What’s up guys we’re back with yet another MTV contest video, but this one of the newer contests I’ve covered. This one dates back to 1999 when Korn was about to drop their fourth album Issues in November. Two months before it’s release the band teamed up with MTV to run a contest that would allow one lucky fan the chance to design the album artwork, oh and the band judged a collection of Korn cover bands. That’s what we’re going to discuss in today’s video.
Korn would appear on the music scene in 1994 with their self titled debut album and over the years follow it up with 1996’s Life is Peachy and 1998’s Follow the Leader. The band enjoyed a tremendous amount of success selling million of records, but the success also came with a lot of extracurricular activities. Davis would tell an interviewer “Follow The Leader is my album of self-destruction. There’s none of my childhood stuff going on any more. This is more about me dealing with pressures I put on myself. The pressure of what it’s like to be in this band, of being a father, all kinds of shit.” But ahead of the band’s fourth record, 1999’s Issues Frontman Jonathan Davis would end up getting sober and the band would end up enlisting Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam producer Brendan O’ Brien who was no-nonsense in the studio. Davis talked about his change to his lifestyle
Ahead of the album’s release, drummer David Silveria would speak to MTV and gave fans a heads up in terms of what they could expect on Korn’s forthcoming album revealing it was “a little more simplified” “kind of heavier grooves” and was “kind of similar to the beginning. Long and short, fans weren’t going to expect a drastic departure from the band’s previous works.

MTV News would write announcing the contest Korn is looking for square works of art that feature an abstract design or an image of the entire group. All entries must be mailed to Korn via its label, Epic Records, and be in their hands no later than Monday, October 4. WHen the contest ran the band hadn’t yet announced the name of their forthcoming album. Korn would appear on MTV to reveal the winning entry and they would even judge korn cover bands. Silveria would claim to mtv it was his idea to release the album with four different covers and itw as the band’s manager who suggested that they should let their fans design teh cover and they choose the best one. The band claimed they got flooded with over 25,000 entries but mtv would report they got 6,000 entries. . and hear’s a montage of the revealing the album cover and introducing the winner Alfredo Carlos.
Alfredo Carlos who was 23 at the time submitted his design in a pizza box, won $10,000 and played host to the band at a signing session they did in the san fernando valley shortly after the album’s release. d Carlos, who submitted his design in a pizza box, received $10,000 and was host to the signing session in this San Fernando Valley town about 20 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
There were four finalists chosen for the album cover with some of the other entrants having their artwork used for special editions of the album However I saw someone on reddit posted a picture of six different covers.
Looking at some of the posts on the nu-metal reddit thread one poster claimed around the time of the contest there were some people claiming the winner stole the artwork and supposedly found where it was copied from, but I couldn’t find any follow up on that. I was there for the album signing in 1999 at Tower Records, Northridge CA! I remember I went with my brother to get a glimpse of the madness and then we ended up staying. We waited 8 hours to see the band. We got to the front of the line and the security guard asked if we had wristbands. We didn't know you needed wristbands. They told us to stand to the side and let the people with wristbands in first and then once everyone with wristbands get in, then we would get in. Jonathan's ex bodyguard Loc came over to ask the security guard why we were standing on the side and the security guard told him. Loc then said "nah man let them in" and we followed him in. Got the album cover signed by everyone including Alfredo Carlos. It was awesome and surreal!
Issues was the album that got me into Korn. Falling Away From Me and Make Me Bad are still favorites of mine.
Most people stopped listening around then.

I remember this very well. Korn and limp bizkit were my favorite bands at that time and I loved that they had fans submit their art for the cover. It was a really cool idea. I remember being bummed watching the korn cover bands while korn was right there. I wanted to see korn lol but they did well
yeah it's honestly one of the coolest contests MTV has done.
I was on one of their first festival shows in my country, sadly Johnny boy was passed out in his hotel room 🤣
Issues was the first album I bought with my own money and it was my introduction to Korn. I got the one with the stick figures drawn with chalk. I think that one came in 4th place and the cashier told me that it was the rarest cover.
That was the cover I wanted, but was sold out by the time I got to the record store. I did find a copy at Hot Topic, but they wanted twice the price. I ended up getting the one with the shadow looming over the scared child. While I thought Issues was better than Follow the Leader, it was the last Korn album I ever listened to. They just got really stale and repetitive. Got way more into the obscure bands of the early 90’s and heavy “shoe gaze” style music from there on
I wasn't aware of the contest when I got the album, but was a little surprised to learn that the cover art I got (chalk drawings on a playground) wasn't actually the "official" art, haha.
yeah, it's a pretty clever contest. Definitely one of the cooler one's I've covered.

Yep, first 3...Issues was decent...
Rest faded away ...never connected with those.
Definitely the first album, a friend of mine received a copy from his uncle back in 1994, been listening ever since.
God I remember this being all over MTV and TRL. Was a good time to be a kid
was pretty much the end of an era with MTV slowly transitioning into what we know it for today.
I used to run home from school to be able to watch TRL at 3:30 EST when it came on.
This makes me miss 80s and 90s MTV.

