Gregg Allman had already written the lyrics for the song “Melissa”. He just couldn’t come up with a suitable name, he went to the grocery store and heard the mother calling for her little girl Melissa, he liked the name and used that name for his song. This was stated by Gregg Allman himself.
Great job! Duane and Gregg also recorded Melissa before The Allman Brothers were formed. I understand Gregg wrote it at 17. I read several times that Melissa was Duane's favorite song of Gregg's. Here's the first version: ua-cam.com/video/jZF9cebAcn4/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
Greg would be happy . I always think of Duane in this song that its about his or Greg death one or the other is coming home to be buried next to Melissa .
Thank you for sharing amigo. Same tribe.

Still weepy at 82 years old. What a song. Warren Haynes does a great “Melissa”.
