Very similar to Visage is Infliction: Extended Cut. Same deal with being defenseless and alone in a house with haunting memories and a haunting entity. True psychological horror. Even the "safe" points of the game had such an oppressive atmosphere that I felt legitimate dread in continuing. I've never had that before in a game. Same level of detail as well. You can take books and magazines off the shelves and read their contents not as words on the screen, but from the actual items. Food in the fridge has their nutritional labels fully written, and the VHS collection is fast with a lot of different movie titles that you can read the backs of the boxes of. HIGHLY recommend.
The suffering terrified me but I still beat it....the thing?...the thing was far beyond me at that time and I feel would be elevated with a remake more than the suffering
Yeah that game was really scary, especially because East-Asian horror gets me much more than Western horror. Like seriously, movies like The Conjuring 1 and 2, It, etc don't scare me at all. But The Grudge... let's just say that now that I mentioned it, I'm not gonna be able to sleep for the next week.
I started following that game during its Kickstarter.... seems like it was forever ago.... picked it up day one and it’s amazing as I thought it would be. Just wish they would make a VR update for it (they made that extended goal for VR).....
I know. There was so much hype surrounding it a few years back, but it took so long for the full game to be released, without any news at all for months and months on end. I think people just forgot about it. So sad because SadSquare Studio are an incredibly talented bunch of developers and would love for them to continue making games. **POSSIBLE SPOILERS** That section in Rakan’s chapter when he’s in the “deserted” hospital is a masterclass in horror. I constantly felt as though I was being watched....just like Rakan does in the house. It was incredibly unnerving walking through those tight, pea soup corridors at night time in absolute silence, except for the odd squeak echoing through them. Then those large windows leaving us exposed to the darkness outside, with a glaring light reflecting off of them, feeling like a hundred eyes looking in. There’s so many times I’ve had vivid nightmares and/or sleep paralysis where I’m trying desperately to switch lights on, but they don’t work and I’m not sure anymore if I’m awake or dreaming. I can’t believe how much the game emulates this.
I'm glad you mentioned "When Darkness Comes". It's in my steam library where it will remain. I tried to play it but with my depression and anxiety, it was too much. I have never played a game that was 'too much'. I encouraged my wife to play it as I wanted her to have a glimpse into some of the issues I face. It was too much for her also. Welcome to my world babe?
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly. The atmosphere, danger, lore, a constant sense of dread. It improved many aspects of the original game, making it a more enjoyable experience. I’ve played it over and over again and to find something new, even on the6th playthrough.
Great list here, definitely want to try some of these! Would have loved to see Darkwood on there too, that’s an amazingly tense and unique game that I never hear anyone talk about
Finally someone mentions The Suffering. One of the best horror games for the PS2. Both games are wonderful in the same way. Crazy horror ambience and scariest enemies.
The mannequins in the shopping mall level of Condemned still freak me out just thinking about them. Having them move around when you weren't looking made it even worse! Easily one of the creepiest gaming moments for me!
I didn't realize, but this has been done in Resident Evil 7 and Little Nightmares 2. It's funny how developers (despite making good games) copy cat each other.
Glad to see some love for The Thing, The Suffering and Condemned. Some others I think people forget are: Cryostasis, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, Kuon, Song of Horror,
I was hoping The Suffering would make this list! Had a great time with that game. Another under appreciated game is the Penumbra series. The fact it wasn’t mentioned when talking about who made SOMA is proof enough of that. Amnesia always takes the spotlight from it’s older brother.
The suffering terrified me as a kid. My brother got the xbox magazine and the demo for this was included with one of them. Me and my little sister played the intro twice and both times we got freaked out. Our older sister had to sleep with us that night cause we were terrified. Literally for weeks I was a afraid to turn off the lights
Visage is definitely one of my favorite new horror games. Phycological horror always gets me more. What pulled me in was what pulled a lot of people in everyone saying it's the closest thing to P.T.
OH MY GOD. THEY SHOULD CONSIDER THIS! This still manages to scare me on my PS2. We played this last december with my cousins and damnnn it really do! (With better mechanics or story or just a sequel!)
Goodness, I NEVER see people reference that game. One of the saddest, most depressing games, but also...comforting? I know a lot of people related to the MC. Myself included at times. That game is definitely horror in the real life sense. The kind that some, unfortunately, never are able to escape.
You forgot "Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi" from 2003. That game it's scary as hell. I almost shattered my crt monitor because I've thrown the keyboard and mouse into it out of fear.
Pretty much the same for me and my boyfriend, we basically force ourselves to play them when the other is around. (I'm the one who starts them on her own and doesn't always finish them, he's the one who starts and finishes them only when he's not alone, lol) So the solution is: invite someone at your place just so you can play without being too scared ✨ It's also hilarious to see the other person more anxious and terrified than you are, I should have played more often when I still lived with my younger sister.