They always seemed really appreciative of their fans. It was easy to like them back then haha. I had the one album cover that looked they were in a prison. That was my favorite of the four

I actually remember this contest and planned on entering it. Problem was that I was only 12 years old and I think it was an 18 years or older contest. Needless to say I was disappointed, because I had already drawn my entry and everything. Don't know whatever ended up happening to the drawing I made all those years ago, probably ended up getting thrown away. I remember being initially disappointed with the winning art, but over time, I realized just how iconic it would become for Korn. The album is still one of their best imho.
I remember the Metallica load contest the 12 year old kid had his step dad enter and won.

This was during Korn's zenith! Such a great year for Nu-Metal as a genre!
Do I remember this contest? A couple of friends of mine tried very hard to get me to enter. I ended up doing a couple of drawings, but ultimately didn't submit either because I didn't think my art and Korn's music meshed very well. One of the two friends that pestered me to enter ended up submitting a piece that was quite good though. Never liked the winning piece, I was a fan of the more comic bookish looking one with the band as stuffed dolls in straight jackets.

At around the 3:34, that looks like the cover that was eventually used for the album “See You on the Other Side”.
I remember my friends entering this contest, and how cool we thought they were for doing it. We all gathered around excitedly when they revealed it before sending it off. We honestly thought that they had a chance of winning.

Just one of the reasons Korn is awesome. You left out that they also had a contest for a fan to direct one of their videos. Fans submitted a script and the winner was brought in and given a producer, stylist, etc to help direct the music vid.

Korn were my intro to heavier music, and the Issues album was definitely a part of that experience. Even though I was too young to remember this contest (8 at the time), it's still interesting to look back on.
Issues was my first KoRn album and will always hold a special place in my heart. It was also like my second CD ever, the first being the MI2 soundtrack for whatever reason haha

The video was entertaining. I don't recall the contest, but I do remember hearing about the covers being fan-made. Also, it's always nice to hear about an Mtv contest that didn't end tragically. LOL
I remember it. Was a huge fan back in the day and actually did alot of artwork. I thought about entering but couldnt dedicate my life to it at the time and honestly,I think thats what it wouldve taken to win. Good memories
I remember that. I think they had a few different versions of the cover art. That was a really awesome contest.
I definitely remmeber watching that cover reveal show. They showed clips of the band going through a lot of the entries. I remember the band get peeved that there were a lot of submissions of drawing of cobs of corn.
Man, I remember this contest when I was a kid & seeing them in the store afterwards. I think the best cover won.
I also remember around that same time Deftones did the same thing with their White Pony cover. They didn’t have fans make it, but they had 4 color variations for them. I still regret not buying the other variations for Issues or White Pony.
Me too I have the zipper mouths version of Issues because that was my favorite as a child, I played that one till it wore out and have one or two copies of the standard ragdoll, it would be so cool to have all four
I think my white pony CD was the grey one, the one without Back To School as an intro (the normal one?) I didn't know there was more than the silver cover and the white cover

I remember watching that live it was really cool! They also reused the ripped up doll on the serenity of suffering album cover but it was all rotted and messed up looking now.

this album artwork was what introduced me to being a "fan" of music/band. i had it on giant poster in my room, which was my first band poster ever.
I do remember this contest. I started a drawing for it but didn't finish it. I was a young teenager at the time and needed my mother to buy the cd for me. My brother and I got into a big fight because I didn't pick the album cover he wanted.

Korn's album The Path of Totality is one of my favourite albums. I think it sounds so fresh and uplifting.
Follow the Leader and Life is the album that got me into Korn. I remember when the art contest was going on for the cover of Issues.
This explains why I saw different cover art for the same album when Issues was a new release. I liked some of their songs that played on the radio, but other than that, I wasn't a big fan of Korn. However, I did sort of follow them in music publications at the time just to see what was happening with them.

The patchwork band in a prison cell cover art was really cool and tends to be how I visualise the album a fair bit as I listen to it.

Nah. Real artists making their own art is profoundly more interesting than a group of wannabes, copying other people's music. Un-original people are everywhere.

Yup, I did enter. Of course I didn't win, but I liked what I did. It was made to resemble a kid's drawing using colored pencils and depicted a burning American flag with words like "Depression" and "Anxiety" surrounding it.

I was aware of the contest back in the day but I'm surprised to see there is still no real information of the Issues album edition I own. It's the Europe edition (that one with the two kids and the red faces).

I was a freshman in high school, my buddy Rene entered and didn't win. Once the album dropped in the booklet were almost all of the drawings submitted and we went crazy when we spotted his submission.

This artwork is a textbook example of how one simple, extremely astute choice can cut through the noise of an immense amount of competent competition. The doll looks like it's about to be put on trial Kurt Weil-style by it's mother, former teacher and ex-wife. You can almost hear the worms turning and the wall crumbling, and there's absolutely no way Alfredo didn't realize that. KoRn choosing his work is like the ultimate "I See What You Did There". I hope he got an especially good cut of the royalties in addition to that cheque, he's probably very wealthy now!

I've never heard the story that the cover was copied, and I was around when this contest happened (I remember watching it on TRL). I found the reddit thread where that guy said that, but I can't find any other info. I think they may be misremembering, or remembering something that wasn't a big deal, as their description of the other artwork doesn't seem that compelling.

Im pretty sure it was Ozzy which Korn opened up for like in 92or93 and i was like WTF do we have here!!! I was a fan from that night on! It took a few songs in but I definitely knew that this is something new coming up right here!

Saw Korn and Rob Zombie in 1999 in Wichita Kansas.
