the cool thing about alien isolation is that creepy git learns how you like to hide from it, and how you fight it, as you progress. Love lockers? itll check them more often. use the flammenwerfer too much? it'll learn the safe range to stay at so you need to use more fuel to make it run away. genius
I read a game informer article and it apparently uses two AI with one being the titular Alien and the other being a game master of sort that slowly drops the aliens hints to where you are, making sure you were constantly being stalked while still making it to where you can survive
This is actually a common misconception about the director AI used in Alien Isolation. It doesn't actually learn how you play, but the longer you play the game more AI functions get activated and it begins to perform different actions, such as checking lockers more often, and keeping distance when you use the flamethrower. By doing this it creates the effect of acting as though it has in fact learned how you play. Nevertheless, a terrifying game that took me a bit longer to finish than it might have otherwise.
I know Bioshock isn't a horror game per se, but it honestly manages to terrify you through its ambience and the overall feel. As a kid I could barely finish the demo without my heartbeat going up.
I was looking for someone to call Bioshock out. Underwater too, even if you don't always see it, you know it so that feeling of being trapped is amplified to 11. Man it was so tense.

fatal frame hands down. imagine you're about to sleep, flick off the lights, then notice something standing beside your bed. no screaming or anything. just the realization that there's something which is not supposed to be there, and you're staring at something you're not supposed to see. as you're about to piss your pants, it starts moving towards you. the only way to beat it is to bust out your camera, and shoot only when it's 2 inches away from you. thanks japan.
D K and then that something that's not supposed to be by your bed, starts repeating the words "I'm gonna eat your soul" in a voice that sounds like something straight out of hell.
I started playing FF3 on PS2 when I was 14. I remember that for 6 months I would boot the game, reach the title screen or start on the safe house, only to turn the console off, because I was too scared to play further. I did manage to complete it, but there is nothing comparable to Fatal Frame. I'm an avid Horror games/movies fan.

Yes, yes she is. She doesn't do anything, she has one very little part where you see her a couple times in her room and then pretty much never again until the end.
Laccifer I remember playing FEAR when I was like 7 or 8. After playing that game I got a real bad sleeping disorder. That game still scares the livens shit out of me. Looking at that little girl is creepy enough but If you look directly into her eyes then just forget about it
Guys he’s been sarcastic I think. I heard ppl say the AI had big flaws that could be exploited. I say I heard bc when I played I felt it was rather intelligent so idk
“Darkwood” is probably the most intense, terrifying game I’ve ever played. It’s got a different, top-down type of format, but nothing beats the survival horror aspect of sitting in a corner, your board with nails cocked back, waiting for the things walking around outside and knocking on the doors to come in. Oh, and they will come in. The whole game-the mystery, it’s unforgiving nature of not knowing anything, the ever-evolving world and mobs-is intense and never loses its ability to make your heart race. Another scary one is “Hunt: Showdown.” Honestly, that game has the most terrifying tutorial in all of gaming history. The relatively high stakes for dying adds to the horror, along with the aspect of not only having to deal with terrifying monsters but other players, as well.
I swear half of the reason why "Darkwood" is so tense is that bloody soundtrack. It has very John Carpenter-ish vibe to it, where it's spooky sounding but it's always in background and it never gets too distracting.
Ya they said they put it at one because some people couldn't finish it implying one means scarier... I think amnesia shoulda been on the list instead of a bonus.
"Layers of fear" deserves a mention. Its too damn creepy. It did a unique thing in its gameplay by shifting surroundings around the player. So you are never really sure what will hit you next. Like when you are passing a hallway and you see a painting of a normal face but when you are coming back you notice that the face on the painting is smiling!! Stuff of nightmares 💀💀👹
I liked the idea of it but I never got scared, at times I was annoying with the attempt to spook me like yeah rattle the door melt the walls, now let me find the next collectible
I also liked their technique of subverting your expectations- you would often be walking down a hallway and hear a rattle behind you. You tense up, turn around slowly, only to find there's nothing behind you. Sigh of relief. You turn around to continue exploring and then something pops out in *front* of you where you weren't expecting it.
i remember playing outlast (the first one) with a bunch of friends all of us got so scared that we watch a guide for some jumpscares and we kept on switching who would play the game
I played outlast with a friend through Skype, we were talking to each other, screaming at stuff that was happening, panicking and asking every 5 second where the fuck are you, where are you going etc etc. It was a lot of scary and fun stuff
i played Outlast by my self at night believe it or not i said i should go to bed then it finished installing and i played for hours i was scared but i still played it by myself

