I'm seriously looking to getting into the "radio-world" and building a station in my 5th wheeler. Videos like this one make me itch to get started. But, I'm the kind of guy who like to learn as much as possible about what to do, how to do it, which rigs to purchase. etc. before I jump in!
With great sadness I must report the young man featured in this video, making his first contact on air, lost his father recently. He was a generous kind man that was more than gracious to us and made our trip unforgettable. Remember them in your prayers. 73
Nice to see someone on You Tube who does things like I do and nobody gets hurt. Well, when I do things, there are a few casualties. Hey, it's a learning process. LOL! I enjoyed the video.
I loved watching this video. You guys are awesome. You had me worried there for a bit when you said you weren't going to allow comments, so I'm glad to see you did allow them after-all. It was entertaining, educational, and even had an awesome first contact climax. I do have to admit though, I only clicked on it because the title implied you were building a crank-up tower. Turns out you were just 'mounting' it. -AF7OH
to get the rotor out, you simply cut one of the cross members of the tower, bend it out extract rotor, replace rotor with what ever one you want to use, then bend back cross member. You are putting a cheap rotor in place of a rotor that is more reliable HAM 4.
Reminds me of a tower my dad had back in the 60's I think it was a 60 Ft and with a 6m beam on top it stood 65 ft. I always thought it was funny that he had it guyed to the roof on the house and the roof on the garage...
have to admit I feared for ya'lls safety for most of the video. But seeing the youngun get excited about his contact made this worth the 41 minutes. 73
That's asome guy's, I think the only i would have added out riggers for base for better seaport of the tower in-case of wind or something in the IF category. probley use 2" square tube like the truck hitches. 73's
Fantastic video, y'all look like a hoot to hang out with. I'd love to have a setup like this, probably can't justify it until I upgrade from my tech license. 73 from TX.
What kind of repeater and simplex could you hit on 2 meters at that height? I built that 5 element dream beam and wow! What a fantastic antenna! I have it mounted in my attic at 16ft above ground level. I am able to have QSO's with about 50% reliability (fading in and out every couple of minutes) just about every night through a machine 137 miles from me. Those guys couldn't believe that I was only using 65 watts at 16 ft in the attic! I'd say it's 100% at about 80 miles 24/7. I really want to add an amplifier with a preamp and get it up 45ft in the clear. Should make a HUGE improvement!
I plan on doing something similar. I have a 14 foot enclosed trailer I want to mount a tower on. I just cant find a tower that's not on the other side of the country.
Greetings from Ireland..I have a 60ft tower and ive got some great ideas from this video to build it on a trailer..Keep up the DX 73 and HNY From Nicky/Ei9JF
Seldom, if ever do I see an old Alliance HD 73 rotor ! From what little I know about them, they use a cork material for a friction brake ! When you had the rotor opened up, I was hoping to see the brake material, but couldn't imagine where, or how big it might be ? As it looked like you were into it about as deep as you could be ! So was the brake mechanism removed ? Thanks and congrats !
Kit Crider Also, and this is just a question, have you given any thought to adding an inexpensive 12V winch to turn the tower crank? I have a TriEx W51 crank up tower that I will be adding a winch to to do that very thing.
Ya know, if ya spend sometime learning Sketchup, you can experiment with your ideas, and test them for fit, function, and location before you ever leave your seat...
that tower design ive wanted to build one like that for my place i dont like hights too much so i wanted to build a telescoping tower that would be pretty high since im surrounded by trees and id put guy wires up so when its at full extension it would have the wires tight but id love to know the plans for that sort of a tower you got there and or any tips you could give about designing a tower like that
I'm a cb opperator about to go for my foundation amateur licence in VK6 i'm enjoying researching all the videos on youtube before i take the plunge with a wia assesor . i'd like to build a settup like this myself as in my location i get rf interference from a faulty adsl modem in the unit next door. 73's from Victor Bravo 31 i'm usually on 11meters on frequency 273550 when i'm mobile.
Great video and awesome portable tower... I like your videos and am thinking of making an extreme dream 2 meter antenna (measured and tuned for 440)... Maybe a few stacked up in some sorta array.. I need to hit a UHF repeater just about 80 to 90 miles away up in the mountains.. I'm down in a hole.. the Rio Grande river basin.. I don't think a 150 ft tower would give me line of sight.. Amps and antenna's might not even work? Love your video's and like and subed....
Now THAT is some cool engineering ;>) Enjoyed watching this video - Subscribed so I see more of the stuff you guys do - Never had seen the inside of a rotor before - laughed like hell at all the ball bearings going out like jumping beans - Look forward to watching more videos - 73 and God Bless - KK6IQK.
Great video! Loved to see your son get his first contact. My son, daughter and I are taking classes to study to get our license with our local club here in Indiana.where in Arkansas are you from? I have family from and some down in Clinton.
Sorry to post a complaint, but it's something the video poster can remedy easily. I click on the video to see a construction project A drag through the video reveal some construction. Please edit the video info to informs viewers the time mark where the construction is being documented. Thanks
+maximum woof some people wear them all the time as normal wear. Its called everyday carry. and its because we can because its our 2nd amendment right and we have a concealed carry permit. Because you never know when you may need it. And its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Some people think there's no need for a fire extinguisher either. In my part of upstate NY, a sidearm is just like a belt or a wrist watch. Much like a tie for some, when I get dressed I consider which holster I will wear for the day.
So while watching this, I went to see how much a 60' crank up tower costs. I quickly determined that, that idea will be a hard pass. A very hard pass. You'd have to remortgage your home and sell a body part to afford such a tower.
noted in the video how there is arm protection from uv radiation and hot sparks, but face in welding hood straight in the plume of welding fumes with no fume redirection...

That is very sad news indeed. My prayers are offered for the family.

Two thumbs up from VE7SCM, you made that kids day. Nice portable rig too!

You guys should make more videos. Your very talented at it. I just love watching them.
Very cool action folks! I love to seeing crazy guys doing crazy stuff! Greetings from Germany
Sweet idea. I might have to build one of these.

Thats really cool
Awesome stuff, loved the shot at 27:30 - music made it!
Nice job! That's a tall one

Awesome 73
Enjoyed every minute of that, Trev, GI4SIZ
Can anyone tell me the manufacturer of this tower? I used to have one similar in design, but not sure of the maker. I'm thinking it was E-Z-Way.
It's a HAM 4 ROTOR not a TAIL TWISTER ( T2X ).
I love watching your videos. You guys come up with some of the best stuff. Hope to make a contact with yas. 73
cool
What are you using as anchors for the guy wires?
Great and ingenious guys.
M6ZLM
you could have left the truck hooked to the trailer and tied off to a tree and pulled it up
Thought I'd throw my call sign in there as well . K4JEE
GOOD JOB,,,!!! GUYS,,,,

also wondering, is a sidearm necessary in the ozarks of arkansas ?
