  • Why spend hundreds at a shop to get your spark plugs changed?!? Here I have a video guide for replacing spark plugs on a Subaru EJ motor. I tried to be detailed so anybody watching this should be able to tackle this job. Its really not that hard at all, just get the right tools and take your time and you should be able to get it done in just a couple hours time.

I didn't understand why you said to tape it. Then when it happened I understood. I used needle nose pliers to remove the sparkplug socket lol

People just think changing Spark plugs on subarus are intimidating because it's a boxer engine. It's not hard. Like, at all. It takes less work to change the plugs than most modern cars.

Life saver. My 2012 WRX was dying in idle because of bad coil packs on a road trip. Got quoted $1800 from a Midas in Philly to replace them; but replaced them with this video for around $500 total for new coils and put in new plugs too. Epic.

He did appear to cut the fiddling he had to do on cyl #1's coil pack.
He also failed to mention how hard it is to get the coil pack's boot for cyl 4 onto the plug. It's hard to come at it square on, and it's entirely by feel. Getting your hands down in there enough to manipulate it is not easy, and I'm a skinny fuck.

Is this considered easy? It is easier than jacking up an engine. In the other cars I have, the plugs are directly accessible. I have changed cam timing belts that were easier than this. My 2013 WRX STI has been nothing but problems almost as bad as my old Fiat 128. But well done, video. I'm glad I don't have to jack up the engine to remove the plugs.

  • @Pje3ski

Milwaukee makes a battery operated ratchet that sounds like it makes as much noise as an air ratchet? Good video. I just did my timing belt, everyone wanted 1500for the belt, water pump, thermostat etc. parts were right at 500. I will get quotes on the plugs, if I can get them for $400 or less I’ll pay, the right side doesn’t look fun.

They should seat pretty snug onto the spark plug, just keep trying to get it on there all the way, sometimes they are finicky and seem to not want to sit on the spark plug easily but it’s just that rubber that’s getting in the way or getting folded. It happens to me sometimes too but after some effort I’m able to get it on there all the way. I wouldn’t recommend just leaving it as is till you get it fully seated on the plug. Once everything lines up perfectly it will slide right on with no issue
