We're tackling an 6ft modular trenchline system to wrap up our Lets Make Battlefield Basic Series. In this video we look at detailing the slope surface and trench walls as well as texture coating the bunker / pillbox and putting in the fire steps.
I've been asked a lot if this is 40k, Bolt Action or generic 28mm terrain and the truth is, it's more about the actual techniques than a specific wargaming system. If I show you the techniques, you can make modular trenches for whatever gaming system you want! ;-)

I've had requests for muddy puddles and duckboards for the trench floor. Any other requests for the next stage of detailing before we get stuck in to the painting and flocking stages? You got till I'm back tackling the beast on Monday to get your requests in folks!
Hey Mel, you quite often see trenches with some boards going across the top of them to allow troops to walk from one side of the above ground to another.
Another thing is the trenches were often reinforced using whatever was available at the time, this occasionally included a fallen comrade, the Staffordshire Regiment Museum had an arm sticking out of their trench mock-up.
Would love to see some of this incorporated into your designs. Love your videos and look forward to the next update!
I'd say the corrugated wall on the backside of the trenches should be riddled with bullet and shrapnel holes. I'd also like to see some tiny craters from hand grenades and small mortars near the ramparts. These can be built up with coarse sand and left empty of flock.
Looking damn fine, btw.
You could add coms cables, stowage, boxes etc as details. Bits of tarp/cloth could be added as shelter. You could have put a small hole in the trench wall to represent a dugout, I know it is probably too late, but I thought that it was a cool idea.
If possible:
a) a part of collapsed trench wall
b) underground tunnel
c) ladders to go over the top!
Love your work keep going ahead! Never lose your excitement and love for the hobby!
I would also put some sandbags where the trench has been breached as some makeshift repairs.
I think I should say thank you. I've been watching this channel for two years now and while I'm not into war gaming, I am into crafting. These videos have shown me how to take simple, inexpensive materials and turn them into something beautiful and different than if I simply tried learned from scratch. Sadly, I have a very strict budget and some personal issues that i struggle to deal with, and making something goes so far to help me get by and keep moving forward. So again, Thank you for showing simple and cheap ways of being creative.
You aint alone there. LOTS of folks find terrain building to be good therapy. Kinda takes you away to your own little world, dont it? ;-)
Welcome to the club buddy
Trenches shaped like /_\ were really rare, most were shaped like a V becouse it is easyer to make and easier to shoot out of. With V shaped trenches there is also no danger of the wall collapsing when an arrilliry shell hits it.
this has to be the coolest project I've ever seen! just amazing. thanks for taking the time to document all this and sharing it
This popped up on my UA-cam and I thought to myself 'I can't spend over an hour watching terrain videos. . . '
Then two minutes into the first part of this build I was hooked. Mel, this is (yet again) another triumph; totally absorbing with modelling skills that are off the scale. Roll on part 3.
One of us, One of us ..... ;-D
i love the breaks with pics where we are upto now such a simple clever feature
Slowly getting better at this production malarky :-D
Awesome work as always Mel, I'm proud to support you :) it's worth it!
Cheers buddy, it's appreciated!
Mel, you're an absolute artist. Best to you and thanks for all you give.
Thanks buddy
This is an awesome set of tutorials. It’s sad when you get to the end as you have to wait for the next episode to come along. !! Back to your back catalogue methinks.
could be worse bud, I could have finished it on a cliff hanger lol
Mel, you're a true genius with this stuff. You make it look easy. But I've tried it and it isn't easy.
Just keep going mate
superb work so far! when I get my living room table back I'll have to give this a crack!
She's gonna kill you!
The man is back!
:-D
Love it. Keep going!!
Cheers
You had me giggling with your straight/curved firestep crack! I also love the little repaired section where the mortar has blown in a section of the outer wall. Besides muddy puddles and duckboards, I can't think of too much to add, but I have relatively little experience in trenches. I do love a few little easter eggs in terrain pieces though, maybe a hastily abandoned cup of tea somewhere? Perhaps a boot sticking out from under something? Tiny details like that are fun :)
Have you got any interest in the Necromunda re-release? The rules are only so-so, but the models are cool. Reason I mention it is, the "Zone Mortalis" tunnels system might be an interesting terrain project, being sort of modular, but essentially 2D. I'd love to see what you could come up with inside those constraints, and I'm sure those lessons would be applicable to many other game systems.