Even my friends refuse to play it coz its too scary. Im happy you guys put fatal frame in the video. I hope in the future there's more video about this series. Fatal frame series need more recognition
Would have liked to see some older classics on here like Parasite Eve, Rule of Rose, Silent Hill 2, Kuon, Clocktower 3, Manhunt, The Suffering. Silent Hill: Origins really messed with me though. And Fantasmagoría was another that slightly traumatized me back in the day.
I just made it to the prison (I think that's what it was) after the elevator collapse. Sorry for any spoilers to anyone. But I've found the game intense and and suspenseful so far but not really scary..
Same here. I always turned down the volume, that was the only way I ever reached the end. Lol Don't know if it will still be that scary though, maybe I'll play it again to find out.
If they made a remake of the Fatal Frame games in FPS version with the amazing graphics + animations with today's technology, for sure it would be a new mark as a scary game.
I think Silent Hill 4 (the room) was the scariest game I've played, more so than fatal frame. It makes you constantly paranoid when your safe house is no longer safe x.x
Soma definitely needs some recognition, as someone who absolutely loved Outlast and played it all on my own, this is the first game where I've actually screamed and stopped playing, Soma is genuinely one of the most scariest intense games I've ever played because of how it plays with its claustrophobic level design and twisted creatures and lighting. It's kind of incredible... But I will probably never finish it😂
Condemned takes the cake for me. The sound design is so realistic. That was the first game I had to take a break from because it gave me so much anxiety.
Can't wait for Amnesia 2 this year.. The way that series tells it's stories and the atmosphere it sets up is some of the most authentic chills I've ever got from a video game. You really feel terrible for the person you're playing as.
I love horror. Paranormal horror mostly. I remember back in the day playing through Silent Hill 3 and having to take breaks because it was scary playing by myself. 😂 I never got that with the first 3 Resident Evil games for some reason. Now I mostly watch play throughs of scary games. Saves me money.
SarahJane Playing Silent Hill is honestly emotionally draining. But I bet that s how the game developers want us to to feel. I remember the train section in SH3 frustrate the crap outta me.
Growing up when the first Xbox was still getting it’s bearings. I remember every other weekend night, both of my parents and their friends were trying to beat Fatal Frame but got too scared that they couldn’t finish. To this day when I see either one of my parents and they see me watch videos on horror games or people playing PT they still agree that Fatal Frame is the scariest but did say that from what they saw of me playing PT, that they probably couldn’t play it because of how creepy it is.
@Keith Bacoccini hell yeah! That would be badass. I think there’s a game in development that looks like fear, idk much about it, I just remember seeing a trailer awhile back.
I remember playing Hello Neighbour with my daughter and being a total fiend and scaring the living shit out of her and doing mad bird screeching noises too. For once tho, this list is pretty good and I always remember when FEAR was released and thought nothing of it until the mild jump scares happened and then suddenly the level changed to something completely different and then you thought 'Ahhh Ffff what am I gonna do? Where do I go? Look the ffff around' and you still had to fight and shoot things that were appearing!
When I tried Unreal P.T on PC, it was so scary and creepy I couldn't finish it. I tried a second time with a friend and we still couldn't finish it due to how scary it is. I'm glad it got a mention on here.
Alien Isolation was surprisingly easy for me. It's the only one I have completed. It's weird. Everything in this video was scary but Alien Isolation was not bad imo at least.
Doom 3 was definitely the scariest of the entire series. It was a much more slower-paced, horror-themed than the rest of the series. I loved it, and have played through the original, resurrection of evil, and the BFG edition. It's great, but I can see some Doom fans not liking it because it kind of broke the formula of the other Doom games.. literally all the rest are non-stop, fast-paced, run n gun, rip n tear.
I used to explore abandoned buildings with friends back in high school. Running into squatters was scary as fuck and the Condemned game emulates that kind of horror perfectly.
I've played the evil within. I didn't get scared, but couldn't figure out how to get past the 3rd level. I got so frustrated I rage quit and never picked it up again.
Ah...ever tried going in Caves in The Forest...pretty damn spooky...especially if the lovely mutants are around...or the moment when they decide to ditch the caves and come out in the actual forest😂
Fatal Frame (to be exact, the second game) is one of the best horror games I've played and was my first horror game. I bought it after a shopkeeper recommended the game for me. I was around 12 at the time. I also happened to finish the third game and it was also amazing. I'm still thankful for that shopkeeper for recommending such a masterpiece
Seeing someone talk about F.E.A.R. made me genuinely happy. It was one of my first single player shooters and it seems to be completely forgotten. Great game.
1:58 Sorry, "the original game that helped start the Slenderman fascination"? The game was just following on to that fascination. Not that there's anything necessarily wrong with that, but Marble Hornets, Everyman Hybrid, et. al, would like a word.
P.T. scared the ever-loving shit out of me, man. I wish I'd never uninstalled it from my PS4. Alien Isolation remains the only horror game I've ever been able to finish. The loop is just too good, and the ambient sounds so thrilling, that I just had to get through it.
Alien Isolation is my #1 favorite survival horror game. I loved how this game stayed true to the original right down to the retro technology. It's a classic and I would absolutely love another Alien game just like this one.
Condemned has amazing sound design. It really makes you feel like you're in an abandoned building with homeless crackheads lurking around. I think Alien is the only other game that comes close and it's not as scary because the setting and alien aren't realistic.
Gameranx in previous videos: Resident evil 7 is diffrent form other resident evil games Also gameranx: resident evil 7 brought back the scaryness of the series
I remember watching my friend play PT during a Halloween party in 2014. I truly hope someone taps Hideo Kojima and gives him the resources to create something like Silent Hills, but with a different title. Show Konami what they missed out on.
I saw some other comments where people mentioned "The Suffering" and that's a game they have to remake with updated graphics. A lot of people missed out on it and it was one of my favorite PS2 Games. Stuck in a prison fighting all sorts of twisted monsters, tons of cussing, choices you make in game that alter the ending, such a classic.
YES! like i’ve played outlast and all that shit and it didn’t effect me the way SOMA does. i think the lack of intense boss fights and running builds suspense, along with being in a dark and enclosed area with minimal light. rather than having constant music too, the game utilizes the nasty sounds of the creatures and what not.....SOMA definitely makes me more uncomfortable than a lot of the other horror games i’ve played thus far. the creatures too, like the fact that you can’t always get a look of what they appear to be, makes me use my imagination as to what they would look like instead; something a lot of horror games don’t do