Martian Gothic: Unification from 2001. It's one of those games that have a really interesting and unique story concept, with a focus on the standard trope of an ancient race on Mars except with a twist which I won't spoil here. Unfortunately, it's also one of those games that execute said story poorly, with the game being pretty-much summed up as an Alpha release than a finished, somewhat polished title you'd expect. But in some way I think that adds to it's charm.
OH MY GOD!!!! FINALLY!!! On so many list where people were talking horror games, whether it be creepy, forgotten, underappreciated... Someone finally brought up The Suffering!
Haunting Grounds terrified me when I was a kid, the sound the game makes when that big dude was hunting for you on the first level of the game still gives me the creeps.
Damn man what a great list you've done here, giving me a ton of nostalgia for games I've already played and switched me on to games i defo want to play. Cheers to you friends 🍺 👍
Another one that needs to be talked about/remastered is the O.G “F.E.A.R”. I absolutely loved that game!! Along with Condemned CI it was one of my favorites of all time. Fun Fact: F.E.A.R is the only game I’ve ever took a break from because I was too scared to go on. Alma terrified me lol.
I hadn't thought of that one time so far which is odd cuz I have them all and could not stop thinking about it for, well since, I always think about it. I stopped trying to finish it with the volume on. I just couldn't take jumping out of my seat screaming my lungs out one more time.. Good call.
I’ve noticed that anytime they include The Suffering, it’s always the first one. I liked The Ties That Bind just as much, and I have only heard the first one get mentioned.
J-horror is on a whole nother level back in the days...nowadays it's just sadako vs kayako or sadako 3d...fatal frame, now that's how you do j-horror, especially mask of the lunar eclipse
I love that you included some older gems like Thing Thing and The Suffering. Great list and a very cool idea for a video and I would love to even see a part 2.
Soma is not only easily one of my top 5 favorite games ever made, but it's story is one of my favorite stories in all fiction - the fact that a videogame was written to carry a story as deeply philosophically profound and existentially horrifying as Soma's is nothing short of incredible. Hell, you wouldn't even necessarily NEED the monsters and the main themes and subject matter of Soma are no less deeply troubling and unsettling... for real, you could tell me Soma's story is an adaptation of one of a Harlan Elison hallucination and I'd say "yeah, I could see that being the case..."
Man The Suffering was so creepy and good for when it came out. I remember being very frustrated, trying to do all the "good" decisions in game that still led to this grim ending
Gameplay was weak. It was actually a walking simulator with no chance of dying. I played 4-5 hours without dying once and stopped playing. Never finished it but all this ending thing made me to play it again.
Nice! I'm so glad someone else is talking about the haunting ground, that game terrified me as a kid watching my brother play it back in the day. The characters were so weird but I loved it! Another one I would add to this list is 'Siren Blood Curse' - it's a crazy Japanese spooky horror game that left me with more questions than answers in the end but some of the levels were very creepy/memorable to me, especially one level where you have to play as a little girl and escape a hospital filled with zombie-like monsters 😬
We need a condemned remaster ASAP, that game was spooky af

I didn't know it was on ps4 and i found out im getting it for sure
I mean, it’s a horror game, it’s scary, a lot of people don’t lie like the scary stuff monkaW
**POSSIBLE SPOILERS**
That section in Rakan’s chapter when he’s in the “deserted” hospital is a masterclass in horror.
I've heard people say it's too confusing to get through. that has kind of deterred me from trying it but I do want to add it to my backlog eventually
Yes I love that game! I had 1-3 and the 2nd one was definitely my favourite although I still liked the whole series 🥰
I knew the suffering would be on that list.
The thing was a really good game for the time. A lot of unique mechanics.
I'll never forget in "The Thing" how the one soldier pumps an MP5.
Great list here, definitely want to try some of these! Would have loved to see Darkwood on there too, that’s an amazingly tense and unique game that I never hear anyone talk about
I still remember haunting grounds ah man that shit was crazy!
YES!
YAS THE SUFFERING is one of my all time fave horror-esque games. Thank you SO MUCH for repping this one!!!!
I liked the first F.E.A.R. game alot and the deadspace series is always a classic.
F.E.A.R is still one of my favs. That is a game that needs a remaster if EA would not ruin it.
Haunting ground baby!!!!!! My favourite PS2 game!
So I guess haunting ground is counted in the clocktower series
Visage scared the piss out of me. And it had an amazing storyline. One of the best games I've ever played.
