    Very good helpful informative video. Didn't realise it contains so much salt, but like you said: coastal aereas. Thanks a lot!

    This is an excellent video. You just answered every question I had about the why and how of cocopeat washing.
    I was using cocopeat after only hydrating it, and whatever plant/seed I planted just didn't do well. It was then that I read somewhere that it should be washed first 🤦🏼‍♂️. I felt like an idiot.
    Anyway, thanks a lot for this video!

      Same with me. I used cocopeat so many times without washing. Only after paying for some hydroponic training course, I came to know it needs to be washed. Then it also needs buffering and fungicide treatment. Cocopeat has a nature of absorbing Calcium. So you have to first saturate it with calcium so that it doesn't take any calcium away from nutrition water and leaves nothing for plants. This is done by soaking cocopeat in calcium nitrate solution for 48 hours.

    And thats why nowadays most people use hydroponic no matter in apartments or single land house, use no soil. Because hydroponic is much easier to maintain compared to soil. Ph and ec easy to take care in water than soil

    • @smgardener

      Not entirely true. I do both hydroponics and organic gardening and my aim is to use as less of materials I can to make gardening too complicated. I use cocopeat and vermicompost and results are great. Managing the garden is also easy, you just need to water the plants with plain old water. The thing is that I use organic methods for crops that are harvested in a staggered fashion because If i am preparing 10 buckets every week or 10 days for growing a certain crop then I will have to make different nutrient solutions for every 10 buckets in 10 days and 4 nutrient solution reservoirs for 40 buckets in a month which gets tedious to mantain and prepare so organic for such crops And hydroponics for others

    Best video on this topic!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏thanks 👍👍 *QUESTIONS 1)* What should be the final ppm of water from washed cocopeat if planing to use it with soil? *2)* why do you use RO water or rainwater for washing cocopeat if planning for use in aquaponics BUT only tap water if cocopeat is to used with soil?

    • @smgardener
      @smgardener  4 роки тому +4

      (1) Even If using in soil it's best if you can keep ppm as low as you can but try not to go over 1000 ppm
      (2) Because when using in Hydroponics we want TDS of coco peat as low as we can because we need a particular range of TDS to work with and if we don't wash it with RO water then salts would be too high to cause plant stress and nutrient imbalances as any changes in hydroponic systems have quick effect on plants. For different reasons, plants can die overnight in hydroponics WHEREAS
      In soil, plants can work with higher TDS, although not too high. TDS of water from soil is pretty high if you can measure it you will know. And any change doesn't affect plants quickly in soil. Plants don't die overnight in soil.

    Why did you use a nipple in the bucket. The hole could have done the job.

    • @nalin31081
      @nalin31081 Місяць тому

      Yes a hole will do the job. Nipple helps to collect cocopeat water for TDS testing cleanly. You can just pick some washed cocopeat, squeeze out the water and collect in beaker. Then test TDS.

      Agar koi easy tareeka hota toh zaroor batata sir. Par Cocopeat ko properly wash karne k liye uska TDS neeche laana hi padhega aur uske liye RO ka paani chahiye Ya aisa tap water jiska TDS 250 ppm tak ho

    Brother, my tap water tds is below 160ppm, can i use it to wash cocopeat and bring down tds for hydroponics In cocopeat medium ?
    And aap buffer karte hai calnit and mag sulph. Se ? Kya really jaruri hai buffer karna ya sidhe dhone ke baad direct use kar sakte hai ?
    And can i contact you on telegram if you could help clearing some doubts regarding same ?

    • @smgardener
      @smgardener  3 роки тому +1

      Yes. You can use your tap water that is below 160 ppm to wash cocopeat. Sometimes, i buffer my cocopeat and sometimes i don't. If you don't buffer then there is a slight possibility that your crop may show calcium deficiency but it's not always the case. Many times there is no problem in using non buffered cocopeat
      Here is a video 👇 where I have used both buffered and non buffered cocopeat :-
      ua-cam.com/video/4Yic-vu5X5w/v-deo.html

    • @mrdotak6
      @mrdotak6 3 роки тому

      @@smgardener already watched that 2 times. And i think you just made a comparison between low and high tds water and i don't think you've buffered it using calcium nitrate and magnesium sulphate.
      Also I've bought this generic atc ph and tds3 tds meter from amazon and being a new bie and having only these 2 meters with me. I'm doubtful of results this gave me.
      Tds neter shows my ro water tds just 6-8PPM which is too low while of tap(municipal one) below 160ppm like ,between 130 and 160.
      And got really tired of trying to calibrate this ph meter using screw.
      I actually bught this distilled water 5l can from local battery shop and checked it's ph and tds which are about 7.5-7.8 and 20-30ppm respectively.
      Now i have heard distilled water should hsve very low TDS below 10ppm so i am not sure what's wrong.
      This ph meter shows my ph of RO water acidic between 5.8-6.5 and i got shocked if it's really true ?
      I mean i tried calibration with both buffer powder and tried testing one by one adjusting it with screw to make it 4.01 and 6.86 but everytime i switch to 6.86 to 4.01 and vice vers there's always a 0.1-0.2 fluctuation.
      So i am really not sure if these cheap ph meters are meant to be like this or it should be accurate every time i test same liquid.
      I think i should just use it as a sort of idea giving pH machine and make my solution ph between 5.8 to 6.3 to be on safer side since I'm going to use only cocopeat method only and there won't be need tk regulate fluctuations in case of dwc or pvc pipe method.
      Plz share your experience or user inputs as to try on vegetables it would take at least 5-7, days for new seed germination and in that mean time of 7 days the return window of amazon will close.
      So sorry I've to write such long post and burden you, but i trust your instincts and experience too much.