DUDE WHAT ABOUT *AMNESIA??*
P.T. ruined my life for over a month. I couldn't sleep right, I was nervous every time i was alone in my apartment, it was intense.
Thank you so much for mentioning condemned that game was so good but absolutely terrifying especially at night when you're alone.
"By low key I mean high key"
Idk makes sense to me.
Mr. Exist I only say low key when I mean highkey
No mention of "The Forest?" Those creepy canabul things, coupled with super smart AI. I always dreaded going down into those caves.
I think it didnt make the list because it's not a linear story.
Canabul
@@XxBlackCellxX yes it is, have you ever played through the entire game. That game has a concrete campaign
The last bossfight got me screaming
@@lolsup9817 yeah... I can't spell. Cannibal
Can't wait for Amnesia 2 this year.. The way that series tells it's stories and the atmosphere it sets up is some of the most authentic chills I've ever got from a video game. You really feel terrible for the person you're playing as.
But I do everything alone.....

When I was a kid, manhunt was terrifying.
Totally agree it was a great game and scary😱 as fuck man 💯
Definitely deserved a spot on this list
Facts my dad played it when i was young
I've never played Manhunt but i don't think i ever will because that Pigsy section is just to scary for me
Martín Vargas haha yeah, thats the wnd tho so you could play the rest 😂 but its still creepy af
yeah when you're in a game without weapons I always feel like that's the key to making me scared lol
I played Silent Hill during hurricane Sandy...and then the power went out...for a week. Those were some interesting and sleepless nights.
Sounds like you got a really decent pick in the family Department
I love. Condemned and Fear. Would love the first ones remastered etc.
Haha you sound like a fun father!
reggiep75 I actually made a video playing a horror game with my little niece lmaoo she shit her pants
Visage. Man this game is giving me the spooks and its clearly under rated, you guys should check it out
When I tried Unreal P.T on PC, it was so scary and creepy I couldn't finish it. I tried a second time with a friend and we still couldn't finish it due to how scary it is. I'm glad it got a mention on here.
10 seconds after this was uploaded god help me.
Alien: Isolation is the only scary game I couldn't finish, it was literally freaking me out.
Bro same lol
I never finish a horror game, lol
Alien Isolation was surprisingly easy for me. It's the only one I have completed. It's weird. Everything in this video was scary but Alien Isolation was not bad imo at least.
Doki doki literature club is a good one play it.
@@_junko_5701 Nah, that game is exclusively for hardcore Weebos.
I couldn't finish Alien: Isolation. I uninstalled it. Another one I couldn't finish was Blair Witch. I love horror video games bit those two got me.
Damn, I've replayed Alien Isolation like 10 times because I really liked the game. Maybe I should try the Blair Witch game
are you 4?
Special Honorable Mentions:
- The Evil Within Series
- DOOM 3
- Dreadout (PC gamers' need for a Fatal Frame-like game on PC)
indonesian? lmao
Doom 3 used to scare the shit out of me on the OG Xbox
Dreadout! That game has a special place in my heart.
2POWERFUL subnautica isn’t horror it’s terror. It should be on this list
I'd totally add Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl's underground abandoned labs to this list. Every time they manage to creep me out
Agreed!
I used to explore abandoned buildings with friends back in high school. Running into squatters was scary as fuck and the Condemned game emulates that kind of horror perfectly.
You're tearing me apart, LISA!
Oh hi Mark....
Got it! Ten games to trick your young siblings into playing
That's devilish
The most scariest game I ever played was Luigi Mansion on the Game Cube😭
Omg how did you get through that game 😭
It's not scary, but I managed to finish the game(on a wii) 19 years after I first started playing it on the gamecube.. that's scary🙈🤣
I've played the evil within. I didn't get scared, but couldn't figure out how to get past the 3rd level. I got so frustrated I rage quit and never picked it up again.
@@beanface7408 Was that the chainsaw guy or something else?
Subnautica. The dread of going into the dark unknown was so unsettling.
Stinkyplatypus Stinkyplatypus Ya they didn’t want it to be a horror game but that shit gets me every time.
Eric Skalicky for sure. Basic human fear of the unseen imo.
Such a great game. I wish I could replay it again for the first time.
Ah...ever tried going in Caves in The Forest...pretty damn spooky...especially if the lovely mutants are around...or the moment when they decide to ditch the caves and come out in the actual forest😂
Haha when he said “horra” I definitely heard that LI accent. Suffolk county in the house!!
Here in Long island, it's all about classs!
Holbrook!!

