Ahi typically like deep water so 500 fathoms or more most times. It's just depend where the bait is holding. Waianae is a very current driven area and many times the bait come to the surface because of upwelling. Feel free to email me and we can go over your other questions. Thanks

You kno that disclaimer hit pretty hard to home, I lost a dad that loved to fish before he could teach me most of his techniques. Been interesting growing up teaching myself to troll and slide like my dad use too.

Howzit Billy. I got your email btw and will respond soon. Three poles are plenty for any boat and for a 17' it's perfect. If I had to narrow down to three colors it prob would be 1. Blue salmon 2. Milky purple and 3. Ice blue. There will be times when darks are biting or another color but over the years those three seem the most consistent. Good luck bro

Derek. In 9" lures I do. Two is better then one most times. However if you have a crew that is new then one hook is much safer. For mahis I like the Japan double hook but ahi don't flop around on the deck like Mahi so two hooks aren't as dangerous. Overall no fish is worth getting a hook in your leg.

Nice, thanks for the great info. I run a boat here in Costa Rica and we get into all kinds of species. We have a Black Fin Tuna and a Yellow Fin Tuna that we catch. But we have yet to get anything over a 25 pounda. Im gonna try and run bigger lures and maybe these colors and see how we do. But we got the big Mahi-Mahi running right now. Lots of rain for us means lots of debris and color breaks. Maybe you can share some insight on how the Hawaiians get those nice Mahi-Mahi. Big up!

      castawayconcepts thank you!
Best of luck going after the big tuna. Remember that the waters we fish are really deep blue and the colors are prob different for your waters. Concept is the same some dark lures some light and see what they biting that day. Also mainly bullet lures. Bait is always a good thing for mahi but the prob bigger lures will help you. 🤙🏽

If they're around, they'll bite anything but 7" especially. Blue/pink good color for Mahi

I usually run 2 but i usually have a experienced crew. If you're starting out then go with one hook or the japan double hook. thanks
