  • Taiwan is grappling with a new COVID wave that’s set to peak in July. On Thursday, health minister Chiu Tai-yuan hosted his first COVID press conference, where he stressed that there’s an ample supply of antivirals. As of June 22, Taiwan has enough Remdesivir for about 100,000 people and enough Paxlovid for 237,000.

With COVID resurging, we have been taking precautions. We’re actively stocking up on COVID antiviral drugs.

We ordered enough Molnupiravir for 40,000 people. Doses for 20,000 people will soon arrive. However, Molnupiravir offers only about 30% protection, so its protective effect is relatively poor. There are also some safety concerns.

We will use Molnupiravir on patients with severe renal or hepatic insufficiency, and patients who must take medications that would interact badly with the other antivirals.
Twenty thousand doses of Molnupiravir are set to arrive July 4, officials say. But the drug will only be used on select patients due to safety concerns. Doctors advise the public to receive at least one or two COVID boosters this year, to reduce the risk of severe illness.