DAM bros, The suffering was "the" horror game of my childhood
Funny thing is, as a kid I always thought the main character was Ash Williams for some reason 😅🤣
@@supersaiyanbro Right?! XD
Visage is definitely one of my favorite new horror games. Phycological horror always gets me more. What pulled me in was what pulled a lot of people in everyone saying it's the closest thing to P.T.
Alone in the Dark has honestly been forgotten and it really is a great game
Imagine if they remade Forbidden Siren with today's technology? Playing it in the dark with a headset on would be scary as hell!
OH MY GOD. THEY SHOULD CONSIDER THIS! This still manages to scare me on my PS2. We played this last december with my cousins and damnnn it really do! (With better mechanics or story or just a sequel!)
I'd really hoped "The Cat Lady" would make an appearance here. That game stayed with me for a long time after I finished it.
Can you describe it?
@@MadWatcher Well, there goes all my interest in it.
Anime? Wtf are you smoking?
Goodness, I NEVER see people reference that game. One of the saddest, most depressing games, but also...comforting? I know a lot of people related to the MC. Myself included at times. That game is definitely horror in the real life sense. The kind that some, unfortunately, never are able to escape.
There's not enough love out there for Haunting Ground. The game mechanics were so innovative for it's time and really played the hide mechanic well.
One of the rarest horror games I never hear about Kuon
My buddy owns that and rule of rose and haunting ground
Among the Sleep is a very unique game. The atmosphere and the sense of defenselessness are what make it scary. Definitely recommended!!
You forgot "Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi" from 2003. That game it's scary as hell. I almost shattered my crt monitor because I've thrown the keyboard and mouse into it out of fear.
Visage is the one game I've played that I had to put down because I was so terrified...
Man. The suffering was awesome.
An absolute favorite of mine and I doesn’t get enough credit in my opinion is Shadowman. What a creepy game that was.
Me - "Cool! I love horror games!"
Also Me - too chicken shit to play any of them... play for 10 minutes, get scared, uninstall
Omg The Suffering games were so freaking good! I spent so much time trying to get the different endings and stuff. Really neat lore too
Alan Wake super underrated
Selling 4.5m copies is underrated?
Waiting for part 2
Alan Wake!!! Man that game was Gooood! Gave me goosebumps man!
@@AkaHoodie who the hell talk about that game
@@badbadthingss it's a 10 year old game...ppl still talk about it just not as much as others
Yesss! You guys make my day when you upload! Hello from across the sound, up here in CT!
OH MY GOD!!!! FINALLY!!! On so many list where people were talking horror games, whether it be creepy, forgotten, underappreciated... Someone finally brought up The Suffering!
I dunno if anyone remember this game called “obscure” it was released in 2004 but that was a pretty good horror gsme
Pretty good game, especially if ur playing co-op
And the sequel as well both good games
Sounds like a pretty "obscure" game if nobody's heard of it.
I'll see myself out.
@@aninditapaul9291 😂 😂
@@dezzy123rt Do I regain entry now?
Thanks for the quality video Jake. I’m picking up Visage tomorrow, have no idea how I missed that one.
I'm surprised "eternal darkness" wasn't on the list, a truly underrated yet forgot horror gem
“The Thing” was sooo good. I was blown away back then and recently picked it up again
Would yall consider F.E.A.R. series with this list? Loved 1, 2 and 3 back in the day.
Same
No, ir was quite famous, didn't fly under the radar.
The Obscure games on PS2 were creepy, fun, and unique. Sadly they aren't mentioned much, and have been as obscure as their name suggests.
Are there any official PC versions of them games. seems everything needs an emulator which sound long :D
Now that you mentioned Kayako, I'm not gonna be able to sleep for the next week.
I love the Fatal Frame series. Big faof the second game.
I love that you included some older gems like Thing Thing and The Suffering. Great list and a very cool idea for a video and I would love to even see a part 2.
Always had a crush on the Haunting Ground girl lol. Great game, love the mid 2000s vibe.
Haunting ground terrified me as a kid. I remember seeing it in the video store and even looking at the cover freaked me out
Hot girls scares you don't they?
Man The Suffering was so creepy and good for when it came out. I remember being very frustrated, trying to do all the "good" decisions in game that still led to this grim ending
SOMA was so deep, Adele could roll in it. Jokes aside SOMA is possibly one of the greatest horror games of all time. Easily.
Clock tower and fatal frame scared the shit out of me as a kid. Can especially remember running around a fountain from a butcher in Clock Tower 3
Fatal frame haven’t heard about that game in long time 😱 gave me nightmares cause of the true story behind it and all 🤦🏽♂️
@@ensignthatcher8354 right, have watched speed runs on GDQ in under a hour mean while i would spam all the film hopelessly.
Soma's Sound Quality is unmatched. This game got atmosphere right.
