently when one was on the other one's back, they were mating. Ick. I don't want to think about it, 😂.) I'll definitely watch for them next year.

Love the tour. It gives me ideas for transitioning my garden for the fall. What do you guys use for the pipes that your trellises and shade cloth are attached to? It looks really nice and I would love to use that in my setup.
