The Making of a Champion: PT Usha, India's Queen of Track and Field

- From her travel travails in Pakistan as a teenager to why she was terrified of running against the Russians as a 16-year-old at the Moscow Olympics and the heartbreak at the 1984 Games where she missed a medal by 1/100th of a second, PT Usha opens up on the making of a champion.
With no real exposure of the outside world she still managed to make her name. Really a legend
And in 1984 it's really tough😢😢😢😢
The Olympic incident was like sitting in class 9 for the whole year and asked to write the exam of 12th standard... Proud of you mam..u r a legend.
Yes. U got it correctly. One can't win Olympic medal all of sudden or by luck. Proper planning is important. After knowing that Russia and Eastern block countries boycotted LA Olympics, Nambiar sir asked her to concentrate on hurdles just to win a medal 🙄. At least Valsamma was an Asian champion then but Usha never participated in any major competitions in the event 400mH. If she practised it 2 years before LA Olympic, she would have won a gold medal.
Thank you for your service mam. You have inspired a whole generation and a true example of women empowerment. Thanks once again.
Ur right

Real champion
Inspiring a generation. If she had the right support, training, exposure and facilities I am sure she would have won the 1984 Olympic Gold medal. P.T Usha is an inspiration. A gem to the country.
Absolutely!!
her coach was good
She lost the medal 1/100th of a second because of bad starting, even if she had a okay start she could've won a medal in Olympics😢
It’s so sad that she really had no support especially when so young. She has such a great spirit! Glad to see she is training the younger folks now.
Usha's prediction came true in the form of Neeraj Chopra. As she said, it will make a difference in the mind of young Indian athletes. Onwards and upwards. But it started with her. She was the first woman and the second internationally know Indian athlete. Milkha Singh being the first. Her contributions to sports are commendable.
Its so amazing how she describes the obstacles she faced with a smile on her face. I love her down to earth nature. She has paved the way for all the upcoming generations that are interested in sports. Respect ✊
A Kenyan here, a runner too and I can tell this lady has the potential to capitalize on her experience towards shaping athletics in India.
Such humility and sobriety. She did more than what she got in the name of support and infrastructure. Indians came to know about athletics only because of this lady. Hats off chechi
Can watch this with tears only... Not because I am from Kozhikode but that lady is inspiring, the things she had to undergo... She has not said half of the troubles she faced in her career... Inspiring

She is golden girl and iron lady
Why no "Bharat Rathna" for this greatest sports personality India ever produced is a question to be answered.
@@SpinkingKK because she did not achieve big. She only won in asian games, not at world championships, not at olympics etc etc. Maybe
@@inductor43 Winning alone doesn't constitute greatness. Athletics is a true world sport and an Indian woman, known for their saree and conservatism in the hitherto world sports, to come out and become the favourite (Really! Among all the African, American and European women, an Indian woman was favourite?), that too in a "Sprint" event in "Olympics",on her first attempt, with no proper training was beyond incredible on its own. Then she missed out on bronze just because she didn't have the proper training to push her head forward at the finish. Not to mention what it would have been, hadn't she was robbed off her besr start when the Australian woman had a false start. She was not just any Indian woman either. She didn't have the facilities and encouragements a Delhi, Bombay or Madras woman would have got. She came from a village in Kerala, which was, again, one of the states which didn't have much developments an didn't have too many empowered women in those days. It was never easy for a Kerala woman, in those days, to get motivated to do what only men were accustomed to do.The word, Mahila Rathnam should be synonymous with PT.Usha. She went against far too many tides and came victorious. Medal lost was as good as won in this case. Medals are for the athletes to keep. Greatness of the competition is what we remember. There were Shiny Abraham and Valsamma from Kerala in those days too. But, with Usha, we are talking about the Sprint running, which is a power sport. An Indian woman to make the rest of the world athletes scared of in the final is even unthinkable in modern days. She epitomises the incredible power of will, we humans have. Whenever there is a will, there is a way.
“One medal from athletics, and then more will come” really hope that’s true after Neeraj Chopra’s win in Tokyo
She will always be the pride of our nation and inspiration to millions . Look at her contagious smile 😇😎😎 how genuine , honestly and with so much innocence she gave this interview 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 lot of respect ma’am god bless you . ☺️

So sweet of her,So honest. That’s y i love South Indian people, the pure hard working Dravidian 🙏🏾🙏🏾🤗🤗
not all south indian people are good.. not all north indians are bad. She is one in a billion and a hero for whole nation, we have had heroes from all parts of the world. dont generalise places on basis of heroes/
@@BatfreakinMan m not trying to be stereotypical point out North Indian but that’s the truth.
@@ronaldwow that's racism and it's not the truth. Truth is that we are brainwashed from childhood about some races and we keep believing the same thing forever.
@@BatfreakinMan how is it racism when we're all brown? it's just preference. it's not like op was dividing by caste, colour or gender?

Why no "Bharat Rathna" for this greatest sports personality India ever produced is a question to be answered.
On what grounds?
What is " Bharat Ratna " worth now after an AILAA cricketer gets it .
Seeing the state of sporting facilities in India , It's remarkable that she achieved great success. Still, nothing has changed regarding the sports facilities available to athletes.
so inspiring videos.what ever she told infront of us ,the plight of our country athletics didnt changed still in 1980s. a womean like p.t.usha came forward with this intative we all should help her to achive her dream came true.without any EGOS,without any BIAS,REGIONAL OR ANY OTHER FEELINGS.. Fan from Philippines here. She is a legend. She was the archrival of our track queen Lydia De Vega, but they were friends during their times as the queens of track in Asia. Sadly Lydia has died already last year.
A true Legend who has endured all vagaries of time
How many got #goosebumps watching this video.

Wtf 400m hurdles in 55.7 sec thats insane!! We can be damn sure that we neglected a gem of track and field and perhaps lost our first t & f medal
Yes. In finals she clocked 55.42 sec. Still it stands as National record even after 38 years.
