Saw a teacher crying about her $300,000 student loan. That is like a 3rd grade teacher allowed to buy a Bently and then let her have it for free when she cannot pay for it!
That statement tells me that the teacher was not qualified to teach anyone if they can't even manage their own finances.
That is the choice of that teacher to get that loan. She could have started in a county college before going to a university because the subjects are credited for less money. Help the uneducated because they couldn't get better jobs.

I grew up poor. There were times we were eating at soup kitchens at churches and times we had good Christmases because firefighters donated gifts. My single indigent mother never felt the need to steal anything. Nobody in a first world country is desperate enough to justify stealing. There are just way too many charities. So why do people feel the need to steal? Drugs. These people need to be forced in to drug rehab and not released until they are clean.

I would bring attention to Vivek’s point about “these are the games companies play” regarding allowing theft in exchange for less regulations, which from a balance sheet/P&L perspective he may be correct. What it appears he ignored or didn’t recognize is the fact that it literally signals that the lives of the people who work their and are put in danger everyday, are overlooked in favor of the bottom line. When you get robbed, you don’t know if you’re gonna die, the merchandise doesn’t matter as an employee. Here's my problem with jail sentences. People in this country have been told that incarceration was/is meant to rehabilitate people. WRONG! Incarceration is meant to remove people from society that refuse to live within society’s rules. The Brits had it right with the Botany Bay Penile Colony and the French with the Cayenne Devil’s Island. We need to get back to removing people from society that refuse to live within the rules. PERIOD!!!
That rehabilitate crap started in the 50-60's or so when a lot of prisons where becoming privately owned and they figured out they could use them for essentially free labor. Unless they start forcing them to take classes and run them through courses and not just make them "optional" it's completely moot.

I grew up poor. As a kid I once stole a bazooka gum because the pink color caught my attention. I put the gum in my coat pocket.
When I got home my mother found the gum in my coat.
She confronted me as to where I got the gum. I had no answer and was shaking like a leaf.
She finally asked me if I stole it? (She knew I did but wanted to hear it from me.
I had no choice but to confess. I got the beating of my life.
Growing up I often thought, gee, it was only gum, she didn't have to hit me that hard. But guess what? Now I am so glad she did. I learned my lesson. I have not stolen again. Plus, I learned that stealing is just wrong.
Today, with adult children of my own, I'm still remembering mom and the beating she gave me. Only this time, I'm glad she cared enough to "teach" me a lesson.
I stole a $.39 tube of lipstick. I wasn't caught, but I had so much guilt over it I didn't steal again either. It wasn't worth it.
In this country there is NO good reason to steal. Poor people can get food and clothes from a LOT of places for free, or very little money. Things like televisions, games, cigarettes, etc. they can live without. I work, make a decent living, but I still cannot buy everything I want, but I have everything that I need.

We just had a family owned place broken into at night, cash and grab style. They all look the same: hood, hat, mask, gloves and they look exactly like all the other grab and go guys on TV. The security camera caught them breaking in at night and stealing stuff. The cops can't do anything. What can you do with some surveillance footage of guys in hoods and masks? I live in a supposedly quiet neighborhood. My local Walgreens gets pilfered so much that they stopped stocking many items entirely, and just put out a few of the big movers on shelves here and there. I guess they're trying not to go the route of having everything under locked plastic displays, like other drugstores.
At this point there's basically no reason to go there, because they're always out of everything. I buy all those supplies online now.