Hello neighbour 🤣🤣🤣
P.T. scared the ever-loving shit out of me, man. I wish I'd never uninstalled it from my PS4.
Alien Isolation remains the only horror game I've ever been able to finish. The loop is just too good, and the ambient sounds so thrilling, that I just had to get through it.
I kept pt on my ps4 😎
Alien Isolation is my #1 favorite survival horror game. I loved how this game stayed true to the original right down to the retro technology. It's a classic and I would absolutely love another Alien game just like this one.
Condemned has amazing sound design. It really makes you feel like you're in an abandoned building with homeless crackheads lurking around. I think Alien is the only other game that comes close and it's not as scary because the setting and alien aren't realistic.
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines... Ocean House Hotel.
Nah.
Yeah that was defiantly a highlight of the game
@@kls701 I've played it a million times, and get chills every time.
I hoped PT would be on here so thanks for that, literally my favorite scary thing
Gameranx in previous videos: Resident evil 7 is diffrent form other resident evil games
Also gameranx: resident evil 7 brought back the scaryness of the series
By different he meant the first person perspective or the common civillian protagnist, not the Overall horror of the genre,You smartass.
The scary thing in alien isolation is seeing the xenomorph hissing then charging towards you
RayRay bro forreal. Its actually hard too lol
Yeah you cant do anything
I remember watching my friend play PT during a Halloween party in 2014. I truly hope someone taps Hideo Kojima and gives him the resources to create something like Silent Hills, but with a different title. Show Konami what they missed out on.
bruh da fact dat you brung up Charles entertainment cheese 😂🤣😭 I'm rollin
Little nightmares should have been an honorable mention. The entire game was creepy and the final boss was genuinely scary.
I’m not sure if this counts as a horror game but it took me literal YEARS to get through the suffering pt. 1 on ps2/xbox
Alien: Isolation is my number 1, incredible game.
has anyone noticed that a lot of old horror games are terrifying
I think the graphics and the restrictions they had because if the consoles present. And also the horror genre in gaming was pretty new at that time
thank you for the informative video without any jumpscares
Silent Hill 2 anyone? The hotel level was just terrifying.
The first Silent Hill game on PlayStation. Used to absolutely terrify me as a kid when I first played it 😂
Phasmophobia is genuinely scary as well but is really fun to play online with friends

Hey what about SCP Containment Breach?
I thought it would take a spot in the top 3 of your list!!
Yea that game.. idk if anyone could finish it
im playing SOMA and its pretty scary. Sometimes i cant even convince myself to play and finish it
YES! like i’ve played outlast and all that shit and it didn’t effect me the way SOMA does. i think the lack of intense boss fights and running builds suspense, along with being in a dark and enclosed area with minimal light. rather than having constant music too, the game utilizes the nasty sounds of the creatures and what not.....SOMA definitely makes me more uncomfortable than a lot of the other horror games i’ve played thus far. the creatures too, like the fact that you can’t always get a look of what they appear to be, makes me use my imagination as to what they would look like instead; something a lot of horror games don’t do
Fatal Frame! The heartbeat gyroscope mechanic was amazing. I wish more horror games implemented that.
Congratulations, you just motivated us to play these games lonely at 2am
Nope. Not me. I'm always home alone and I'm a wimp lol
Everyone: good horror games

@@javierdeleon8764 ps4 too, but you have to get it before it was canceled. If not, you can't play it. It has become a 'rare' thing that PS4s who have that teaser in the game list is sold expensive. Btw you can play it on PC. People converted that game from ps4.
