    Oh man. Great series of games but always such a HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS to run properly on PCs of that era.
    One of the main reasons I joined the navy later in the 90's.

      I used to play the heavy scenarios, with multiple carrier groups, regimental numbers of Soviet Naval Aviation, etc., knowing they would probably lock up, just on the 1 in 10 chance of playing the scenario through. It made you play aggressively, because the more enemy units you destroyed in the big simulations, the less processing power the game needed.

    I spent many enjoyable hours with this game Many years ago. I wish they would make a new version.

      You're welcome, James. Game is expensive, but right up your alley; Command: Modern Air / Naval Operations WOTY

    I didn't know English very well back when I first played this game. But somehow, when I was five years old, I managed to sink my first NATO ship. When this music started playing I was like: "Oh God, it's so awesome and inspirational!" I didn't even know it was the Soviet Anthem, figured it out after hearing it on the news a couple of years later. Hearing it again just gave me an eargasm.

    This video flashes me back.
    I kept a 2002 PC just so I could play classic Harpoon. Three years ago it finally had a hard drive failure and that was the end of my Harpoon gaming.

    Oh my god, I tried playing this game as a young child of 7 or 8 in the 90s on the Macintosh SE and I was so confused.

    Interestingly missile launch effect is better in old version, a proper sound and relatively observable launch animation. In version 97 and HCE, just quick "phew" sound and you see a very quick animation. Do not fix, if it is not broken...

    It was fun blanketing the Atlantic Ocean with sonobuoys with the P-3C Orions (not sure of the name) in search of Soviet subs.

    This is the game that Tom Clancy used as his information source for the Hunt for Red October?

    • @bb2222bb
      @bb2222bb 4 місяці тому

      Harpoon was a war game created by Larry Bond, and used as a non-classified alternative for NAVTAG, the war game used to train officers at that time. He released it to the general public successfully, where Tom Clancy was able to use it for research on the Hunt for the Red October (which is why larry bond is credited in the version of the book i have, atleast), and also what he used to play out scenarios in Clancy's later book, Red Storm Rising, which Bonds co-wrote. After the success Clancy and the board game had, Sid Meiers (yes, the one from civ) wrote a game based on the war game that was later refined into what you are watching. So yes, it was used to help research the Hunt for Red October, but was featured more prominently in Red Storm Rising.
