The fashion industry is worth 20+ billion but all the money goes to the top positions, [super]models and celebrities and rarely trickles downs. People who work in fashion are so poorly paid, especially in the big cities where the cost of living is extortionate - London, New York, Paris and Milan. You are not paid proportionally to what you need to survive. Unfortunately, that is what their market rate is worth and what makes fashion such a difficult career path to choose whether it's designing and creative or head office. It's also one of the few career paths where luck and who you know is a more important factor than in other industries, not just hard work.
+Chris L This is the nature of entertainment and luxury industries. There is very little middle ground between the highly successful/established and the startups that look for their one big break.
+Chris L Chill dude, if you are good you get the job, even if you know noone... People who really get the big money are people who don't care about the money, they do their jobs with love of the job, and not because they want the money... What you say is just self-contradiction, and untrue...
i love how this video is talking about people who love fashion but do not need to come from a privileged family. Yet it contradicts when Kane talks about how many internships he's had and how they were unpaid. If you come from a family that is not wealthy how do you afford working for free?? Fashion is about luxury and luxury equals money and that's just the sad truth.
It’s called hard work. Intern and work a second job. I must say, it IS interesting how you assume he’s contradicting himself, just because he interned and didn’t have loads of money .
Hello, my name is Delfina I'm a 15 years old girl from Argentina and I dont really know if someone will take the time to read this but this video made me emotional in so many contexts because for me, fashion is the biggest way to express yourself even when words aren't enough. Just like Alexa said earlier, my parents are not supportive of me following anything related to this beautiful world as a career and it pains me so much because it is everything I really want 100% for sure in life. I would love to put my hands in work and create colored feelings and magical trends but I dont know how to strart to, and I'm also at the age where most of the important people of this industry started *which scares me to death*, + study abroad is my dream and I'd love to know if someone with enough experience could tell me some colleges around the world with a good way of teaching in this matter. Alexa, if you happen to read this *fingers crossed* you are my Jane Birkin and I truly adore you. thank you, Delfina x
Sometimes you just have to live for yourself and do what makes you happy.(except from breaking the law and stuff but I'm sure you know that haha!) Even if it's not what your parents think is best maybe you will gain motivation from trying to prove them wrong! :) I don't know about which collages to look at though, sorry! D: Good luck and all that jazz.
Also things like the art and fashion industry are quite intimidating to me D: I'm 17 and don't know what I'd like to do/if I want to go to university or collage, but definitely something crafty/arty I'm thinking
+delfina kauffmann oyeee pero en Argentina la industria de la moda está en un buen momento, al menos eso se aprecia desde Chile. Si quieres ser diseñadora, tener un título universitario no es un requisito escrito en piedra!

This is so great. I wish this was broadcast on TV somehow so more people will be informed on the fashion industry. I appreciate this content so much!! x
This is so important! Thank you, Alexa. When I tell people that I want to go on to do my Masters in Fashion Psychology I am faced with endless negative responses. I love that you are working to break these views of the fashion industry as being frivolous and rather, showing how important fashion is in shaping and reflecting society.
Alexa I am so inspired by your videos! As a student at Parsons I recognize that fashion is more than just clothes; it is a bunch of words each with a specific role, and its so wonderful. Education. Creativity. Designer. Goal. Aspiration. Vision. Successors. Influence. Magazines. Runway. Models. Gender. Age. Beauty. Attitude. Brands. Audience. Target. Products. Categories. Pen. Paper. Sewing Machine. Scissor. Needle. Thread. Books. History. Time. Opinion. Masters. Beginners. Learners. Eye. Voice. Body. Unique. Touch. Feel. See. Hear. Smell. Colors. Textures. Occasions. Weather. Place. Psychology. Demographics. Culture. Fashion For Fashion. (the list could go on an on)
Talents in fashion can truly mobilize a lot of creative energies that bring the best from among diverse possibilities! Anyone with the passion to express the inner artist can truly make the difference and offer alternative communication from the here and beyond!
This is the first thing that I have seen on the Vogue channel which is actually interesting and informative and well produced. Alexa is great; chatty, down to earth, inquisitive, while looking effortlessly stylish throughout. I am really looking forward to the next part.
the way to break into the fashion industry if you are poor - be young, slim, very beautiful, bold and network your way up to small gigs, then keep going. But make sure you start at like 15 years old.
+Sohail Sabri It's not only about how good you are, I could be amazing enough for the industry but if I'm broke and from a foreign country there's no way I'm getting in a big fashion school. It's naïve to think it's just about hard work.
+Isabel Fernandez lo de que seas de otro país no creo que sea tan decisivo (see russian oligarchs' girlfriends) pero si no tienes $, then yes you are done for.
+Rem Winks That's true and I hate to be that overly-pessimistic person but in order to show that you are talented or passionate about your work you need a platform to showcase it first, and in fashion it's really tough to have that platform if you don't have a lot of contacts or come from a wealthy background. I think we have to thank social media for making it easier to get your name out there but it's still tough if you don't "mess with the right crowd".
I love how in this series you talk about ALL the jobs in the fashion industry nit just designing and modeling. I personally just love the world of fashion but i'm not sure what part I want to play in it. So it's nice to know there are a lot of different options.
You should have someone (Alexa Chung) come and have look at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. We have the best fashion and costume design edjucation in Norway. And the school has the best workshop space in all of Europe. Tremendous students as well!

+lobby boy Exactly, it's damaging to present this idea that you can exist on nothing, the reality is most people would be homeless! Unfortunately once you leave university you still need to intern and the only way to do this is to be supported by your parents. If you don't have this support you have to take any job just to continue living. It's difficult enough for students that live at home let alone those that have moved out.

This is so spectacular! I'm already getting the vibe that these videos will be the ones I'll be showing all those who ask me if I've gone crazy for studying journalism related to the fashion industry. As I've seen, it's crucial that the audience addresses the matters they wish to be responded, so here are my questions: Have you seen "The True Cost"? If so, how were the repercussions in the fashion industry? What plans does the fashion industry (the British, in particular) has when it comes to production, both materials and human resources? I believe the world can keep getting outstanding art through fashion, but we can all contribute to it being a more responsible matter.

And then again, thank you so much for making me understand fashion from the inside and giving me a closer look to what it really is! How’s the fashion going?
This is brilliant, Alexa! Excited for more!