I've kinda lost interest in necromunda but found I real interest in shadow wars, so terrain wise, very similiar mate
Some really great stuff.
Thanks
AWESOME !!
Hiya Mel, Excellent tutorial! Waiting with baited breath for the next tutorial. Hope all is well with you & Family? Kind Regards Johnny
All is well here, thanks buddy!
Awesome
Cant wait to see the end :D
Me too!
neat stufff sun day
lol...Bloody Rupert's your right there Mel.
;-)
Something else these trenches, they look amazing, though it's just me, I'd put the pillbox in front of the trenches, imagine the friendly fire from the pillbox, or it's ability to not fully support a squad in front of it, otherwise, amazing video
I like this
def my next project just a lil different(I found that small pencil torches and torch lighters make good crater holes in polystyrene sheets
I need to yet a small torch!
i love this , i need to make this for 40k !
Do it!
Happy 2018 and Nice work bud , you have dug deep on this one:) . How far are you going with this as the level of detail can be endless???
I've given myself till the end of the month, so we'll find out by then but I'm already ripping out sections of the fire step mate lol
Nice a new vid thanks love your vids
Cheers bud
You made me start modeling, I am now doing my homemade flock, trees ad so on, the thing is that I had miniatures in 1/72 scale. So when you did your sandbags, they would have been to big for me. Do you have any idea what measurements i will use for 20 mm Soldiers. Sry if I spelled anything wrong!
theminiaturespage.com/ref/scales.html
wow man your literally the best!!!
I'm not a gamer, but this did give me an idea for a diorama. Good work!
Is that lobster on the wall behind you?
LOL
Pretty sure that's the grip a sword
You are correct! I didn't notice the sword blade before you mentioned it!
All about dat dipping
Hi, lovin it so far, can I ask how wide and deep are the trenches please.
many thanks
I was a little surprised you didnt run a bead of PVA down the foam before you mooshed the DAS onto it. I didnt know it would stick itself so well.
Oh, those 3/4" long boards you laid on top of the fire step, they are perpendicular to the trench line... Those are alot of work to cut and install. Wouldnt they just have used long planks running parallel to the trench line instead? At least where the trench is straight? But thats just me thinking. You're the one that did the research. I suppose its a matter of how hastily the trench was built.
Lookin' good so far Mel. I'm waiting to see all the little details you sneak into this build. Somebody mentioned communication cables. That would be a nice touch.
Water is enough with das mate. The boards were a lot of work but actually easier than going longwise due to the step being curved mate, I did consider it but discounted it for going perpendicular mate
Fantastic as usual, wouldn't expect anything less......could I add pvc glue to my clay to aid in the adhesion process, as mine seems to keep cracking and fallig off the bases?
Try wetting the surface first mate
Fantastic job! Is there a reason you didn't paint and flock some of the trench before adding the corrugation and planking?
I want the floor earth to lay up against the corrugated iron and so it needs to be laid down after the walls are done mate
Do you ever get a chance to play with all this amazing stuff you make?
Occasionally mate
you need a rework station young man,its a hot blower with small to large nozzles all included and temp adjustable i use it myself for what your doin n resin models that need bent back..
whats a rework station, got a link?
Where do you get the hot cutter from ,and which one is best ,excellent work ,top man.
Hot Wire Foam Factory matey
Many thanks.
Bunker strikes or damaged bunker would be good
Noted!
Hey Mal...what scale are you working in here..
1/56 or 28mm mate
That bunker is gonna shot the people I front of it and it's basically a bullseye for artillery.
It's for a game mate
is there any part 3? oh, ive seen, that this video is new... im a facepalm xD
Hopefully out on tuesday mate
What scale do you use??
28mm mate
K thanks
This is Bob Ross's brother isn't he?
Oh for his hair!
yaay, i'm #666 for likes!!
HAIL WARGAMING!
Crack on!
I'm working on some trenches based on your format ! For death corps of kreig ! I'll send pictures when its complete.
This is an ordinary styrofoam?
Yep
what you use to smooth the surface ? :\
Sandpaper mate
no
In the bucket what is this ?
